I have a south-facing bay window in my kitchen that gets midday sun with a lot of heat. I hung this blackout shade in the picture window since my side windows have solar screens on the outside. I only pull it down for a few hours a day to keep the heat out. It does a great job of that and the difference was really noticeable when we had a couple of summer heatwaves. It does a good job of blocking out the light as well, even though that's not the reason I wanted it. I am using it with light blockers on the side (which also help block out heat) and I can say that it does a great job if you're looking for it to darken a room in the middle of the day. I'm not 100% satisfied with the shade's functionality. Aside from the obvious (blocking light and heat), a shade only has one other job to do - move up and down. Unfortunately, it doesn't retract with the ease I was expecting. This can be fixed by pulling the shade down, extending it until it stops, then giving it a couple quick tugs (google it and you'll find videos), but it shouldn't have this tension problem right out of the box. It was easy to install but the durability wasn’t well constructed. It wouldn’t raise up several times and when trying to adjust so it would raise properly it pulled out and ripped. Had to take it out of window.
