  • Desert Island YES
If I were to be exiled to a desert island and had my choice of a single Yes album, "The Ladder" might well be my choice. Several critics here have alluded negatively to the pop flavor of this work, but I find it to be the perfect mix of the complex, progressive Yes of the 70s and the epitome of their more melodically "catchy" sensibilities (and the production is simply stellar). I'm a sucker for a good pop song if it's inventive and well constructed, and after the cocky pomp of "90125" and "Big Generator", I feel that "The Ladder" has brought Yes to their full potential. The opening two tracks are my favorites: "Homeworld (The Ladder)" just gets way up under my skin - I can drive down any highway, 20 or 30 miles over the speed limit, with this tune pounding the subs and, well, get high without any chemical augmentation. "It Will Be A Good Day" (which Jon dedicates to his wife Jane on the "House Of Yes" live version) is simply the most disarmingly beautiful ballad any progressive rock band has ever recorded IMHO. As of this writing, the typical band bickering is in full swing and Jon Anderson has been replaced by a vocalist the guys discovered on YouTube (WTF?). Like several of the band's past rifts, I hope this one gets resolved. Yes without Jon Anderson is... No. If Jon doesn't return to the band, then I would have to declare "The Ladder" a very fitting swan song. ... show more

  • They are a band again!
They are a band again!, Originally written: November 2, 1999,updated Aug 24, 2005 They are a band again - If nothing else I can say that. I think it is pointless to compare The Ladder to their classics from the 70s (still some of my favorites, but OK already we are talking almost 30 years ago!). I don't know what to make of "Open Your Eyes"; sounds like the Sherwood/Squire project. Keys 2 had some good progressive pieces, even the shorter ones, but it sounded like it was assembled in the studio rather than recorded; Wakeman's parts sounded "phoned in." The Ladder sounds like they were all working together and recording it together. Favorites are Homeworld and New Language. I could do w/o Finally and Face to Face. If Only You Knew is well-played, but sounds like it might be more at home on a Celine Dion CD. Still, this is the best, most consistant Yes in a while. They are still playing great music. ... show more

  • A Cohesive Work of Progressive Rock Art
After recently re-experiencing virtually the entire Yes library, I have concluded that The Ladder may very well be the best album Yes has ever released. The writing, performances, and sound quality are all excellent throughout. Some songs, such as the straight-ahead Face to Face will grab your attention immediately. (Listen to the blending of Chris Squire's descending bass lines with Steve Howe's ascending guitar lines.) Others, such as The River, may require closer listening, but will ultimately haunt you with their beauty. (Only Yes could successfully weave so many disparate and complex themes into a unified tapestry of sound). Some tracks, such as Finally and The Message, required many listenings before I could really appreciate them, but in time I have come to like every track on the album. What makes this album really special is that it is a cohesive work. The tracks tie together and segue logically from each to the next. In short, The Ladder is well conceived and executed from beginning to end. If you are a fan of Yes but have tired of their solo efforts, changes of personnel, and re-hashing of old material on live albums, I strongly encourage you to buy The Ladder. It will renew your love for this very talented group of musicians who make the quality of their music their top priority. ... show more

  • Excellent Album
One of the finest later albums from Yes. To me, probably the last great album they had. Standouts include Homeworld (The Ladder), It Will Be a Good Day, and To Be Alive (Hep Yadda), but I enjoy the entire album. The vinyl says it is 100% virgin vinyl, and it sounds great, very quiet. All in all a great album and presentation on vinyl. ... show more

  • The Ladder is awesosme!
I was skeptical about this album before I heard it. Some critics gave Igor Khoroshev less credit than he is due. Also the creative input from Billy Sherwood gives the album fresh ideas while maintaining all the Yes-like character you would expect from Anderson/Howe/Squire/White. Khoroshev demonstrates classical training through melodic lines and harmonic voicings. He combines this with occasional licks reminiscent of the glory days of the '70s with Rick Wakeman. (Though not so much as to seem like he is ripping Wakeman off) Sherwood's contribution is not as apparent, being essentially the rhythm guitar player. However, the guitars, Howe and Sherwood, come across as having a broad spectrum of new ideas and sounds, not unlike when 90125 came out. Yes has continued to be be my favorite band since the 70's. The Ladder quickly became one of my favorite Yes albums! Check it out :) ... show more

  • Not Yes's best work
I bought this record because I'd read somewhere that the guys in Yes thought very highly of it. There are some good parts but to me it is not the classic Yes. The band had a spirit in the past that they seem to have lost. I had hopes that this record would have some of that spirit but there is very little of it here. ... show more
