  • Excellent product, be aware of installation quirks and it will save you time
These are great for any kind of light that you can put on a schedule. We use them for outdoor exterior lights. The wifi is sensitive enough to find our router and they seem to turn on and off the way they're supposed to. You have to install them using the Kasa phone app. That requires attaching your phone to the wifi network created by the light bulb. Weird, and a little slow, but it works. If your phone asks you to stop using wifi and rely on cellular for data, say NO otherwise it will stop talking to the Kasa bulb and you won't be able to finish installation. ... show more

  • Need new firmware to work on larger networks as of 2021-09
Update 2: After almost a month of back and forth with support I finally got ahold of an engineer. The Engineer was very skilled and systematically helped look and check a number of settings and ended up with the resolution of downloading a Beta firmware and loading it onto the first bulb. I completed the remaining updates and so far has been stable for a day. Lots of work to get to this point, I hope they roll out a general update soon. Update 1: Previously I had tried after reading a few reviews, I can confirm what others have found out that if you have a larger home with many Access points, or mine that is old and has heavy plaster walls so I have multiple AP's These WILL NOT work. There is a bug in the bulbs that will not allow them to connect if you have the same SSID broadcasting on multiple AP's. As a test I setup a single AP, with a new SSID and connected my phone and the bulb to that and it worked just fine, however that solution is not a great one. I don't want to setup a separate SSID just for these bulbs on every AP as well as my main SSID. Original review: So I'm 0 for 8 on these lights now unless I use the work around. 2 got so far to upgrading the firmware when they would start, then drop off the network and change their name to the default TP-LINK_Smart Bulb_XXXX then become greyed out and unable to connect again. The other two got to the point there I could rename them then you would get the "something went wrong" and they could never rename them. All 4 actually got stuck at that point but turning two off and on and waiting for them to flash did the trick and they were able to get past that. But I'm an hour and 10 minutes in and so far these are pretty much junk compared to the MANY other TP link switches, dimming switches, plain, and 3 way, many of the plain switched outlets, and 8 or so of the power metering outlets, metering surge strips, the plain 3 outlet surge strips, a couple of the outdoor outlets as well as a couple of the color changing bulbs. Pretty much EVERYthing else from they is awesome working in great harmony with Alexa, and some basic IFTTT simple scripts. I'm about the click another bulb off and on with a second between each power cycle to reset it again, then I will have another 10 minutes to contemplate at it tries to connect to the network again. Hopefully this is a bad batch and has some faulty firmware. My other gripe is for TP-links support is if you send an email, you will get 1 and only 1 response per day, luckily the one previous faulty product I had was from Amazon and I could return it for full refund from them otherwise TP link was going to charge to return. 2 hours in, I'm subtracting a star as these don't even function as light bulbs even once they have flaked out. They have an annoying blink maybe once per minute. I have documented my findings and troubleshooting steps and opened a ticket. I was SO positive about how well all my TP link gear has worked so far that I already tossed the boxes into recycling and I just went to fish them out of the can. ... show more

  • Not so great connecting
I was very excited about the prospect of smart lightbulbs becoming more reasonable in price but Kasa (Tplink) misses the mark here. I have multiple devices from them and most have worked great. For some reason, these started off working great but within about an hour they were sporadically disconnecting from the WiFi and turning on by themselves. I tried deleting them and reinstalling them several times and I could usually get 3 to connect solidly but that fourth one just didn’t want to stay connected. This is problematic as they are all a part of a group connected to a four bulb ceiling fixture. ... show more

  • They Work Great!
Easy to install app on phone and tablet, and work perfectly. Have two in bedroom…..they come on half an hour before official sundown time. They will adjust as sundown time changes over the year. Off is a set time, and they turn off slowly with the fade feature. My cousin sent me a KASA light bulb (not one that changes color) and two mini smart plugs. I’ve ordered and ordered for myself and for gifts. We all like the system! ... show more

  • Clean connection
Connected cleanly with my 2.4gHz capable router (others did not). It helped that I already had a Kasa/TP Link device installed, so that saved several steps. But TP Link is a reliable brand with long network connection experience going back to the 90s. They have definitely stayed up with the times, including the ability to work with current dual band routers (5gHz/2.4gHz). ... show more

  • Home automation for safety and comfort
I bought a single bulb from my local Amazon 4-star store to try it out, since I was sick of coming home to a dark home, and especially for the holidays when I would be out of town. It was a breeze to set up: You download the Kasa app to your mobile device, then you set up your account, and pair your bulb to your app. From there, you are able to control when the light turns on or off with multiple settings/schedule. You can have it turn on at the same time each night, but to mimic real life, I scheduled my desk lamp to turn on at sunset, when I would normally be patting around for the light switch. You are able to remotely dim your bulb, which is great when you're trying to set up mood lighting. Multiple bulbs? Not a problem--you can name each one: LR desk, KIT counter, GAR. This brand also offers smart plugs, which are awesome if you'd like to control exactly when all the appliances in your kitchen are activated, especially if they aren't newer smart models. ... show more

  • The best "cheaper" bulbs
I have tried some of the bulbs that are cheaper and had problems with setup, they won't stay connected, become non responsive, etc. Some of them are bluetooth only which is not good for range and is more susceptible to interference than WiFi. The Kasa bulbs are fairly straightforward in their set up (just be sure that your phone is on the 2.4 wifi signal) and are dimmable. I tend to be the "go to" guy for friends that want to set up smart bulbs/outlets in their home so I have tried a lot of different bulbs and outlets (especially since some friends have already bought cheaper bulbs. If you don't need Apple HomeKit support, these are definitely the best option. ... show more
