This is my first overlocker / serger. I had to read the manual to get the stitch tension dialed in but after that, it has been accurate and reliable. My first projects were edging fleece blankets and flannel cloths, which the machine handled equally well without further adjustments. I have made a pair of flannel PJ shorts constructed mostly with this machine (minus hems and waistband). The machine comes pre-threaded with sample spools of white thread. Tie on the new thread and gently PULL through. If you try to sew with the knots, the thread will snap. Rethreading this machine is complicated and frustrating. The instructions are not clear as to where to thread under the machine for lower looper and you need to watch a video to understand it. Product comes with DVD instructions but who has a DVD player these days? I would like to see the video on the Janome website or YouTube instead. ... show more

I have had this machine for a week. Pros: pretty stitches, fairly quiet comparatively, light weight Cons: Threading is ridicules compared to other sergers that I have done, needle keeps bending/breaking Currently waiting on Janome to contact me with the needle issue, as I have followed all of the trouble shooting steps. In one day, I lost three needles. I do not know if I would recommend this machine yet due to the issues... Im leaning towards no. Just waiting for help to see if its something I am doing or a machine error. ... show more

This was very inexpensive in relation to other sergers. I won't be using it a lot, so it will be sufficient for my needs. My local sewing machine repair person said that Janome sergers have a much better lifespan than other brands, so I was happy to find a Janome for such a reasonable price. This is a nice little serger. It does take a while to learn to thread it, but once it is threaded, you can just feed new colors through it. It sews great.

I almost did not buy this serger. The option of being able to return it sold me on giving it a test run. I am very happy with the purchase. It is a good value for the price. The packaging is very good for shipping safely. The instruction manual is very good. A first time serger owner can read it and follow the instructions and become very confident in a short amount of time. I would suggest reading it cover to cover before operating the serger, even if you are an experienced serger operator. The serger is no harder to thread than any other manual threading serger. You definitely need a threader for the lower looper. The diagrams on the machine are very helpful checking that you thread correctly. I found the serger very user friendly when switching to a rolled hem, adjusting tensions and the differential feed. This was my first serger and the one thing I was afraid of was the threading. Everyone talks about how difficult and time consuming they are to thread. I watched a 5 minute YouTube video and had this threaded in no time. Works great and feels very sturdy.
