  • The Gorillapod does it's JOB.
Size: Leg Only Style: GorillaPod Focus Stand
I use the Gorillapod Focus GP8 with my Battery-Packed 5D and 17-40L Lens and 30D mounted with a 50mm 1.4 lens. First off, the Battery-Packed 5D is (sadly) a bit too heavy for the GP8 in that the legs start to sag due to the tremendous amount of weight from the 5D. Not a big deal. I've learned how to take advantage of the Gorillapod's flexibility. If you shape the legs like it was a walking monster octopus (minus 4 legs)(bend (from top to bottom) at ball #5 and ball #7 on all 3 legs) the Gorillapod seems to be able to handle and maintain the weight very nicely. Absolutely no problem with my 30D mounted onto the GP8. I'm also using Joby's BH1 Ball Head which is an excellent addition to my set-up. It allows easy and convenient mounting and off-mounting of my cameras from the Gorillapod. - Buy a second Quick Release Replacement Clip if you're using more than one camera. At first, the Gorillapod's legs are stiff and a bit hard to position/maneuver but after it loosened up with use, it seems to flex and shape very easily. It's light, compact and easy to carry around vs having to carry around my manfrotto tripod. All in all, I'm very happy with my purchase and recommend the Gorillapod Focus GP8 to anyone looking for an inexpensive, portable, durable, flexible and compact tripod. • Beats SLR Zoom Hands Down
Size: GorillaPod Kit Style: GorillaPod Focus Kit
I was given the SLR zoom as a gift, and it did not work with my camera lens combos. I have a Canon EOS 50D 15.1 MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only) and several lenses with the heaviest being my Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras. The SLR zoom just could not hold it well. This pod resolves that problem. The ballhead is sturdy and locks positively. This is not a small Gorillapod, this is relatively heavy but I believe the offset in it's holding strength makes the weight worthwhile. Many times you can substitute weight for strength, but that comes at a price. There is a significant difference in cost from the SLR Zoom to this model but it is well worth it, the SLR is largely plastic, this one is mostly metal. For those who are looking for a first tripod, DO NOT buy this tripod thinking it will replace a full-size model. This is one I bought to keep in my bag for those times I do not want to lug around the weight and size of a full sized model. This one will be with me at all times and will help me for those shots I was not planning. When I go out to get a shot on purpose, or when I can justify the extra hassle associated with a full sized, I will have my Manfrotto full sized rig. Overall, as a second, or even third, tripod, I would highly recommend. Very well built, very sturdy, looks nice, and packs easily. ... show more

  • My new trusty travel companion
Size: Leg Only Style: GorillaPod Focus Stand
I've found this tripod to be a great substitute for a full size regular tripod when on space/weight constrained travels. It's light enough and small enough that I can carry it with my mirrorless camera and small-ish backpack on a daily basis. The legs are quite strong and can easily support my Fuji X-T1 with a prime lens while upright (I don't have a heavy zoom lens yet, so can't comment). Of course, where it really shines is if you can wrap the legs around a tree branch or a column or a car door or a fence etc. Pros: Light, compact, affordable and versatile. Cons: Very short - it's handicapped without a structure to wrap around, can be shaky if you touch it to change camera settings (if you are depending on merging a bunch of photos, don't touch the camera in between exposures). ... show more

  • Well Worth the Price
Size: Leg Only Style: GorillaPod Focus Stand
I never thought it would seem necessary to take the time to write a review of a tripod; obviously, the Gorillapod has proven me wrong. The strength combined with versatility makes this product essential to any serious photographer/cinematographer. For the past six months, I've been editor/producer of an extremely low-budget college film. Since my purchase of the Gorillapod, I've seen it's ability to quickly solve issues and reduce the price of catching difficult shots. My friend (writer and director), likes to shoot each scene at every angle possible (which is great for an editor). The other day we were shooting one of the major confrontations in the film, and thought we shoot get a high-angle shot. Filming this angle seemed impossible until I ended up climbing a tree and wrapping the arms around one of the branches. I'd had the Gorillapod long enough to not feel the terror of relying on one item to hold the weight of expensive equipment. However, I knew as I wrapped the arms around the branch that it's apparence is misleading. The director has a Focus himself now, and uses it in ways I've never thought of (such as clinging two arms over each side of the shoulder and using the fourth arm as a grip eliminates the need for a steady-cam). I also am taking a photography course, and my interest in night photography has made this product vital to getting shots requiring long exposures. Overall, the Gorillapod Focus has endless possibilities, and is an essential addition to anyones photographic arsenal. I highly recommend purchasing one, even if it cuts into a tight budget; it's advantages make the price more than fair. ... show more
