This is my first home sewing machine. I worked in a factory for several years which utilized Juki industrial sewing machines. After researching many entry-level machines, I decided that a good quality machine was an ideal even if it cost a little more. The Juki brand is well known for quality, and the HZL-70HW does not disappoint. It was relatively easy to set up and the instructions were helpful. I was able to get sewing pretty quickly. The machine will be used for alterations, home decor, and repairs. I have no doubt that the machine last for many years. I used it to alter some king-sized pillows down to standard size using the overcasting foot. After getting acquainted with the machine, this job was not difficult at all. I bought this for my daughter as her first sewing machine. She started with a borrowed 40 year old mechanical Pfaff and demonstrated she was ready for something bigger. There are a lot of bells and whistles, but they seem very accessible. My daughter really likes the various stitch patterns. This is the first Yuki sewing machine I buy. I usually buy other popular brand. This Yuki far far superseded my expectations. I have not had any problems with tension or anything else that may be a “norm” for the other brand. It is perfect for beginners and especially legally blind person (a person with partial vision) , this, due to the speed control and easily accessible online detailed instructions. ... show more

    • Tension Issues
It's not a whole lot different from every other plastic cheaply made sewing machines they make now. No matter how much I try to tweak the tension, it does not sew well and the thread gets stuck inside the machine frequently. The bobbin loading was very uneven and would not thread without a whole lot of tweaking. I'd gladly pay a lot for a sewing machine that just worked. It's just not this one. ... show more

    • A brand new machine that jams in the bobbin mechanism
For $400 + shipping I received a machine that stitched a few sample fabrics, then started jamming inside the bobbin mechanism every time I tried to sew. New machine unreliability appears to be one of the features.

Sews like butter. Very easy to learn and use. Does not look intimidating. Light enough to travel with. Sturdy enough to be my main machine, and I haven't felt the need to upgrade. This is a big deal. I always want to upgrade!
