  • Some opinions and some facts to consider.
Style: Toyota Tacoma 2016-2019
The stock radio in my 2017 Tacoma is lacking. I researched Android head units and landed on this one because of the stock look. My Tacoma had the smaller radio so I had to also purchase the larger dash bezel from my local Toyota. The unit installed relatively easily. It was tricky to get it lined up with the stock mounts but it's doable with some patience. Installed, the unit looks great. It has a very convincing stock look aside from the "mic" and "rst" on its face. The unit does most of what the stock one did. Now I can play music on Youtube Music straight from the app on the head unit instead of from my phone. I like that. Looks nice, plays nice. The included canbus works with a few caveats. My up and down buttons on the steering wheel are now reversed. And, my doors used to lock immediately after shifting out of park. Now they lock when the vehicle reaches 15 MPH. Not a big deal, but I would have liked to have this function exactly how it used to. I emailed Joying about this along with other questions. I asked what the proper canbus profile is for my truck. They didn't acknowledge this question. This next gripe was an oversight on my part so I'm not knocking off points for it. But, I was under the impression this would behave like an android tablet and allow me to use bluetooth peripherals. It does not. You can not link up a keyboard, gamepad, remote or anything of the sort. Bluetooth only functions with Joying's products and with your phone as a dialer. This was a disappointment. Speaking of bluetooth, the phone support works fine. You can talk hands free after connecting your phone to the head unit. You can answer and end calls with the steering wheel controls. That's pretty much where this functionality ends. The phone interface is sort of plain and ugly. You can not place calls via google assistant ("Hey Google.") And, here's the big one. You can't change the ringtone that plays through the speakers. And, boy oh boy, it's a bad ringtone. Can't change the volume of the ringtone independently either. Does not support anything having to do with text messages. Can not get an alert for an incoming text. Can not get the message to appear on the screen when it comes in. Here's another big disappointment for me. There are absolutely no push notifications. Not a one. For instance, I was able to install Google Duo and place a voice call. If I have an incoming Duo call and Duo is not currently in the foreground I will not know about it. No notifications at all. Another deciding factor in my choice to purchase from Joying was all the fanfare I've heard about their customer service. However, I'm not really getting that impression. I've been emailing them the past few days with these issues. Takes 24 hours to get a response and I get that response in the middle of the night while I'm sleeping. And the help I'm getting isn't as described by the Joying fans. In response to my last email I was sent an update file (I wasn't told what it would do they just told me I should install it.) After it installed it made absolutely no discernible difference and everything I had changed on the unit had been erased. All profiles, apps, settings. Everything erased. In conclusion, the head unit looks nicer in my truck. It plays music. Navigation works well. So, the bare essentials are there. Only time will tell how it holds up. But, these other issues and disappointments have me continuing my search. This is an improvement, but it's not everything I was hoping for. If I find something that ticks all these other boxes I'll be returning this one. Joying, if you're reading this send me a unit without all these brick walls in place and I'll send this one back. I'll happily pay more for it, too. It's Android. Synonymous with open-source freedom. That ain't this. ... show more

  • So far so good
Style: Toyota Tacoma 2016-2019
Installed on my 2018 Tacoma TRD off-road with JBL. Install was pretty straight forward. Rear view camera works great although I’m not crazy about the second reverse overlay that turns with the steering wheel - seems pointless me. Also wish it had a truck and not a car on it. Apple CarPlay works great. Only had one instance it crashed and rebooted. Most time is connect wirelessly within 10-15 seconds ... show more

  • Dissapointing
Style: Toyota Tacoma 2016-2019
Install was easy although you need to run their included microphone - the stock one wont work. You can easily just unclip the stock microphone, and move it to the side and wedge theirs in its place. Same with the GPS which was easily mounted near the top of the windshield by the rearview mirror. Day 1 - GPS worked, music worked, but would not auto-play music when vehicle started. Unit would turn on and off with the truck like it should. Apps installed easily once I logged into the Google Play Store. Wireless Android Auto and even Wired Android Auto would not work. I Emailed support, they asked for a screenshot of the version number. They said I needed a firmware update and sent me the link. Day 2. I loaded the firmware onto a USB drive and updated the head unit. This is NOT just a firmware update but completely wipes and resets any custom settings and apps which I had spent the previous day setting up. GPS wold work while stopped, but no longer track while you were driving. This is not a GPS signal issue or where the GPS antennae is mounted, as I checked in settings and it was able to see 7 GPS sattelites. Unit would no longer turn on and off with the vehicle, it would only go into a sleep mode regardless of the settings you chose (verified with voltage meter and NOT good if you're not driving your vehcile for days at a time.) Time and date randomly resets back to June 27, 2021. Android Auto would work but only after 10-15 attempts at connecting and would sometimes still randomly disconect. Wired Android Auto would randomly disconnect, regardless if the phone was locked or unlocked. Support again asked for the version number but obviously it had not changed since they last asked me to update it. Also asked me to start clipping power wires in the wiring harness which I am unwilling to do. Started the return process which they are making me pay for return shipping which I'd rather be out $40 than $390. Day 3: Boxed back up and stock head unit reinstalled. They still wanted me to try all this troubelshooting but when you market something as "plug and play" that does not mean "install and uninstall and reinstall 2 or 3 times and hack up the wiring harness." Giving it 2 stars not 1 because it DID sound 10x better than the stock head unit and the amount of sound control options is way more than what the stock head unit offers. If you just want working steering wheel controls and better audio its a decent choice. ... show more

  • Plug and Play Wireless CarPlay for 2019 Tacoma
Style: Toyota Tacoma 2016-2019
This is the best accessory that I have bought for my truck. I had carplay in other vehicles and was pretty unimpressed by the factory head unit. With the Joying I have wireless carplay and good sound for a great price. I don't use many of the other features, but I have used the vehicle settings and listened to bluetooth audio as well. The backup camera works well and has better resolution than the factory head unit. I disabled the factory moving grid and use the static one that comes as part of the Joying unit. Installation: The stereo arrived packed well and with some printed guides. There are no instructions, but it was easy enough to remove the factory unit and figure out which plug goes where. they only fit one way except for the backup camera input. There are 2 RCA male connectors and the RCA female connector needs to be connected to the male connector that is coming from the truck harness. You can connect them both and try them in reverse, but it takes a moment for the signal to come up on the screen. I switched them back and forth a couple times and was ready to quit when I waited longer and figured out which one was which. It took an hour to remove the old stereo, bolt up the new one and be talking to Siri. I have had this unit a little over a month before writing this review and it is still working flawlessly. ... show more
