  • Amazing sound, hard to install
This subwoofer sounds amazing but it was a b**** to install. It comes with the necessary wiring but depending on where you're putting it, the wires are not nearly long enough. Here's a rough summary of what I went through to install it on my factory stereo for a 2015 Honda Accord: The kicker fit perfectly beneath the passenger seat. It came with a whole mounting kit involving screws and straps, but I didn't want to do any permanent fixtures if I could avoid it. The seat had a retaining bar underneath that worked perfect for me to strap the sub in place and still allow full range of the seat adjustments. I then had to pull a lot of the trim and detach the rear seats in order to run the speaker wires to the trunk. The wires were about three feet too short to reach the driver side speaker so I tried with it attached to just one speaker. I ran the power wire through the front side trim, beneath the center dash column, and through column and dash above the pedals and behind the interior fuse box. There was a small plug to run a wire through the firewall of the cabin which then ran through a large space above the driver side wheel and into the engine bay. Here I crimped together the provided battery fuse and connector and attached it to the positive lead on the battery. I then searched high and low for a nearby grounding point for the ground wire which is only about two feet long, but couldn't find one, so I stripped down an old extension chord I had lying around and used that as a negative lead to a grounding point I already knew of in the trunk. Upon powering on the car I saw the sub was turning on through the high input mode but was not audible and was giving me a red light indicating either overloaded signal or not enough power. At this point I tried some various configuration of connections, before deciding to order some 16 gauge wire, line output converter, and some rca to wire adapters for the line output converter. I then tapped both rear speakers and connected them to the converter which then connected to the wires to the sub. Now the sub wouldn't power on in both high and low modes, which meant I now had to connect the only wire left that I previously was trying to avoid connecting, which is the remote turn on wire. This wire was also only two feet, so I went out and bought some 12 gauge wire along with a fuse tap and crimped together the wires and ran it the same as the power wire through the dash to the fuse box. I tapped the fuse for the windshield wiper slot as this is a low amp circuit and would prevent the sub from turning on unless the car was also powered on. Note that fuse configurations may be completely different depending on your model of vehicle. At this point the sub was now working and sounded great, but I started to get weird feedback. I already knew that this was likely caused by the active noise cancellation that comes with all modern Honda vehicles. I had to pull out the storage compartment in the dash in order to reach the ANC controller and disconnect it. After doing this, the sub works flawlessly. But if my music is turned down I definitely notice the engine a little more than before. At some point in the future I plan to figure out a way to easily switch the ANC on and off depending on if I want the extra bass or not. The conclusion to my story is that installing this speaker is not for the feint of heart, and I suggest you do a research on the speaker and electrical configurations of your vehicle before doing any modifications to your stereo system. If you're willing to put in the work, this sub is amazing for the price and delivers amazingly deep and clear sound for how small it is. ... show more

  • Can't recommend it enough! Completed my system perfectly!
Ok, first off about me so you have a frame of reference when I talk about sound quality and music. 47yrs old. I grew up listening to 70's rock, 80's rock & new wave, 90's alternative, country, club music, & pop. By the 2000's I was grown and tended to go back and listen to the stuff I grew up on. Now I'm not one for low, low, rumbling bass and trails on and makes trunks rattle and loosens bolts on your vehicle. Nothing wrong with that at all, just not my taste. I like bass that compliments the mids but bass that you can feel in the form of a punch. Take Van Halen for example. You listen to it for the riffs, for the guitar, for the lyrics, but I also like to feel when Alex Van Halen kicks the bass drum, and tom-toms. Same with the Foo Fighters. David Grohl is about the best drummer right now and he displays it in his music. I want to hear it, feel it in a song like Everlong, but without the bass guitar overpowering all the other instruments because I have 1 or 2 subwoofers that can't help it. I used to listen to these songs as loud as I could, going to Galveston beach (don't get in the water) when I was 16 to 22 riding with my buds. Now, as I go from construction site to construction site, in my 2011 Ram 1500 quad cab, for my job I hardly ever go over 50% on my volume knob in my car. Still loud, just enough for my neighbors to hear in the background when I pull up in my drive, but never enough for it to annoy them. That's where this beauty comes in! I get clean, punchy (but crisp), bass for just about everything I listen too. I can feel it too, without giving me a headache. This is great for rock, pop, blues, and even classical. Granted, the rest of your system has A LOT to do with the final sound with these genres, and you might be happy without a subwoofer if you get the right speaker/head-unit combo, cause I was, but when I added this baby....WOAH! It made such a nice difference at all volumes, but especially at the higher volumes where the rest of my speakers began to struggle on some songs. I will say this, get a head unit with at least a 5 band EQ. It'll be really nice if also has a High Pass filter to allow the sub to handle the lows and the rest of your system only have to deal with the higher mids and all the highs. It should allow you to be able to set the frequency you want the sub to handle, but if not don't worry, this sub has a knob for that. I place the sub under the rear passenger side seat in my Ram. I had to place it at an angle in order for it to fit, but at least the sub is angled toward the front. Even under the seat, no problems in hearing it. Running the cables in my truck was easy, your car/truck may differ. There were three cables I needed to run from the front. Power cable (red) from the truck battery. The remote cable (blue) from the head unit that tells the subwoofer that the stereo is on so you better turn on too. The cable for the control dial (black with 3.5mm tips) that comes with the subwoofer, it connects to a knob you install somewhere you can easily reach and goes to an input in the sub. It basically overrides the gain knob on the sub. And on the back of my headunit I had a set of RCA outputs (I supplied them) that I ran to the sub, but the sub doesn't have RCA inputs, only a harness to which you are supposed split the wires that go to your front speakers and reconnect them to the front speakers AND to the subwoofer. However, I ended up using Kickers 2-ch speaker wire-to-RCA adapter. If you do use the spearker wires that come out of your head unit then you won't need to run the remote wire (the blue one). I tried some of the other powered subs from Rockville, Pioneer, yeah they were $99 to $120, but this one was so much better. I honestly couldn't hear the difference with or without the sub with the cheaper ones. This is plenty loud. I have a 23 year old and at 50% volume he asks me to turn it down after 3 or 4 songs, so I may be almost 50, but I still like my music a little loud. If you fall within frame I painted myself in as far as musical tastes, then you WILL NOT be disappointed with this unit. ... show more

  • The little sub that could....or could not.
I needed a very small sub for my 65 Ford F100. There is literally no room anywhere for a normal sub and even this Kicker Hideaway doesn't fit under the bench seat but this is one of the smallest subs I could find. I installed this on the center hump between the seat and the dash. Fits perfect with a little room to spare. I wasn't sure what to expect from this 8" sub. I have a 15" sub in a 4.3 cubic foot sealed enclosure installed in my SUV and I have a Pioneer TS-SWX3002 12" Shallow-Mount sub in my sedan. The Kicker 8" had a lot to live up to if I was going to keep it but ultimately with no room for anything bigger I figured it couldn't hurt to try. So installation was pretty quick. I also bought the Kicker KISL 2-Channel K-Series Speaker Cable to RCA Adapter. The first time I powered it on I was rewarded with...nothing. The LED was blue but no sound. After looking over the RCA lines I discovered that my RCA cable was bad. Swapped in another and I had bass. Not just little bass but honest to god bass. In the small cab of my truck this things actually hits pretty hard. It doesn't have the output of my 15" sub with 1500 watts of power and I didn't expect that but it shockingly sounds really good. Solid, tight bass and really fills out the sound int he cab nicely. I have to say I'm a little shocked that it sounds as good as it does. I have never owned anything made by Kicker before but they have won me over with this little sub. I've read all the bad reviews about this sub not lasting and I hope I don't have to live through that myself. I want to set it and forget it. Speaking of settings; I have the bass boost off, xover set to 100Hz and the gain right at the middle mark. It's perfect. It is not they kind of bass that people outside of my truck will hear but when I'm in the truck it sounds great! If I ever move my gas tank from the cab to the bed I'll put in a nice box with a couple of 12's but until then this Kicker Hideaway will provide me just enough bass to put a smile on my face. Really...it hits much better than I thought it would. I'm shocked at what this 8" sub can do. Updated: 2/27/17 went from 5 stars to 1 start in one day. So when I first installed this unit I had no output from the sub. Eventually I swapped out the RCA cable and it started working. I thought all was well but the very next day (today) the sub stopped outputting again. Now I have tested the RCA cable and it is fine. The sub's LED light is blue which indicates everything is hooked up and working properly, but NO SOUND. I without a doubt received a defective unit. I should have taken the negative reviews more seriously. It is a great concept and while it worked it sounded fantastic but something is wrong internally so it is a no go for me. Thanks to Amazon the return process is easy. ... show more

  • This subwoofer is AMAZING!
This subwoofer is AMAZING! Don't understand all of the hate. People must be deaf??? Here are a few tips if you are looking to buy this. -I was looking for a compact powered subwoofer to put under the drivers seat. I searched what I could about them on google and youtube. -I wanted something that wasn't too pricey. Bang for your Buck! -My car has 9 factory speakers. Sound was always great BUT the bass wasn't the best. After a few years, the built-in subwoofer started to rattle. Music wasn't that enjoyable after a while. I knew I needed to replace the sub with something better. - I didn't want a HUGE box in my trunk nor did I want break my car into pieces with a super loud subwoofer. To each their own. 1)Make sure it fits wherever you are going to place it. I was able to check one out at Best Buy and they were happy to see if it would fit. 2)Get it installed by a professional. Unless you really know how to install them. Best Buy was able to install it for me. They knew what they were doing and were quick to install with lifetime warranty. 3)ADJUST settings. Play around with ALL of the settings on the sub and on your car until you get that perfect balanced bass. Do not crank it up all the way when you first get it. 4)Ease into it and let it break in. Mine didn't sound that great at first. But after a week or two it started to sound much much better. This thing is LOUD. I was skeptical after reading the negative reviews. People must have not installed it correctly or maybe they are deaf?? I'm a young lad and this thing is loud! Best place to put it is under the drivers seat for the BEST experience. Put it anywhere else and I'm sure you experience won't be as good. I have an Acura sedan and this thing shakes the inside and all of the passengers, they love it! I am not even exaggerating. My sounds system sounds more full now. Like it is meant to sound. I listen to all kinds of music A-Z. The bass thumps and shakes. You really experience the music. Hip Hop and EDM listeners will love this. I have no complaints with the LOWs. The music sounds just as it should. I love that you can adjust the bass with the knob. Every knob on this system I have it at 1/3 for a pleasant music experience. If I really want to feel the bass rattle me, I only have to increase it a bit. But there is no need to crank it that much. If you want to set car alarms off and let everyone know you have a giant sub in your trunk, go get a big boxed sub, I don't know why you are even looking at this. If you wan to enjoy your music as it should be then do yourself a favor and get this. The quality is great, metal frame that is nice and sturdy. The shipping was fast and have had no problems. Let just see how it does in the long run. I was skeptical just like you and undeceive about which sub to get. This was the right choice for the money. I enjoy every commute or long drive more now. ... show more

  • Just the right amount of umph and bump to make me want to drive more!
I have been thoroughly impressed thus far. I have a 2014 Jeep Cherokee with the Alpine system in it and I have been driving my wife's 2014 Nissan Altima non-Bose edition to work and back because of the improved fuel mileage. I needed something to add depth to her system to bring it close to the caliber of the Alpine system in my Jeep. I looked at the Infiniti BassLink, but after several bad reviews about frying fuses, etc. I went with this. Kicker has a good brand reputation and at 150 watts, I knew it had to be better than my 50-watt Bazooka tube I had in my 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. Installation was simple and it fits nicely in the vehicle. I have seen bad reviews saying they are blowing and that there are issues. My recommendation is to allow the unit to break in before playing heavy. I base-lined mine to my system by setting everything at max gain and power and the x-over at 80Hz, then I set the head unit level just over where there was distortion with the bass and treble at 0. I then started with the head unit settings and then adjusted the gain down until the distortion went away. Then I adjusted the crossover, and for me with listening to alternative, country, and trance, the sweet spot was about 70Hz. Now the system is nicely tuned. To break it in I played it at no more than the second notch on the remote bass control for two or three days. Now I can crank it with no distortion or feedback and it plays nicely. Doesn't rattle the car or my brain and you can't hear the truck or the bass outside the car, but the lows are punchy and add depth. It isn't three 8s and 600 watts or two 10s, but it adds every bit of depth I need in the system to make it comparable to my Alpine setup in my Jeep. I only gave four stars because of the height of the unit. It doesn't fit under most newer car seats with a/c ducting under them or automatic seat controls. I had to mount mine in the trunk on the back of the rear seat but will be pulling my rear seat center arm rest out and mounting it there and phasing it 180. ... show more

  • Perfect for a tiny car like mine; may not be perfect for yours. Good for well-rounded audio.
I drive a 1997 Suzuki X-90. It's a small 2-seater convertible with a tiny trunk. I needed something to add more depth to the sound and still be crisp and clear when cranked up loudly at 80 MPH with the tops off, preferably sacrificing minimal cargo space. Needless to say, the puny 5.25 in. speakers (Kicker 40CS54 x4) just weren't doing either on their own. This was the perfect solution. I had low expectations of a sub in such a small enclosure, but they could have been very high and I'd still be impressed. I bought 2 and installed one under each seat. I spent an hour tweaking the crossover, phase, and EQ, and that was time very well spent. Don't expect earth-rattling bass from these; they won't give you that. What they do give me is a very rich auditory experience and the feeling of having monstrous living room speakers tucked into the recesses of my tiny car. If you want to rattle the windows of the car next to you, look elsewhere for a 12-inch driver in a ported enclosure. But these round out the sound so well and add just enough punch to turn heads. (My X-90 turns plenty of heads without it and the former is what I was after anyway.) If the cabin of your car is larger than mine, and it likely is, 2 of these still may not be enough depending on your expectations. I should mention also that the included wiring harness is awesome. You do have to use the harness that comes with it and some of its wires could be a little short, so you may need to do some splicing. But what you get in return is a single plug for everything where your sub goes. If you're concerned about the subs getting damaged or stolen, just unplug and slide out. It doesn't get any more elegant than that. My crossover settings: For the subs, 100 Hz low pass with 12dB/octave rolloff. For rear 5.25 speakers in rear wall, 100 Hz high pass @ 12dB/octave. For front 5.25 speakers in smaller door cavities, 125 Hz high pass @ 12dB/octave. Some tips: 1. Measure before you buy. These fit under the seats in my X-90 with room to spare. They fit under the seats in my 2004 Honda Civic, but only barely. They may not fit at all in yours. 2. These won't rattle the neighbor's windows. They probably won't even rattle yours. They just add incredible depth and a little bit of punch. 3. One may not be enough. Be prepared to buy two. 4. For the best sound from this sub and your main speakers, use a good crossover with both low pass and high pass filters, and make sure to set the crossover cutoffs and the phase right. Don't skimp. 5. I can't speak to longevity because I've only been using them for a month. But if you keep your bass boost and loudness on and your subwoofer gain up high, you're going to destroy these and you should consider getting something else. Update: I've now been using these for 14 months with no issues at all. I play my music loudly, especially in summer when the top is off and I need to compensate for wind noise. They still sound just as good as the day I installed them. Update 8/2020: 2 years, 2 months and still going strong. Not a single complaint. ... show more

  • Good lows lacks mid bass
Well, it was easy to hook up. Fit in a tight place. Has good under 100 MHz bass but not much else. We installed in a Jeep CJ 7. This unit does not have a RCA line in only high level speaker inputs so we couldn't use the stereos built in Sub controls it would not work. This is not a 3 star rating just on the product it works as advertised but rating is for the lack of a good description of what this unit produces as far as bass. If you have no bass in your stereo only mids and highs it will lack the mid bass sounds and bass guitar notes will be lacking. We are adding a 8" woofer with an amp for 100mhz and up mid base but we are leaving this unit installed for the low bass it does a good job at that frequency. ... show more

  • Great sub ! Read this about the mandatory (but easy) positive wire installation that connects directly to the vehicle battery.
I read everything I could on underseat subwoofers before buying this Kicker. From the reviews it SEEMED that this Kicker product has the best bass for the buck. Up till wiring this subwoofer, I had not fiddled with auto stereo installations since I was a kid in the pre 8 track days when Muntz started marketing the first 4 track tape cartridges....yea...that's FOUR tracks. Now....this sub fits under just about any auto seat and sounds great bolted down or not bolted down. The only installation step I was worried about is the necessity of passing a large red positive wire THROUGH THE FIREWALL so that the fused wire can be directly attached to the positive terminal of the car battery. Turns out this was very simple and there are Youtube how-to videos. Briefly.....DISCONNECT BATTERY.....and then look up under your dash...usually just above and left of the brake...and see a thick bunch of wires that go through a very large rubber grommet on the firewall. You simply straighten out most of a coat hanger and, from the passenger compartment, gently poke WITHOUT FORCE that coat hanger through the rubber grommet till the end can be seen in the engine compartment when you lift up the hood on your vehicle. Then, tape or attach the big red wire to the coat hanger end in the passenger compartment. Then, from the engine compartment, and pull it through, route the wire, and attach this big red wire (with the included in-line fuse) to the positive terminal of your vehicle's battery. Easy. Another tip....given a choice of high or low level inputs, use the low level subwoofer RCA jack(s) on the back of your auto stereo for the theoretical best sound. The only downside to this purchase was that Kicker did not include low level RCA plugs that must be wired to this unit. They are inexpensive and must be purchased separately. Hey Kicker folks....listen up....ya really need to include those RCA plugs in the box. Overall....I know you are going to be pleasantly surprised at the great bottom this sub adds to even your factory speakers. Nobody is paying me or giving me free stuff to write this. ... show more
