I looked at hundreds of magnets and magnet kits on Amazon before I finally settled on this one. So many had bad reviews even when they showed as 4-5 stars. I don't know why this one was buried so far away in the search pages. As a retired teacher, I trust the Learning Resources brand. Seems to be very well made and my grandchildren and some other children I gifted it to really like it. The larger wand in particular is a nice strong magnet without being strong enough to cause injury. They are available as stand alone items by several vendors, with or without the round bingo or game discs. As an add-on, I put about a tablespoon of iron filings into a clear plastic jar (an empty spice jar), and sealed it. the kids really enjoy how the filings stand up like trees near the magnet.     • Magnetic chips are just okay everything else is fine
The magnetic chips are small plastic disks with a thin magnetic wire around them. My curious children easily pried off the wire of a couple of the chips with fingernails. Some of the wires were pokey when we first got the set. The magnets work fine with the items included in the set. Please note the magnets were not easily compatible with EXTRA items NOT INCLUDED in the set. The magnets didn't always pick up metal items like big paperclips, nuts, and bolts that were heavier than the included magnetic disks. Small paperclips worked better. The magnets stick to the small diecast metal toy car, but couldn't pick it up. Also, worth noting, our kids were slightly confused because the plastic chips were magnetic but the plastic water bottle cap was not. We sang the Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood song "You gotta look a little closer to find out what you want to know" and then they noticed that the plastic chips had something extra similar to the small paperclips. I bought these for classroom use in science for 2nd grade. The activities and instructions were great help in setting up specific scientific explorations for students. Style of the magnets is perfect for 7-8 years olds.
