A good choice

I rarely leave reviews for products I purchase, but I felt compelled to write one for this. I’m very satisfied with it.

worth it
Style: Grill + Cart + Cover
extremely easy to assemble although the two pieces that hold the side trays were tricky due to the small screws and awkward angles to thread them to the rest of the base. I let it run at about 300 degrees for several hours before cooking some steaks. Got the grill up over 500 degrees which created a nicely crisp exterior and a wonderful flavor. ... show more

Great Quality Charcoal Grill Bundle with Convenient Extras
Style: Grill + Cart + Cover
I’m really impressed with the Joe Jr Portable Charcoal Grill 3-Piece Bundle by Kamado Joe! This bundle is a great option for anyone who enjoys charcoal grilling and wants something compact, versatile, and well-designed without having to invest in a full-size grill. I especially like that the package includes the grill, a protective cover, and a cart with side shelves, since those additional accessories make the entire setup more practical and convenient. Quality and Construction One of the first things that stands out about this grill is its sturdy, premium-style construction. Kamado Joe is known for its ceramic kamado grills, and the Joe Jr has the classic design that makes this type of grill so appealing. The ceramic construction is designed to retain heat effectively, which is helpful for maintaining consistent cooking temperatures and getting excellent results when grilling. It also gives the grill a substantial, durable feel compared with many lightweight portable charcoal grills. The overall design is attractive and functional, with a compact footprint that makes it suitable for smaller patios, decks, outdoor cooking areas, and other spaces where a full-size grill might be too large. It has a nice balance of portability and performance, making it appealing to someone who wants a smaller grill without giving up the benefits of charcoal cooking. Cooking Performance and Versatility What I like about the kamado-style design is its versatility. Charcoal grilling adds that classic smoky flavor that many people love, and the ceramic body helps maintain heat during cooking. This makes the Joe Jr an appealing choice for preparing burgers, steaks, chicken, pork chops, sausages, and vegetables. It can also be useful for slower, lower-temperature cooking when the charcoal and airflow are managed properly. The ability to work with different cooking temperatures gives this grill more versatility than a basic portable grill designed only for quick, high-heat cooking. The compact size is particularly appealing for smaller meals and everyday grilling. It is a practical option for couples, smaller households, or anyone who does not need the cooking capacity of a large backyard grill. As with any compact grill, the available cooking space is something to consider if you regularly prepare food for a large group. Convenient Cart with Side Shelves The included cart is one of the most useful additions to this bundle. Having a dedicated stand makes the grill easier to position at a comfortable working height instead of having to find a separate table or other suitable surface. The side shelves are another welcome feature because they provide convenient space for plates, utensils, seasonings, sauces, and food waiting to go onto the grill. Anyone who has grilled outdoors knows how helpful it is to have everything within reach rather than constantly walking back and forth to the kitchen. The cart and shelves also help create a more organized outdoor cooking station. Instead of treating the Joe Jr as a standalone portable grill, this bundle makes it easier to incorporate it into a regular backyard grilling setup. It is a thoughtful combination for someone who wants the convenience of a dedicated grilling area while still enjoying a relatively compact design. Included Grill Cover I also appreciate that the bundle includes a grill cover. Outdoor cooking equipment is an investment, so having a cover helps protect the grill when it is not being used. A cover can help shield it from dust, dirt, leaves, and ordinary outdoor exposure, depending on the weather and how the grill is stored. Having the cover included is convenient because it eliminates the need to shop for a separate accessory and ensures that there is a designated cover available for the grill. For anyone planning to keep the grill on a patio or in an outdoor cooking area, this is a useful addition. As with any grill cover, I would still recommend following the manufacturer's care and storage instructions, particularly in wet weather. Proper storage and allowing the grill to cool completely before covering it are important considerations. Size, Portability, and Storage The Joe Jr's compact design is a major advantage for people who want charcoal-grilling performance without dedicating a large amount of space to their equipment. It can be a good fit for smaller outdoor areas, and the portable format makes it more flexible than many large ceramic grills. It is worth remembering, however, that ceramic construction makes this style of grill heavier than many conventional portable grills. The term portable is best understood in that context: it has a smaller footprint and can be moved when handled appropriately, but it is not necessarily the type of lightweight grill you would casually carry long distances. The included cart helps make the grill more convenient to use in a designated outdoor space. If you plan to move it frequently, I would check the cart's mobility, the manufacturer's handling guidance, and the appropriate way to secure the grill before relocating it. Ease of Use and Maintenance For someone who enjoys charcoal cooking, this grill offers a satisfying balance between traditional grilling and temperature control. Like other kamado grills, it requires some familiarity with charcoal placement, airflow, and temperature management, but those features also provide greater control over the cooking process. Routine maintenance should be manageable with proper care. Removing cooled ash, keeping the cooking area clean, checking the vents, and following the manufacturer's cleaning recommendations can help keep the grill in good condition. The ceramic body should be handled carefully to avoid impacts, and the grill should be allowed to cool naturally rather than exposed to sudden temperature changes. The cart and side shelves provide additional surfaces that can be cleaned as needed, while the cover helps protect the grill between uses. Overall, the included accessories make the setup feel more complete and practical for regular outdoor cooking. Value for the Money I think the biggest advantage of this three-piece bundle is that it brings together the main grill and two useful accessories in one package. When comparing grill bundles, it is worth considering the combined value of the grill, cart with side shelves, and cover rather than looking at the grill alone. The cart adds convenience and creates a more functional cooking station, while the cover is a practical accessory for protecting the investment. Getting these items together can simplify the buying process and help avoid the hassle of searching for compatible accessories separately. Although a premium ceramic charcoal grill may cost more than a basic metal portable grill, the heat-retention design, charcoal flavor, compact footprint, and versatility are all factors worth considering when evaluating the overall value. For someone who will use it regularly and appreciates the kamado style of cooking, this bundle could be a worthwhile long-term addition to an outdoor cooking setup. ... show more

The cooker I didn't know I needed
Style: Grill + Cart + Cover
As a guy who already has 16 outdoor grills/smokers/cookers/wood ovens of all types, I used the same rationale for getting this one that I always do: "I don't have THIS one yet." And, admittedly, pulling the trigger on this one did take a bit more self-convincing. (OK, maybe not.) "What am I going to do with a little baby cooker like this?" "You already have an XL Big Green Egg... why get a tiny ceramic cooker that barely holds anything?" Fair questions. And now I know the answers. After just a couple of cooks on this thing, I can see it being more frequent in my rotation than others. (And, yes, I do use all of my other ones. I live in Arizona, and cook outside for almost every meal. Even in the summer. It is 110 degrees today.) As for my skeptical questions, they were answered. Most often I am cooking for the two of us. The benefits of the smaller cooker are many. Don't have to fire up and waste lots of charcoal. With a small chamber, and being ceramic, it comes up to heat more quickly. The small cooking space is not a hindrance if I'm just cooking for two. For the record, this isn't replacing my XL Egg. It fills an entirely different role. And, it does not take up much room, which is important when you have as much equipment as I do and would prefer my patio and side yard don't look like a grill museum. Some might argue it's too late for that... anyway... To touch on a few points other reviewers have mentioned... if you have not cooked on ceramic before, there is a learning curve. Better to choke down the vents early, before hitting your desired temps. Easier to bring it up than try to get it down. A little wood goes a long way for smoke. Burning lump charcoal itself will give you a wood-cooked profile. Adding too much wood can overdo it. Not to get too geeky, but when you are adding wood chunks or even chips, you mostly are getting white smoke, which is not the combusted thin blue smoke that comes from cooking purely with wood in a stick burner, after the wood has burned down to coals and continues burning. So, I recommend just some small pieces in the first hour or two if you are smoking. The downsides? Again, as others have mentioned, assembly experience will vary, depending on your ability. I fall mostly into the unhandy-but-can-do-it-if-I-must camp. When I unpack everything and stare at the many pieces and parts and fasteners, I usually cuss a bit and think, "What did I just get into? Here goes an entire morning." In fairness, things were going smoothly until having to attach the two half-rings that hold the shelves. The instructions are not clear on HOW to do this, and once I figured it out, it became apparent that someone with tiny hands and fingers designed the thing. I finally got it together after wasting 30 minutes on this, after everything else only took that amount of time up to this point. A small thing... that's it, it's a small thing. As in short. I'm 6'1", and having the stand a bit taller wouldn't have been THAT tough. I'll manage. In the pic I'm showing a cook with a couple of strips of pork belly, and some beef flanken ribs. The little baby Joe rolled smoothly at 250 for about 3 hours with only about a half-chamber of charcoal, and very little vent-tending once dialed in. And I had about a third of the charcoal left, which you can use again since closing the vents when done puts it out. Overall, a surprisingly great addition to my fleet that will get used more than I thought. OK, on the lookout now for the next cooker... ... show more

Plenty big to feed my family of 5, makes smoking and grilling a lot of fun.
Style: Grill + Cart + Cover
I kind of hate to admit, but this is my first charcoal grill. I have used propane for 20+ years and was a strictly hamburgers, steak, and hot dogs type of griller. And not only is this the first, but it's a chunk charcoal (not briquettes) grill/smoker. There's a bit of a learning curve for charcoal in general and especially with these kamado style grills where heat is retained so well that you have to learn to sneak up on the temps you want and not overshoot. You have to learn the difference in the types of smoke (white vs grey vs blue) and how much and when to add smoke wood. It's almost like a game, but one where you can end up with a wasted day and acrid meat if you lose. Still fun though. So as I jumped off the deep end with this grill I tried two things that I have never cooked before, first I did an entire rack of pork ribs. I did this directly after my "initial burn" to remove any factory oils/contaminants, which took me a bit longer than expected and I didn't add enough coal which caused a delay of game mid cook. Lesson learned. The second thing I cooked was a 9lb Boston Butt, which barely fit on the Joe Jr but was manageable. For this cook I thought I would be smart and add extra charcoal, which resulted in taking 3x as long to burn off the initial white smoke and then longer to come back down to the 275 degree temp I wanted to cook with. Another lesson learned. The good news is that these are forgiving meats and both the ribs and the pork butt turned out great. They both fit on the grill and they both provided more than enough food for my family of 5. Smoking was as easy as throwing a couple of chunks of apple smoke wood in after burning off most the white smoke and waiting for the temps to stabilize. So while the Jr obviously has less cooking versatility than the full size (with multiple heat zones, larger cook area, and room for accessories) it's large enough for most tasks and it's portability is awesome. For both of my first two cooks I was able to get the grill started out in the open and then later move under my covered deck when it started to rain. The thick ceramic shell that insulates and keeps the grill hot for so long also keeps it from throwing off too much heat so my vinyl siding and roof coverings were not affected by the heat thrown off from the grill even when doing a final high heat cleaning to burn off the drippings from the pork butt. I have already put in an order for a charcoal bucket to make removing (and reusing) unburnt charcoal easy, as well as providing a bit of standoff for the air vents to help prevent them from clogging during a long session. I expect that as long as I am carful with the heat deflector and don't drop it, this grill and the included accessories should last for many years, which is hopefully long enough for my smoking/charcoal grilling skills to develop past beginner level. The stand and integrated side tables are compact, but sturdy and provide plenty of space for prep work and enough hangars for your standard accessories. These kamado style grills are never cheap, but the Kamado Joe Jr is one of the most reasonably priced units I have found and as with everything I have seen from the Kamado Joe company it's built to last (the tools they sell are absolute units as well). I would highly recommend this unit for anyone looking to get started with charcoal grilling / smoking, and I believe it would even be sufficient for the more advanced bbq grillmasters as long as they are not cooking for a large group of people. ... show more

The best grill I’ve ever owned.
Style: Grill + Cart + Cover
The Kamado Jr. is a high-end, ceramic lined smoker and barbecue grill that is versatile, easy to use and is an excellent way to cook outdoors. The assembly instructions leave a little to be desired as they look like bad photocopies and it’s hard to see where the screws go on some steps. I have attempted to point out a couple of the trouble spots in my pictures that I posted to this review in the hopes that it will assist a few people who run into the same problems. In some places, it’s not clear which set of screw holes you’re supposed to be using or which way the screws are supposed to be oriented. The manual says assembly time should take approximately 30 minutes. I write manuals for a living and I’m very good at assembling things. It took me just over an hour to get this done. So plan accordingly. The grill itself is fantastic. The heat retention of the ceramic lined interior is truly amazing. Unlike a gas grill, this cooks from every direction instead of just underneath. It makes amazing stone fired pizza (with a 12 inch pizza stone. Not included), smokes, a wicked rack of ribs, and will make your chicken or steak the talk of the neighborhood. A couple of warnings: never use charcoal, briquettes, or lighter fluid with a ceramic grill. Petroleum base products are not good for this grill and will penetrate the ceramic and cause your food to taste bad. Use natural charcoal like King Oak and natural fire starters to get it going. Also, be sure to look up how to season your grill before first use. There are plenty of videos on YouTube about this. This isn’t a light grill. I couldn’t lift the pallet it came in. I ended up having to open the box in my driveway and take it out piece by piece. Even then, the main body of the grill. weighs about 70 pounds. Get someone to help you carry this because you don’t want to drop it. The ceramics inside will break. Be sure to inspect your grill carefully for hairline cracks that happen in shipping. Mine came through perfectly, but there have been horror stories of small cracks that go undetected until winter when they get water in there and expand. The stand has two shelves, one on either side. If you lift up on the shelf, you can fold it down for storage. I didn’t notice this at first, but the cover fits much better when you fold down the sides. Kamado is easily the same quality as Green Egg grills. I might be biased, but I think the Kamado are a better bang for your buck. If you’re looking for a serious grill in a compact size look no further. ... show more

Made Me a Believer
Style: Grill + Cart + Cover
This Kamado Joe Jr. grill bundle comes with everything you need to set up your Kamado grill in style. Unpacking all the boxes took almost as much time as it did to put the stand together, as just about every individual piece of the stand comes in its own box. Speaking of boxes, the whole bundle arrives in a big wood paneled box that is quite heavy, and while I managed to get it into my house by myself, some smaller or less fit individuals might have a hard time with it. No worries! Just disassemble the bundle where ever the delivery person left it, but make sure you take really good care moving the ceramic chamber. My grill came perfectly adjusted, with no tightening or final alignment necessary with the cover and bands. Once I had the base put together, it fit right in with minimal effort, as the felt pads on the legs get it lined up straight, and then still provides the ability to turn it left or right, so you can center the chamber to your liking. The fold up/down side tables are really convenient, and the included cover will fit the unit when the tables ends are in the down position, so you don't have to remove them every time you want to put the cover on. Now, for cooking . . . low and slow baby! This unit works just as good as the other color brand, and I found getting it to the right temperature to be fairly straight forward. The adjustable vent top allows for more control than I expected, and closing off the bottom and the top, gets some really good smoking action going on inside. Our first try was bone-in BBQ chicken. Delish! The next go was slow-cooked brisket. Yum! Now we're going for ribs next weekend, if the weather cooperates. Five Star Grill Bundle for True Smoking Goodness ... show more

Solid in Every Way
Style: Grill + Cart + Cover
If I had to choose one word to describe this grill, it would be solid. I’ve seen these around and always wondered how a grill could possibly be worth this much. One quick touch and you’ll understand why. The quality is second-to-none. Everything feels heavy-duty and extremely well made. Take your time putting this thing together because it is HEAVY. The added cart and cover are great additions and really complete the grill. The only reason I can see calling this “portable” is because it has wheels. It’s way too heavy for me to imagine taking it from the house to a campsite or a friend’s house. But honestly, that just speaks to the quality, design, and construction. It’s expensive, but you definitely get what you pay for. This thing is fabulous. ... show more
