  • Jet is quality
This belt sander works great. I've used it for sanding on some knives and used leather belt for polishing edges which is great. Wish it had additional adjustment for sanding belt and louder than expected but overall works great and quality built tool.

  • Worked great for a few months
I used this belt sander for about 5 months or so without problem, I would even say it was great while it was running! I only used it for short durations on weekends, I am a hobbyist knife maker. There are little issues but they were easily resolved with a little elbow grease and ingenuity. The last straw was tonight when I was sanding some red oak, I was applying some pressure to hog through the wood, not overly much pressure mind you, and suddenly the motor starts letting out this horrible grinding sound. I immediately turned it off and disassembled the main parts to see if something came loose or maybe broke. Everything looked fine so I put it back together, plugged it back in and turned it on. It ran for about 20 seconds, still making the noise, before it tripped the gfci. I have no idea what happened but figured the motor more than likely crapped out. I went to look into buying a replacement motor off the JET website just in case and see that the motor ALONE costs more than the whole unit! I am filing a complaint with the warranty department but I am not very hopeful they will come through on this one and I most certainly will not be buying a replacement motor at $546. I will rethink my review if they honor the warranty (supposedly 5 years on woodworking gear) but until that time I think I will refrain from getting anymore JET tools and would advise others think deeply about buying this tool in particular. ... show more

  • Excellent Finish and Runs Smoothly.
The Jet 1 x 24 inch belt/ 8 inch disc sander is a well-made machine. Compared to Rikon, available for about 100 dollars less, it is fabulous. I know because I’ve been trying to send back a Rikon belt /disc sander I purchased, mainly because it is defective. See my review of the Rikon for details. The Jet has well machined mating surfaces on the cast iron sections, and the cast iron parts are not rough. Jet took the time to smooth out the surface of the cast parts. Not Rikon. Both discs are aluminum and are 8 inches and both have plastic guards over the disc and the belt sanders; however, the Jet has a tilt back top on the belt guard that allows the top idler-wheel to be used on inside circles. The Jet uses thicker plastic around the guards. And, most important, the Jet dust collector ports are sized for a shop vac (small hose). The Rikon vacuum ports fit nothing American made for dust collection. The Jet went together in 30 minutes, including taking it out of the box. The Rikon took me four hours to assemble and it was a nightmare all the way. The Jet runs much quieter than the Rikon, and it vibrates less. Much less. Plus, the Jet is an Amazon Prime unit. This means it is backed by Amazon itself and that is worth something – well over 200 dollars it seems. The Rikon is not a Prime product; thus, if you encounter problems you must deal with the retailer and Rikon. I had trouble with both. If you need a part, or if the machine arrives damaged, Amazon Prime will respond at once. I know because I’ve used them numerous times. If there are difficulties and it isn’t Amazon Prime, stand by for problems. Unfortunately, both machines use handles to loosen the tables, but the Rikon uses the handles on both tables and Jet only uses a handle adjustment for the belt table. The disc table is held by two allen head bolts, one on each end of the table. I mention this because the handles, even on the Jet, are tough to turn. They have a kind of button on top that you push down as you pull the handle up to avoid catching the threads. Then you push the handle down onto the threads and turn the bolt to loosen or tighten the table. The handle on the Jet is a bit better than the Rikon, but not much. Both have a tendency to break loose quickly and smash your knuckles. I’ve skinned my knuckles on them both. In my opinion, these handles do not work. Is the better fit and finish, the quieter and smoother running, and Amazon Prime, worth an extra 100? You bet it is. Plus, I would have saved myself over 3 ½ hours of struggle in a 100-degree garage (heat wave here in northern Nevada). Will the Jet outlast other machines in the same category? I think it will. If you are struggling with paying the extra money for the Jet, don’t worry. You will get your money’s worth in a dozen different ways. AD2 ... show more

  • Good all-around sander
It was a little hokey to put together (you need three hands) but it performs well and is a good all-around sander. Yeah it's a pain you have to dismantle half of it to replace the rotary sanding disk but that's not that unusual. The power switch is a little wimpy, but that all aside it's a nice, solid unit and I have no complaints on its usability. ... show more

  • 2nd try was Successful
Turned it on the first time and it worked. Turned it on a second time and the motor hummed, but no movement. I called Jet customer service number from the manual and actually did talk to a person. A new start capacitor was sent to me promptly. I replace the capacitor, but same result. I again talked to customer service, but they had no recommended fix so I sent it back and ordered another. The replacement is operating fine, but the on/off switch is coming out of the metal box it is mounted in. Without disassembling the switch and box enclosure, the fix is not obvious, but the switch works OK, so I will live with it. Quality control is obviously a problem. From an operating perspective, the product works well and the frame is certainly robust. Rikon is now selling a product that looks nearly identical for $200.00 less that might be worth checking out. I cannot give the product more than two stars, but customer service probably did the best it could with the information I could provide. ... show more

  • So far so good.
Easy to set up and adjust. I've only used it a few times but everything works properly and seems of good quality. The only thing that is a bit troublesome is mounting the sanding disc. The table, both plastic covers and the disc must all be removed to change the disc. Maybe this is normal for all machines, but it is a PITA. I can see I'll be using the belt 99% of the time, but that is primarily why I purchased it. ... show more

  • Good sander but minor QA issues and incorrect/misleading specifications listed by Amazon
I bought this sander to assist me with final sanding for wooden gears I was making for a clock. I bought this model based on my good experiences with Jet tools in the past. The packaging for the sander is adequate and setup was well documented and straightforward. I was up and running with the sander in around 30 minutes and it performes just as well as I expected it would. The belt tracked fine without having to make any adjustments. I do have a couple of quality control issues though. Most importantly, the miter gauge is a loose fit in the table slots and there is no way to make an adjustment for a better fit. It was loose enough that I would never consider using it in a situation where I needed to have anthing perfectly square. But that said, I don't know any woodworkers that rely on factory provided miter gauges for precise work. The one provided with most tools leave a lot to be desired. The paint work on the sander body was fine but was sloppy and inconstent on the tables. On the milled faces and in the slots there was still pea sized drops of white paint and on the side of one table the paint was so thin you could tell there was no primer coat and could see the casting through the "whitewash" coat of paint that was there. If you are basing your purchase of this sander on the features stated on the Amazon website be aware of a couple of points: 1.The Amazon technical specs state "Power take off, allows for mounting an optional flex shaft, can be used for carving, drum sanding, deburing and dozens of other jobs" There is no power take-off (PTO)which can be used with a flexible shaft tool. There is a plastic "plug" that covers an opening which gives access to the end of the drive shaft. There are internal threads in the end of the drive shaft which in theory I suppose you could screw in something but the owners manual makes no reference of there being a PTO for this machine, it does not show use of a drum sander or flexible shaft in its manual where they show diagrams of standard sanding operations nor does Jet offer an "optional flex shaft". I even called the technical service department at Walter Meier (the parent company of Jet)and I was told that there was no PTO on the sander. The technical representative I spoke to did not recommend attaching anything onto the shaft using the internal threads. I would also be concerned about the bearing life on that shaft if you were to attach a drum sander to it and apply any lateral pressure. 2. Another misleading statment in the technical description for the saw states it has a "deluxe" miter gauge. There is nothing about this miter gauge that is deluxe. It's about the quality would you would expect to find with a benchtop tool. The slot size for the bar is only 5/8 wide instead of the standard 3/4". This means that your after-market miter gauge won't fit. And as I mentioned above the fit in the slot was loose and there was not adjustment for making it tighter. If I could give two ratings for this sander I woudld give the sander 4 stars out of 5 with the deduction caused by only fair fit and finish on some parts and I would give Amazon 1 star out of 5 for being misleading for inaccurate descriptions of the sander features. ... show more

  • Second one as bad as the first one.
I purchased this grinder in January 2021 and it worked fine for a few days before it started to sound like a "jet" engine preparing for take off. It sounded like the bearings went out on the main pulley. I received the second one within a few days of my return and sent the old (new) one back. The window for the return for the second one they sent me closed 18 days ago and this one is now sounding like the last one. So I got about 60 days of very sporadic use out of it before it failed. I certainly expected more out of a piece of equipment that costs well over $400 ... show more
