Sometimes you buy and item and you have certain expectations and most of the time they don’t even come close to meeting them. This is yarn winder met all my expectations and more. I have been wanting one for a while but all the reviews I read about them say they break or don’t do the job well. This one has been used a lot, like over 200 skeins of yarn and is still going strong. It takes a little to get used to by that I mean like all things the more you use it the more tricks you learn about it. You can wind the yarns as is with the tension arms that come with the winder, that will make the yarn cake spongy and soft and not hold its shape as well as store bought cakes. I have learned if I let the yarn go through my hand before it goes through the tension arms on the winder I have more control of the tension making the yarn cakes firmer and allowing more yarn to be wound on the spool. The yarn cake is then more firm like what you find in the store. I do wish it has an exchangeable spool for smaller thread/yarn like used for lace. The spool is way to big and leaves a huge whole in the center and once you take the yarn/thread of it looses its shape an collapses but this only happens on yarn/thread. I also have learned if you press on the cake once it is off the winder it compresses it into a little shorter and firmer cake vs not pressing it with my hands on a table. I’m very happy over all with the winder enjoy using it. Not only is my yarn stash well organized now and takes up less space I also get a good arm workout lol. I do find the speed also matters, the slower you go the better shape it is and the faster you go it becomes kinda messy and spongy. This winder is very solid and well made out of metal and the only plastic is the spool and handle grip. It has been used over 200 times so far and looks and works like it is brand new. It is a pleasure to use especially if the yarn is still in the skein, yarn rolled in balls is a little more unsteady today wind but that is not the winders fault. I normally do not write reviews but when you find a product that does what it says, is a pleasure to use and meets and surpasses your expectations, you have to write a review. All moving parts are metal and the winder is super solid. Cakes a cannon one pound skein no problem as long as you keep the tension tight as you wind. My only criticism is that the winder is quite loud so I don't wind late at night as to not disturb my upstairs neighbors. Edit: the bolt at the top of the base chews into the table. That would have been good to know before I ruined my new desk ... show more

    • Not bad, but needed some work when I first got it.

So I bought this, noticing that is was significantly less than the brand name one, plus the gearing was made out of metal rather than plastic, so more durable, right? When I get it and get it out of the box I go to try it out and it keeps getting stuck every second or third turn, which is annoying because it’s not supposed to do that. So i have to take it apart and file down the little burrs that are on all the gears to make this thing run smoothly. Plus the rods that serve as the flying arm and the tensioning arm have some pretty rough edges themselves that needed some filing to smooth over otherwise they would occasionally catch the yarn. Once all of these things were solved it worked pretty well, as long as you kept tension on the yarn before it entered into the stationary arm, which I think is common for any of these devices. I do not write reviews. But I found this to be so amazing, that I had to let my fellow yarn addicts know about this product. I bought this about a year ago and finally decided to use it this afternoon. Because, well, covid forces us all to find projects to do at home. I've spent the last few hours winding yarn and OMG, this is the best thing since sliced bread. I've wound worsted to super bulky and this thing handles them all like a champ! The hardest part is untangling the yarn and that has nothing to do with this winder. I bought this for its large capacity and metal parts and it was worth every penny. It feels secure and hardy and I was able to really crank that thing fast with untangled yarn. The only glitch I've had is the yarn guide was a bit hard to put on and it can slip off if not done correctly, which is not explained. My husband had to help, but it works great now. Overall, best money I've spent on my yarn hobby (besides the yarn) thus far. Pro tips: 1) be sure the yarn guide is positioned under the washer and wingnut and that you get it really tight; 2) install it on a sturdy table because when you get going, there's a lot of movement; 3) don't pull from the middle of a skein if you don't have to because that's where the yarn gets all tangled (but I had half used skeins that were loose and already started that way); 4) crank the handle clockwise because it keeps the yarn taut if you do have to stop and do some untangling; and 5) have untangled yarn or at least someone to help it move it along even faster. Has a learning curve. Large balls of yarn can become unwieldy and not hold their shape well. Small and medium skeins hold their shape beautifully and are easy to store when the balls are produced.
