  • Surprisingly Decent
I am a gamer in my 50s. As a gamer, I started with an Atari 2600, then a ZX Spectrum, then had an Amiga, 3D0 and PS1. These days I'm exclusively PC (I build my own rigs). As the former employee of a games store, I played pretty much every 8 and 16 bit console going, as well as dabbling with the 464, 664, C64 and Atari ST. That's the background that informs this review. First, the negative. Controllers are weak and not that responsive, though they (obviously) perform better on games designed for controllers. Imagine a cheap, knock-off gamepad and you're there - Not the worst, far from the best. Console randomly changes controllers for some games or when waking from sleep. Feels like the console has locked up when it's just a matter of trying the controller you weren't using when it went to sleep. A lot of early, keyboard based games (Spectrum, C64, 464 etc) will require a lot of fiddling and redefining to a controller. There is a pop-up keyboard, but this doesn't improve things as it covers the screen. There are a good few duplicates in the games, some of which are just different versions, most seem to just be multiple copies of the exact same game. Games are unchanged recreations, so remember that 8 & 16 bit games will run like a bag of spanners because they're 8 and 16 bit games. Yes, there's a bit of slowdown in some games, but mostly it's just very old software. Now, the positives. Aside from a crash here and there, every game runs, and the sound works fine. Yes, controller set-up is an issue, but if nothing else the console works as advertised and the games run. Set-up is a piece of cake. Wireless controllers come with the dongle in the batter department and they pair in a couple of seconds. Not had any issue with connectivity, either. Navigating 65000 games is surprisingly easy. Collections are grouped by original system and then the titles are listed alphabetically once you go into the list itself. Lists of 1000s can take a little time to navigate, but that's about it. Adding favourites is also very easy. There is a collection just for the games you want to get to easily and, with 65000 to sort through, that's a very welcome convenience. Initial start aside (and that's not excessive), games are pretty quick to load up and exit from. There's no excessive waiting in my opinion, and I do not consider myself an overly patient soul. The X2 Pro is stupidly small. The dimensions on the description are for the outer box, with cables and controllers. The actual unit is 4.5x4.5x1 inches. Wherever you take it, all you needs is power and a HDMi socket and you're good. To Sum Up Is it worth the money? In my opinions, absolutely. I got it because I wanted to play games from my childhood and teenage years. Most of the ridiculous amount of games available I won't touch. Some of the ones I do, will disappoint. But I will find and fall in love all over again with some of them and as entertainment for friends and family, it also more than justifies the cost. Yes, I could set-up emulators on my pc, get the ROMS and go from there, but for a bit over $100, it's all done for me and it's good to go out of the box. Caveats I have not tried to add additional games to the SD card, so cannot comment on that function, but the option is apparently there and I don't have any reason to doubt it can be done, and probably done pretty easily. Cheers! ... show more
