Description

Factory Reconditioned Model KitchenAid's Artisan stand mixer is a substantial piece of equipment: 325 watts of mixing power make child's play of creaming butter, kneading dough, and whipping cream. The kid in you will appreciate how quick and easy it is to mix up a batch of cookie dough. This model comes with three attachments: a flat beater for making batter, meat loaf, and all textures in-between; a wire whip for egg whites, mayonnaise, and more air-infused creations; and a hook for mixing and kneading yeast doughs. All three are solidly constructed and easily secured to the beater shaft with a simple twist. The bowl itself locks tight to the base. Standing about 15 inches high, jutting out a foot, and weighing more than a grown woman's bowling ball, this stand mixer isn't the sort of appliance you'll wipe down and put away. Better to find a square foot of free counter space for easy access; besides, this machine is as pretty as it is rugged-- you'll want to show it off. --Betsy Danheim Editor's note: This is a reconditioned small appliance. Reconditioned generally means that the appliance has been returned to the manufacturer, who brings the appliance back to like-new condition. Some appliances may contain cosmetic blemishes.

  • Exactly what I'd expect- Quality, Performance, and Value
I write this enjoying an oatmeal cherry cookie, fresh from the double batch just whipped up in the new Kitchenaid. It arrived today- 4 days after I ordered it- Talk about SUPER saver shipping! You all know what a Kitchenaid is- so I'm not gonna sing the praises of the mixer in general- but I'll tell ya about mine: It arrived double boxed- and tightly packed. The inner box, the Kitchenaid box, was plain white with green "Factory Reconditioned" letters on the side. I was nervous about how close to new this really would be... I opened it up and set it on the counter- Yes, there are two small blemishes on it- on the side of the unit- they look just like two #2 pencil points. Not bad- I expected far worse to be honest. And I plan on making this a workhorse anyway- the Kitchenaid, to me, isn't a showpiece (if it were, I'd buy NEW.) Two small dots aren't enough to make me want to pay twice what I did on this one. I inspected the paddle (what I use most) blade- perfect- The dough hook was also perfect. Both came nested tightly in the inner styrofoam. The whisk attachment, which arrived attached to the unit, was, indeed, a little bent out of shape. A little pressure on two sides put it right back to normal. I remember the first Kitchenaid I bought (a base-power plain white one) had the same issue. Really, not a big deal at all. The bowl was perfect as well- no scrapes- solid handle. It took me a little while to unknot the plug- was wound up in the bowl. I prepped everything and set to work- a double recipe of oatmeal cookies. This is the recipe that would bring the lesser Kitchaid to its knees- it would do it, but it would complain the whole time. The mixer did just fine with it. I'm happy to report- all operation is perfectly normal. Fron the for-what-it's-worth department- I've owned 3 Kitchenaids now- they have ALL definitely made a different sound running at lower speeds than at the higher speeds. I would purchase again without reservation. Again, I make my appliances work for me, rather than just look pretty. Expect a blemish here or there- Expect the performance and quality of a KitchenAid- and expect it to arrive a lot sooner than you'd think. ... show more

  • An excellent product
Color: Metallic Chrome Size: 5 Qt
The mixer I had before was ok. It did the job, until the electronic controls broke and the speed was kind of random. This mixer on the other hand is vastly superior than my previous Oster stand mixer, or my moms old Sunbeam (but she can't complain, she used it for 50 years). The biggest pros are the sturdiness and power of this mixer. It is also quiet and can do any job without lamentations. The standard stailess bowl is a plus too. I no longer have to worry about breaking it like I had with the old glass bowls. The 5.5 qt. bowl is a good size for me. I don't think I have any recipe that would exceed its capacity. Its smaller cousing may be too limited for weekend baker. The attachments are also easy to clean, and will probably never rust. My old attachments rusted a bit near the rivets because, I often will just let the dishes to dry in the dish rack. This is no longer a worry. If you think that you need the special chute to avoid messes, think again. This accessory is not at all needed. The refurb. model that I purchased did not have it. I had reservations about this when I placed my order, but after using the mixer, I soon realized that not only did I not need it, but it is probably a nuisance. This device greatest quality, sturdiness, is also the cause of its greatest defect; it is heavy. A frail person would not be able to handle it. This is not the kind of device that you can easily store in the cubboards. It is much better if you can devote counter space for it. I still have an unresolved question? Basically kitchen aid has two basic designs: one where the top part of the mixer pivots (my mixer) and one where the bowl goes up and down. I still wonder if one design is superior? I think that should be your only question when buying a kitchen aid mixer. I hope you enjoy this product as much as I did. ... show more

  • What's on the inside!
Color: Boysenberry Size: 5 Quart
I got this to make dough for different biscuits and such and I had to wonder if buying a renewed version was the right move but in hindsight I can say it was. I saved a ton of money and it works as good as my 50 year old one that finally is giving up the ghost and will need a motor soon. Being an engineer, of course I took it apart after the warranty period was up and sure enough, it's not made quite as well as the really old ones (the metal wasn't quite as heavy duty) but I was surprised how none of the parts were plastic (not even the housing) and were all made of metal. The drive gears and anything that takes serious weight/torque was made of metal (not full steel I don't think, but some sort of alloy that I didn't bother to test) and there were no blemishes or shavings of any kind in the gear box or around the race bearing/bushings. I did go ahead and re-grease it all while I had it open, but overall I was impressed with the quality. Yes there were a few plastic parts as expected to keep the cost down, but nothing that would go out easily and none were gears. The plastics were confined to the electronics and connectors which is to be expected and the lid was made of a thinner gauge than the old one, but I am concerned with function, and this functions just as well. The rest of the parts (The paddle, the bowl etc) were all in perfect shape and I honestly couldn't tell if they had ever been used at all or not. Overall, saving around $150 was absolutely worth it IMHO. I hope you found this helpful! ... show more

  • What a deal!!!!
Color: White Size: 5 quarts
I have looked at and drooled over KitchenAid Artisan mixers for years. But at prices north of $300 this KitchenAid didn't seem like a reasonable investment for me. When I saw the reconditioned machine on Amazon for an astonishingly low price I thought, "why not?" I love to bake and make bread and, particularly for bread making, most stand mixers don't hold up well. I've had my mixer for about a month. I have made bread and tons of Christmas cookies. I've whipped egg whites and whipping cream. I've whipped up garlic mashed potatoes and pumpkin bread. I cannot say enough about this wonderful machine. It is truly heavy duty and you never have to worry that an extra thick dough or batter is going to burn the motor up. The description of "factory-reconditioned" was a machine that had been returned to the factory and brought back to "like new" condition," but may have a small blemish. Mine has a small ding in the white finish but it is so small you wouldn't notice it if you weren't expressly looking for it. I love this mixer! It is substantial--a serious cooking and baking tool. Yes, it takes up precious room on my tiny kitchen counter, but I'm happy to have it there. If you crave one of these mechanical monsters, but are on a limited budget, I highly recommend a reconditioned KitchenAid. This machine on Amazon was less expensive than the small, four quart classic on sale at Kohl's or WalMart--and it is a bigger, more powerful machine. You just can't go wrong. At Amazon's price, it is truly a deal. ... show more

  • The Gold Standard in Mixers Made Affordable
I've always had a Tim Taylor attraction to quality kitchen appliances, and have always dreamed of owning a good Kitchenaid stand mixer. About 10 years ago while in grad school, I needed a stand mixer for some of my baking and kitchen experiments. The Kitchenaids were priced well out of my reach, but I was able to get a Sunbeam Mixmaster, which still had a good reputation as long as it was operated within its limits. That Mixmaster has served me well until I started experimenting with pizza making lately. The poor Mixmaster got pretty hot while kneading dough. Finally, the other week, a puff of smoke came out, and it was no more. I had already bookmarked this factory-refurbished Artisan on my Amazon wish list. I gave my wife a chance to veto the purchase, but she realized that losing my stand mixer was like losing a few arms and legs to me, and told me to get blue. (And she accused me of purposefully killing the Mixmaster so I had an excuse to the get the Kitchenaid!). I placed my order. The Kitchenaid mixer has always had a good reputation, and is mentioned in several cooking books and web sites. In GEAR FOR THE KITCHEN by Alton Brown, host of the Food Network's GOOD EATS, Alton highly recommends the Kitchenaid, as well as Dominick DeAngelis in THE ART OF PIZZA MAKING. Alton highly recommends a tilt-head design, as this allows easier bowl scraping, and specifically mentions the Artisan by name. The Artisan is Kitchenaid's most powerful tilt-stand mixer. (The more powerful models are bowl-lift.) With the Kitchenaid mixers, I really like the one big beater. It's infinitely easier to clean (and lick off) that trying to clean inside the tines of the two smaller Mixmaster beaters. The Kitchenaids have an accessory drive, which may be of dubious use for me, and of course, have the power to do the job (the Artisan features 325W) and the reputation for holding up. The bowl locks to the base, and the head locks down. The machine is heavy and doesn't walk across the counter while kneading dough like my old mixer did. On the downside, if you are like me and believe, in the manner of the priests of Old Testament Israel whom were allowed to stab a fork into the boiling sacrifice and keep for themselves whatever meat came up, that whatever is left on the beater is yours, you may be disappointed at how it just sheds dough. I am also used to the fact the bowl of my old Mixmaster rotates, which made it easier to scrape. As for the Kitchenaid accessories, they are expensive. It may save a little counter space to add a can opening attachment, but a good, easier-to-use stand-alone model costs a third as much. In GEAR FOR YOUR KITCHEN, Alton Brown recommends the Krups ice cream machine which costs less than just the attachment for the Kitchenaid. This is a factory-reconditioned model. Often, factory-refurbished products prove more reliable than new because someone has carefully examined and tested the unit. There were minor cosmetic flaws. There were scuffs in the bowl as though it had been used before, and a barely-noticeable dent as though the beater and head were dropped into the mispositioned bowl. Also, there are minor scuffs on the base of the mixer as though a monkey struggled with getting the base of the bowl into the base of the stand. I would have scuffed the bowl by now myself. You are warned in the description that there may be minor cosmetic flaws. The mixer comes with the manual and all the packing material as though it were new, but with a specially-printed box clearly indicating that this is a reconditioned unit. A sticker in the manual points out that the warranty is only six months. In the years since I bought my Mixmaster, Sunbeam has REALLY upped the ante. For two-thirds the price of the Artisan, the new Mixmaster features 350 Watts, a head that locks down, and a bowl that locks on. What did the Kitchenaid give me for a 50% more? A drive for overpriced accessories that I may never use, 25 fewer Watts of power, the nice, single beater, and one bowl. (Mixmasters have always been supplied with two bowls.) I went with the Kitchenaid anyway. Probably has to do some with its excellent reputation, (just because the Mixmaster can put out 350W doesn't mean it can do it for a long time.) the image it projects of its owner, and the fact that I always wanted one. I went with the Artisan, but as an alternative, you may want to consider the new Mixmaster. I AM very pleased with my Artisan, and, in fact, my mother is ordering one for my sister, and we will probably get one for my mother. Buying factory-refurbished just can't be beat. ... show more

Can’t say enough about mine, My husband ordered me the clear mixing bowl from Kitchen Aid for Mother’s Day, I love it. I love how you can see thru it and see how well your bread is kneeled! • Excellent machine - UPDATE: now 22 yrs old and still going strong
UPDATE: i purchased this renewed mixer in June 2004. its now May 2026. 22 years and my kitchenaid mixer is still going strong. its currently sitting on the floor of my dining room as we partially remodel the kitchen, but will go back to its rightful place on new countertops soon. easily one of the best purchases ive ever made. i did end up buying a new blade in 2012, the "New Metro KA-THR Original Beater Blade," which has no problem with the dishwasher, and it also is still in great shape. cant recommend both products enough. ******* i bought this mixer when they had an incredible sale going on, $99.99 for a refurb tangerine model. that was nearly 7 years ago, and it still works great. kitchenaid reliability is why i chose this mixer, and it hasnt let me down. the only negative i have seen is a nasty problem with oxidation of the original flat beater blade that came with it, because it is not dishwasher safe. i dont use it as much as i would like to because it has to be handwashed and cant just be tossed in the dishwasher. today i am ordering a new dishwasher safe beater blade so that i can throw out the old one and i dont have to worry about putting the blade through the dishwasher. ... show more
