  • Great first experience, but...
First of all, I read a large majority of the negative reviews and after dismissing a lot of them as "failure to use common sense", I decided to buy a set. Cleaned them according to instructions, and put them side by side on my grates. First meal, sausages, pierogies and peppers. I heated my Weber up to about 400 degrees. The grill heated MUCH, MUCH slower than normal with the mats covering the majority of the surface area, so be prepared for that and adjust cooking times accordingly. After it registered 450 closed, I opened it up, threw everything on the two mats. A little bit of buttered oil for the pierogies, and left to cook. Everything moved on the mats beautifully, no sticking, no issues. The peppers were difficult to get seared, but the sausages were developing beautiful sear marks. The sear marks weren't nearly as deep or flavorful as on the grates themselves, in order to get the sausages the way everyone likes them, I had to finish them on the bare grates to get that heavy char. The pierogies were fantastic, normally pasta sticks to everything, but not these mats, and the effect was like a deep fried pierogie without deep frying. Now, the reason for the 4 and not 5 stars. Cleanup. The mats do NOT clean with a splash of running water, or even a heavy stream of scalding hot water. I had to wet them down, lay them on the counter and lightly buff the gunk off with a scotch brite pad, then wipe them down with paper towel, and no matter what I couldn't get the greasy feel off them. And oddly enough, both sides of each mat felt greasy. The grill was completely clean before using the mats. Some people may opt to not clean them for "built up flavor" but I don't use my grill enough to feel that won't cause some kind of food poisoning. Finally, the mats were inspected and the edges are a little tiny bit curled, you can see the grille imprint on the mats, don't know if this is permanent or not or how it will effect it's longevity. I'll probably update this review in a little while once I get more use on them, or if there is any catastrophic failure. ... show more

These BBQ mats are nice for the smalls that normally fall through the grill grate. They stay flat on the grill and don't curl up. Wipe clean or put in the dishwasher. Can use over and over again. Can be cut to size if you want.

  • Barbecue Salmon Breakthrough
I bought this grill mat specifically for barbecuing salmon. I have tried all sorts of methods for cooking salmon but invariably the results were poor because the salmon stuck to the grill no matter what. I had difficulty controlling the charring on the underside of the fish, even when I put the salmon on a separate grill on top of the regular grill. Then I bought the Kona Grill Mat. What a breakthrough! I heated the grill (Weber Genesis) on medium heat. When the temperature gauge showed 450 I put the Kona grill mat on the barbecue and let it heat up for a couple of minutes. Then I added the salmon (individual portions) that had been given a thin coating of olive oil, sprinkled Chef Paul Prudhomme's Magic Salmon Seasoning - 7 oz over it. Just before bringing to the barbecue I sprinkled a little bit of brown sugar on the top. I closed the top of the barbecue and let it cook for 12 minutes. The results were perfect. The salmon was tender, moist, and had some light grill lines on the underside. The salmon came off the mat without any sticking at all. Note: If you are going to cook the salmon steaks without cutting beforehand, increase the cooking time to about 14 minutes at 450 or so. I purchased other brands of grill mats with the same order as the Kona, just to compare. The Kona is much thicker and easier to deal with. It washes up very easily and you can even put it in the dishwasher. It works nicely on barbecued vegetables - I cooked whole asparagus, bell peppers and portobello mushrooms.   • Great for Veggies
I'd seen these, or products like them, advertised for some time but resisted the urge to buy one. Finally decided to "splurge" and bought these mats from Kona. They come two in a box and are glossy jet black. The picture shows ribs or grooves in the surface. Mine are smooth as a babies behind. But they do the job. They keep soft or delicate foods from either sticking to the grill or falling through as advertised. I took some fresh zucchini, onions, peppers, and snow peas from the garden and grilled thew up on one side of the grill while cooking chicken on the other. Worked great. One problem.... they don't have any kind of lip or raised edge so stirring and turning small pieces was a challenge cause they kept wanting to slide off. ... show more
