I've never been an electric winch guy on off-road vehicles. Call me old-fashioned, but I've always gotten by with the old come-along, which these hoists are known as. Well, my dad borrowed my old one, and now it is gone. So, I needed a replacement. I thought to check Amazon to see what they had. I came across this product for a reasonable fee, and it seemed good so I ordered it. When I unboxed it, I was deeply impressed. It is very heavy duty, and well-built. Pretty amazing. But did it work? I put it to the test. Well, it pulled a deeply buried old 5ft steel scraper blade from a dark corner of my barn with very little effort. Yeah, it took a while. But it made a lousy job possible, and now it lives perched on my off-road vehicle. I do not doubt it will pull the vehicle from a muddy hole. A hefty piece of gear I thought would be useful while dismantling a car. As in fabricating an engine lift. Well, not so much a lift as a holder. In either case, it wasn’t needed for that. So I tried it strapped to my truck bumper as a come-along to persuade a couple volunteer box elder maples to jump out of the ground. Worked well enough for that. Now I’m thinking I might be able to use it as part of a bed crane to mount in the back of my old Jodge truck to use when I go firewood scavenging and don’t have any muscled help to get bigger logs and stumps stowed. Instructions included were somewhat helpful and made me think that the way I was using it wasn’t necessarily what it was exactly designed to do, but it did do what I wanted it to, namely provide a heckuva lot more leverage to get those little stumps out ... show more

Got this for my husband for general purposes in the shop. Hoist is as described and works is it should in regards to racheting/releasing. At the moment its mounted on the front of the trailer and being used as a come along (because of course we couldnt find the one that we normally just throw in the truck as needed). This worked great to help pull a dead (small) tractor up on to the trailer to get it back home. ... show more

I got this to keep around because they come in handy for so many different jobs or projects! I have heavy equipment and semis that I have to occasionally work on and this thing has made my work easier! It’s great quality and heavy duty. It’s easy to use. Doesn’t stick when you’re tightening and it ratchets smoothly. The lever is comfortable to grab and move. I like that the hook swivels and I can turn it whatever way I need to when hooking it up! I drive a 1988 Dodge W350 among other things, and one day, I got confident, too confident. I figured with mud tires and 4x4, getting stuck in mud would be a fairly difficult task. It's kind of surprising how quickly off road tiers can get filled with mud and become totally useless. In the end, the emergency I had prepared myself for came to fruition. There I was with a truck stuck in the mud in my girlfriend's son's backyard and we tried for about an hour to get it out. Then suddenly, as I wishing I had a winch, I remembered, I kind of do, I used this to gap between two ropes and just kept tighting it like a wrench. Long story short, it did the job and I got the truck out. It took time, because it's not designed for speed, it's designed for power, but let's just say I'll be keeping it in the truck from now on. Never overestimate the power of mud tiers, or underestimate the power of patience. I'm always doing everything myself, lifting things using hoists and leverage. So having this hoist will come in handy when I get myself into one of those projects where I need some help but can't find any. This works like a come along cable winch and just takes patience instead of muscle, so I can handle that. This is heavy duty and well made, think it should last if used properly. ... show more

It worked good a dozen times then the gears stripped and will not lock on the pull in. You get what you pay for. Lesson learned.
