Too narrow and chrome plated causes them to slip out. The add says 1/2" diameter but they are no more than 7/16 and the plastic handles slip off as well. Going to hd to get some half inch steel rod instead.

Sometimes the cable on my shops garage door gets pulled out of wack and I need to release the spring slightly so I can route the fable to where it is supposed to be. These make that whole process about a million times easier, I think I used to do it with channel lock pliers and it was a pain.

Installing a garage door torsion spring can be very dangerous if you do not have the right tools. Thankfully the right tools are just two appropriately sized rods that are very sturdy, and a wrench to tighten the set screw. These winding rods fit my garage door torsion spring perfectly and I got plenty of torque from them. The rubber handles are nice, however I was a little disappointed at how they can slide off. If I was using these every day as an installer I could see how the rubber handles would work their way off and be a safety concern. Since I only used these once and it will probably be several years before I have to use them again it isn't a problem for me. Overall I am happy with these and glad that I bought them.

Supposed to be 1/2 inch diameter. Is actually 7/16 inch diameter. So as you can imagine they slip around in the spring hole creating an unsafe condition. I am returning them as they are not as described. The handles are nice, too bad they cheapened out on the actual winding rod. Anything less than 1/2 inch is too thin for this job anyway and will most likely warp or bend. I now read from others that they experienced bending.

In the past I have installed or adjusted a several garage doors and have always struggled with tensioning the torsion springs. I make due with a ratchet extension and some other rod to do the winding. In doing so I am always a rather nervous as the springs get tighter and tighter waiting for one of my make shift tools to let go. That being said I wish I had found this set years ago! Its not something I use very often but its certainly is the right tool for the job when it comes to tensioning those torsion springs. For of all they fit the holes the way they are suppose to, offering a solid purchase that is less likely to accidentally slip. Then they are long enough to give you the leverage to turn the springs in a controlled manner. I ordered these because I had an end pulley slip on one of my garage doors and needed to readjust the tension to get the door to hang evenly and close properly with the automatic closer. What a difference they made for getting the job done safely and easily. If you are a DIY type of person planning to install your own garage door, or a carpenter who does them on occasion then do yourself a favor and get this set. Its worth it for the piece of mind and safety even if you are only installing a single door.
