First, the bulbs. The brightness is excellent, and appears to be as bright as a standard 60-watt incandescent bulb, if not quite as bright as a LIFX bulb. The color reproduction is exceptional, and the greens, reds, blues, and yellows are all vibrant. As good or better than the LIFX, and MUCH better than first and second-gen Hue bulbs. Ease of setup was great; plug in, use the app to set up, done within 2 minutes. Adding it to my Google Home took a few more minutes, but no hassle. I got the first few on sale for Prime Day at around 5 dollars a bulb, so it was a fantastic deal. A secondary concern, the Green and Yellow aren't as vibrant as they are on my LIFX bulbs, or the newer Hue bulbs. Not terrible, but not super-impressive. That said... they're a tenth the cost, so... The follow-up experience was ordering through the Amazon Warehouse program. Ideally, you get returns and lightly used products, and that's generally been my experience. In this case... hoo boy. The first pack was half empty (2 of 4 bulbs missing). I notified Amazon and started the replacement, and the next pack arrived a week or so later. This pack was full... but the wrong bulbs. Right brand - Sylvania Smart+, but only the white, not color bulbs. So I think in the future, I'll just buy full price (still WAY WAY cheaper than Hue or LIFX bulbs) or wait for sales. Not only would I buy them again (though not through the Amazon Warehouse program), but I already have, and will again in the future. The bulbs are cheap enough that I don't mind if they end up lasting not so long. The one thing to remember is that I don't think there's a setting for power-on behavior like Hue bulbs; in the event of a power outage, it means your bulbs are probably going to come on full-intensity. If they're going in a bedroom where you're worried about this, you might be better served by the Hue equivalent.

The Sylvania Smart bulbs were an easy setup on my mesh WiFi system. However there are a few issues in getting it up and running…. Please note that I'm dealing with Apple products and apps so all I say here is in relationship to set up in Apple World and the only problems I had relate to Apple functions. The beginning of the process went just fine. First you need to download the Sylvania app. There are a couple them and you need to download the Sylvania Smart WiFi app (it says WiFi on the icon.) Second turn on the bulb and tap the + sign in the upper right corner of the screen in the app and follow the instructions. All four of my bulbs were found and loaded fairly quickly... Now, for this particular bulb, the $34.99 for 4 bunch it says that they work with Siri and they do, but, they do not work with the Apple Homekit App (although you will need Homekit during the install process). Apparently, there is another Sylvania bulb with the 8-digit number and or a QR code for adding the bulb to Apple Homekit but these ain't them. If you end up with the ones that can be scanned or that have the 8-digit code, there is another set of instructions to follow and this ain’t them. Short version is that you need to set up a group of one or more bulbs in the Sylvania WiFi app and then you do an automation routine and select the group and at the end of that process you can create a Siri shortcut. After that you need to go into the Apple Homekit App and into your “user” profile and turn on the "personal requests" option. When all is done you can ask Siri to respond to the automation script you set up, but you can't see the device in the Apple Home app. I made the steps brief because there are step by step videos from Sylvania on the net that will lead you through the process and Siri herself told me I had to turn on "Personal Requests." in order for her to do what I asked. Apple, if you are listening, why, if Siri knows what needs to be done, can't she just ask if she can do it for me? But I digress. I knocked off a star for making me have to figure this whole process out and for not, in an easy to note manner, making it clear that Siri doesn’t equal Homekit and because yet again I have to use a separate app to access smart devices, this now makes 3.

Watch out Hue, Sylvania is coming for you....

Philip's Hue lighting products have carved out a top-end niche as providers of programmable LED lighting. Others, like LIFX and Sengled have tried to muscle in on Hue's perch, LIFX with wifi connectivity not requiring a hub and bright lights, Sengled by going the Hue route with hub and repeater lights, but at about 1/2 to 2/3 the price of equivalent Hue bulbs. So, owning bulbs from all three of the main programmable-LED manufacturers, I was intrigued to try these Sylvania programmable LED bulbs. I don't know if Sylvania, recently spun off from GE, intends to go into this market in a big way. But these bulbs should make a splash--and make the established competitors wary. Sylvania has been around a long time and is known as a quality manufacturer of incandescent and flourescent home bulbs as well as a variety of commercial lighting products. This is their first serious foray into programmable home LED lighting, as far as I'm aware, and I hope they fill out their portfolio because these bulbs are seriously cheap and excellent. I'm not a techie. I don't measure lumens. I only eyeball the lights. But I'm discriminating and this is what I've found. The Good: 1. Cost. Twenty-eight dollars for four bulbs. Not just four while LEDs, but four fully-programmable, full-color 60-watt equivalent bulbs. That's just $7 each! 2. The light. Strong, bright in both white and colors. 3. Ease of setup. Exceptionally easy installation and setup. I had none of the problems others complain about here with my 2.4GHz and 5GHz (which share a unified SSID) confusing the bulbs. In fact, I’ve had more issues with Hue and Sengled installations than with these bulbs. I’m not denying the problems others say they’ve experienced, but I’ve learned that with IOT installations, patience and a willingness to experiment is often necessary, even with the top products in the category. 4. App. Good basic app. 5. Worked seamlessly with my Google Home once the Syvlania account was established. The Bad: Nothing really. OK, I would like to be able to schedule by sunup and sundown, and the app doesn't appear to do that, but neither do many others. I haven't checked to see if there is an IFTT plugin for the lights as there is for Sengled. But this is a common frustration I have. The absolute best for this is Lutron and no one else comes close. A few more details: OK. This sounds like boosterism and it is. I want to see prices fall in this market. I want competitors to Hue and Sengled and LIFX. But I want quality first, not cheapo, no-name, fly-by-night crud from overseas where every light appears to be a rebadged version of another, all with suspiciously positive reviews. This light may be the one I've been looking for. Installation is a breeze. Download and install the Sylvania Wifi app, register your email, respond to an email verifying your address, choose a password, power on the bulb, search for it in the app, enter the password to your wifi network, permit location access (or deny, it works either way) and you're there. Simple. The bulb looks as powerful and colorful as my Hue and Sengled bulbs. It's impressive. The app allows you to set certain scenes ("Effects"), none of which mean much to me, but may to you. The app comes with reading, leisure, awake and and night effects already installed and you can make your own choosing color and brightness along with static, strobe and fade effects. Finally, the light remembers its last setting if its power is turned off, returning to its previous state when the power resumes. I'll update this review if necessary, but these lights are the real deal in my opinion.

These bulbs have plenty of problems but being overpriced Phillips hue bulbs is not one of them.

These bulbs are cheap; they cost a fraction of what Phillips hue bulbs cost. They are also not very good. If you just need some coverage (I put them in the basement kids room where it doesn't really matter) then you can't beat the price for colour bulbs. But I would recommend that you pay a little more for something else. Here are the issues I've had: Setup didn't work the first time. I'm not sure why but it failed a couple times so I tried to reset the bulbs. They all happen to be on the same switch and the reset pattern didn't work consistently. So, every time I tried it I had one of two bulbs not reset or go back to setup mode. Finally I had to unscrew and rescrew them until they were all in setup mode. I think I had another setup problem but I don't specifically remember (I think I had to do the alexa integration twice because they didn't import properly). I've had problems setting up hue bulbs too, but these seem like a more consistent problems rather than a once in a while thing. When I first added the bulbs too my network it ground to a halt. I don't know if the bulbs were stealing all my data or just causing issues with WiFi signal negotiation but it took about 3 to 5 days for my network to recover back to full speed. And for the first maybe 6 hours nothing else on the network could maintain a connection or get internet. No you don't need a hub but these things will thrash your router. Once all that settled down the bulbs worked ok for a couple days and then the most annoying problem cropped up. I have two bulbs per fixture and every couple of days one of the 4 stops working. It is usually the same one but all of them have stopped working at one point or another. In my situation I have to open my fixtures, unscrew the bulb that's not working, screw it back in, and then close the fixtures up. If I turn the switch off and on it does not fix the issue. Not sure what the deal is here. On a positive note it seems like pretty much anyone can do colors and scenes better than the main Phillips hue bulbs, these ones included. The colors are pretty bright, and pretty good (I'm not doing testing or anything, if you're that kind of person why are you looking at a $5 light bulb?). I like the scenes the app has but of course in day to day operation I only used alexa voice commands and the colours she supports. Again, if you're going to buy these you must realize that they are a cheap bulb which is why even after all the problems I give it an average score. Not good, but worth the price.

Been using these bulbs for almost 7 years now. Originally installed 12 of them, and only 2 have failed. By fail, they still worked, just wouldn't obey the on/off schedule anymore. They link to the app very easy and quick. I like that you get schedules, programs, you can set them to sunrise and sunset. You can have them flash to the beat of your music. Theres also different preset themes you can choose. They link to Google home easily, and allows you to control them through there with no hub needed.

Cheap way to add smart bulbs to your home

I've been slowly getting into the smart home for awhile now. I wanted Philips Hue but we all know how expensive those bulbs are. I was browsing bulbs and saw theses bulbs on sale so I decided to order some along with some Treatlife color smart bulbs which are normally around the same price (both bulbs are generally $35 regular price at the time of this review). One thing to immediately note about these bulbs, they have a note on the box and in the instructions saying they are not for use in fully enclosed fixtures so keep that in mind. When I received the bulbs I was impressed with how much they looked like regular bulbs once installed in a fixture. I've had CFL bulbs in all of my fixtures for years so it was nice to see the more traditional look in my fixtures again. Setup was easy. As soon as I applied power the bulbs started flashing. I downloaded the Sylvania Smart+ app, signed up for an account and connected to the wifi network I was installing the bulbs on. The app found the bulbs and added them one by one. The whole process took around 15 mins. Subsequent pairing were way shorter since I didn't have to sign up for an account. I noticed these bulbs mentioned CRI rating so I decided to compare them against another popular cheap smart bulb manufacturer, Treatlife. These bulbs are bright when using regular white light. I couldn't really tell a difference between these and the Treatlife as they both were bright and had tunable whites. The Sylvania bulbs showed their oomph once I started testing colors. The colors were brighter and more vibrant than the Treatlife bulbs. The difference was really noticeable so if you're looking for bulbs that are pretty bright when displaying colors then I would go with these bulbs. Connecting with Amazon and Google was a simple process as well. Just search for Sylvania in the respective apps and it should allow you to login and connect to the Sylvania account you created. Once you do that you'll be able to control the lights via Alexa or Google Home. I was so impressed I ordered 8 more bulbs. But I admittedly came across the problem a few reviewers mentioned. One of the bulbs would always flicker and flash. Initially it started when displaying blue or white. Yellow, red and green displayed fine but over time the problem got worst and worst. The bulb flickered and flashed anytime it was on no matter the color. I ended up putting that bulb in a rarely used lamp just to keep it out of the way. But that's the only bulb I've had problems with out of the 12 I received. Lastly for all my techies, unfortunately this bulb does not interact with the Smart Life or Tuya Smart app. You HAVE to use the Sylvania app. The bulbs use a Tuya chipset but the pairing process always times out on the "cloud" step. The app detects the bulb but can never connect it to the cloud. So if you use Home Assistant, Homebridge etc for local control you will not be able to control these bulbs locally via 3rd party apps. There aren't even any integrations or add ons available for these bulbs in those platforms. So if you're trying to get everything into one app unfortunately these bulbs will not allow you to do that unless you use the Alexa app or the Google home app. Any other 3rd party app integration is non existent. That could change in the future but at the moment you're out of luck. Nonetheless I have enjoyed these bulbs. Easy setup, bright colors, bright regular light and pretty reliable. They are also pretty cheap as most full color smart bulbs cost a little more. I can't comment on reliability yet as I've only had these bulbs for a couple of months now but they are all still working with the exception of the one bulb that flickers/flashes. I do notice that a couple of bulbs occasionally stop responding but a quick power cycle fixes that problem. All in all I recommend these bulbs if you're looking for a cheap way to add some smart bulbs to your home, especially if you want bright colors without paying $40+ per bulb. If you're a techie that wants to integrate these bulbs into a third party smart platform other than Amazon or Google then I would look elsewhere.
