After much research in 2023, concluded that this was the JBL speaker to get based on features, comparative prices, quality, etc. During this reviewer's research, determined that this speaker has more features than some of the more modern releases from JBL. Purchased refurbished and out of the box simply needed to download and update the drivers onto an Android phone from a JBL app and the whole process was seamless. Plays in stereo with (and compliments nicely) a Flip 4 and now have stereo goodness in the kitchen and about the house. Just a total deal & love these JBL products! ... show more

    • My favorite of a half dozen Bluetooth speakers I've owned...

I received this speaker today. First, there is nothing about it that reveals that it is "refurbished" (except, perhaps, the plain brown JBL box in which its delivered). It sounds just fine. I've owned a half dozen bluetooth battery driven portable speakers. This may be the best of the lot, but there is nothing breathtaking about it. Usually, JBL has pretty zingy highs (my experience with JBL going back to 1958), but this speaker is fairly neutral. It is a fine speaker and I look forward to using it in many venues. It has more volume than the other speakers I own (or have owned) and, in that context, will be very welcome when using it as a teaching aid in classes I teach. I listen, principally, to classical music which almost never "thumps" as modern rock does -- so whether those passive bass radiators deliver anything unusual is hard to tell. Piano, violin, woodwinds, or voice all sound very natural. This is the largest and best quality bluetooth speaker I have owned. I'm not complaining a bit. It's just not breathtaking. On YouTube one reviewer lists it among the top 5 bluetooth speakers...I'd need to listen to the other 4 to know if that actually has merit. But for it's price (I don't have a B&W budget!!) I'm happy. ============ Addendum It's more impressive than originally perceived. It has a fullness of sound (enhanced by better bass response) that exceeds the other four Bluetooth speakers I own. I used it while in my hot tub last night. It didn't get wet or fall in but the volume was loud enough to get over the substantial noise of the jets on high. Construction is excellent. Upgrading starts from 4 to 5. (I'll still reserve the "breathtaking" adjective for those ridiculous $25K speakers they love in Britain.) ============= Addendum II In 1958 when consumer stereo got going I went into a specialty shop that sold "component" stereo and LP albums...only. These were popping up here and there as the world moved from the Magnavox Radio-Phonograph of the '40s and early '50s to high performance stereo gear. I auditioned speakers one afternoon with the owner. I was 14 and he was my "coach" in matters stereo. After listening to a half dozen pairs of speakers which included AR, Electro-Voice, and JBL, I decided that a pair of JBL's were my favorites and my aspiration...being way outside the price range of a 14 year old. The same characteristics which drew me to JBL in 1958 still draw me to this little speaker which is now, far and away, my favorite portable speaker of the many I've owned. ... show more

This is the speaker I always dreamed of. I am very hard on my gear. ~We hike way up into the Rockies to professionally dig crystals.~ This speaker is durable af. The woven outer shell is everything it should be, a shock-absorbent, thick protective layer. We dropped this bad boy down a ravene and idk that it even put a scratch on it. If someone took this apart and asked me to guess how thick of a protective shell it had, I'd guess at least 1/4" under that canvas material, based on how solid it feels when you shake it hard. ~We get really really really dirty. We require a lot of water to clean ourselves/gear at night.~ I argue these speakers are better water proofed than the claim jbl makes! So whether it's dumping our bottles of water over our heads for cooling down, or washing specimens in the creek, or washing at night we always are around a lot of splashing water. We also live in a lake beach community and take this on the floaties. No difference in performance after a lot of full-water-submersions. I even use this in the shower stall lol. ~We don't have a lot of battery life to spread for music.~ The speakers stayed on a full 21hrs the first use without any charging. I haven't tested it much since then as I haven't had a lot of chances for this to play continually for THAT long. We can plug in an old school aux headphone cord so we don't have to waste battery on bluetooth too! It does what it claims and more. I wish I was more of a tech expert on the audio capability but I will say it's the best speaker quality I've ever owned. I've also owned bose, and sony, those just don't have quite as much oomf or as full of a sound as the Charge. I feel like I'm hearing a lot more detailed noise data on the Charge that the other speakers that might not pick up on, maybe even bose. Enjoy! And don't be shy of the refurbished ones, that's what we got with the extended warranty. Be careful Amazon is sheisty and will raise the price of the warranty if you leave it in your cart too long. I cross checked on a different browser and amazons price was half what it had increased to while sitting in my cart, so pay for it immediately once it goes in the cart! Lol. Adventurers tips: grab the silicone case, this thing can get heavy while hiking to just hold onto for hours. It's durable, let it hang out on your pack while your hands can explore nature's secret universes. It can handle the jostling! ... show more
