In my profession, (well, okay, I’m semi-retired and farming is more of a hobby than a profession, since our 12 donkeys and four horses cost me much more than I make from selling hay and donkeys), tarps are a fact of life. Whether it’s temporarily storing 5’ Round Bales of hay outside until I get around to re-stacking the hay barn, or covering a broken piece of equipment from weather until a needed part comes in, I use tarps constantly. (Things always break and re-stacking round bales requires putting the bale spike on a skid steer or tractor and pulling the bales out, then putting them all back in, making tighter stacks to fit the additional ones … it’s kind of a pain for a guy who just wants to be lazy). Anyway, often I end up buying tarps that say “HEAVY DUTY” on the package, but should say, “HEAVIER THAN TISSUE PAPER” … perhaps with the word “SLIGHTLY” in there, somewhere. This ain’t that. It says 10 mil, which I wish I could trust, but there’s gotta be something special to the measurement of tarps and trash bags in millimeters, because sometimes 10 mil is thick, but sometimes it seems like they measured the tarp and other things nearby to come up with that thickness. Fortunately, this ain’t the latter. (It’s actually thick and heavy-ish). I can’t really speak to the longevity, since I’ve only had it a month or so, but I did use it to tightly cover a brush pile that I needed to burn right after a heavy rain, (so the ground around it would be saturated and lessen the chance of spread), and it did great. I mention this because, for anyone who has ever tightly-stretched a thin, lesser-made tarp over brush, you know that sticks poke through and the tarp instantly tears, or grommets will rip out and leave the thing flapping hopelessly in the wind. (And here in Missouri, we get our fair share of wind with our rain storms!) I’m happy to say that this held up to the stretching, pulling, snagging, cursing and pulling again of the brush pile covering and not a single grommet failure or tear resulted! The weave of a tarp’s material is also important — like those household trash bags that have the checkered pattern in the plastic, this one has a good crosshatch weave that held up well — and the storm that I covered the brush pile from was not a wimpy one. Overall, this tarp is a great value for the money. Yeah, there are better, heavier tarps out there, but you’ll pay dearly for some of them. And, if you are at all like me, you seek out the more affordable options that will get the job done … not just buy the most expensive option, assuming that it’s the best. (Often it’s not). So, if you don’t want to spend $100+ on a smallish, 10x12 tarp, but you want something that’s going to get the job done and hold up well to be used a second and third time, (and beyond that, of you’re lucky!), then this is a safe bet.
