  • A solid, affordable Android based player with great sound processing and decent battery life
Color: Sky Blue
I fell in love with it after only a few hours. This is my fourth Fiio player and I mostly knew what to expect when I purchased it. For the most part I am very satisfied with the JM21. My disappointment is with documentation and support from Fiio (more on that at the end of the review). The size and weight of the JM21 feels comfortable. It feels solid like my other Fiio players (X1, X3, and X5). Those players have held up to heavy usage and survived getting dropped too many times and all of them are still functional. I can't in all honestly say that the JM21 is easy to get used to and easy to use because I have used a Fiio Android based player before and find very few differences with the old interface. That said, I didn't have trouble adjusting to the old interface so I don't see most people who are used to android devices having much trouble. I have never used the iOS so I can't advise on the difficulty for those who are not used to Android devices. I like that it came with at least a silicone case and a pre-installed screen protector. I ordered a second protector but passed on a better case. I had the leather case for my X5 but found that it made access to the edges of the screen difficult without a stylus. The technical details of the audio processing capabilities are a bit much for a review but I can tell a definite difference in audio quality when comparing the JM21 to that quality of music on my phone or on the no-name player I have been using. I have tested it with JBL 770 Live headphones connected with Bluetooth and with Status CB-1 headphones connected with a cable. An added bonus is that as unlike when listening on a phone I don't have to worry about the music cutting out if a text or call comes in. I have mostly been satisfied with the battery life. I recently listened to an 8 1/2 hour audiobook on the Audible app and maybe an hour of music using the Fiio app (without using a headphone amp). I used wired headphones for the music and the Bluetooth connection for the audiobook. Wi-Fi was only turned on long enough to download the book. At the time I started listening the battery had a 100% charge. After about 9 1/2 hours of use and sitting idle overnight there was still 34% battery power left. For some reason the player dropped to 9% over the next 11 hours while it was sitting idle. Hopefully turning on battery saver and using the "Enter Sleep" app that is pre-installed will help with that. I do not have the feature that turns the player off after a certain time enabled but will do so if necessary. The JM21 has Android 13 (customized) installed and uses the Google Play Store as well as Fiio's app store. This opens up options to use most any software you want. I use my player for listening to audiobooks and podcasts in addition to using it for music and have been able to install my favorite podcast app, a player for local audiobook files. The Audible app was preinstalled. The JM21 does have a micro SD port for expandable memory (up to 2TB). Even if I wasn't concerned with audio quality finding a modern phone or with enough storage to keep my music on it isn't possible. I have more than 400GB of music in FLAC format and over 100GB of music purchased from services that don't offer lossless files. iPhones and the newer Galaxy phones don't have the capability to expand storage with a memory card. I listen to a lot of music digitized from old albums or from independent artists that are not available on any streaming service so the extra storage is a must. Even if all of it was available streaming there is always going to be a time when Wi-Fi isn't available. I have heard the argument that I don't need carry all of that with me but if I get the urge to hear a song I don't want to have to wait to be able to move it from my computer to be able to listen to it so the storage is a must for me. I gave the player a 5 star rating only because 4 1/2 wasn't possible and I feel it is too good for a 4 star rating. My reason for wanting to give it 4.5 is not because of dissatisfaction with either hardware or software but for lack of support from Fiio. There is no manual available for the JM21 at this time. Yes, it ships with a quick start guide and there is a FAQ on Fiio's web site but they don't list all of the features. I needed to find a way to lock some of the side buttons when the screen is off. I have not been able to find how to do that in any available documentation. I finally stumbled across how to do it when looking for something else in the settings. As soon as I got the JM21 I sent a request to Fiio asking for an actual manual and got a reply that gave links to the quick start guide, the FAQ, firmware download, two different trouble solutions, and an apology for being slow because of a higher than normal volume of help requests. This also happened when I contacted support for a problem with my X5 player about six years ago so if you purchase this be aware that you will need to rely on third party information for anything that is not in the in the FAQ or quick start guide. The quality of the player itself, however, makes the lack of direct support and information from Fiio worth the trouble. If you are looking for an affordable portable player with sound that is equal to that of the high end, expensive players and better than you'll get from any phone give the JM21 a try. It's not perfect but I doubt you will be disappointed. ... show more

  • Received 4GB/64GB Version, Very happy with performance.
Color: Sky Blue
Great little DAC, it really does sound better than my phone. I'm not a huge audiophile, but wanted to try a "better" device for listening to audio, and to get away from the constant notifications on my phone. This JM21 does the job, and does it extremely well. When I started looking at these, the prices were all over the place until you get to Hi-Res DAC part, and then you start to see that pricing starts around 150 and up depending on sales. I settled between this and a couple others in the same range, but quite frankly, wanted it overnight. This one won that contest, and I was surprised that my main concern was a non issue. On the page, the JM21 lists at 3GB/32GB, but there are other versions out there with 4GB. It turns out, this is one of those 4GB Versions, despite what the description states. Very quick and easy to setup, with Android limited, but ready to go. You can install whatever you like, so no worries there, and with the 4GB version, it seems to handle video okay, although I wouldn't want to watch on the tiny screen, and treat this as an audio only device. Speaking of which, it has a handy audio only mode which cuts out the constant running of android and just focuses the device on the chosen music/audio app. You can always hop right back to android mode, but the mode selection is pretty nice. Bluetooth connectivity works well, tested with a few different headsets. I have LDAC headphones from Baseus (XH1), and they work flawlessly with great sound. They are better headphones out there, but wanted to talk about medium range ones that people tend to buy the most of on Amazon in the form of Bluetooth/ANC/Wireless etc. There is a difference in sound quality with headphones between phone and the JM21, and it is noticeable. Startup was quick and easy. Sign into a google account and download whatever apps you want to use from the Play Store. Moving files was easy as well. Hooking up to wifi and Bluetooth were simple and easy. If you've used an android phone, this is not complicated. At all. Looks great with the two tone blue/silver. And getting the 4gb version was a nice bonus, as I was prepared to get 3gb version. Pretty happy with these. ... show more

  • Price to Performance, it really can't be best.
Color: Sky Blue
🟢 = Can't really improve on this budget 🟡 = They could have made it better 🔴 = Its a compromise that will annoy you 🟢Sound quality (through wired headsets) and features, the JM21 punches above its weight class making it a fantastic budget option that competes with DAP options twice it's price. 🟢Sound quality (Through Bluetooth connections) is about on par with just about anything else out there with Bluetooth. If Bluetooth is your preferred way to listen to music, then you won't get any better or any worse sound quality than if you used your phone. Spending more on a DAP will not get you better sound quality through Bluetooth. So JM21 is about as good as it gets in this regard 🟢The processor is above and beyond anything else in this price range. Antutu score of 280,000 🟡RAM is a little low. Even when there's not much going in the background, there are times here and there where it's just frozen and not registering Taps for 10-20 seconds. This can also be a problem in the keyboard when you're trying to use the keyboard to find/type something, but the board is frozen 🟢Storage speed is adequate. It can write about 60MB/s on average, and likely can write at the speed your SD card is advertised to write at (My SD in the JM21 writes 80MB/s average.) 🟢Wifi speeds seem to average at 20MB/s. Managed to download a 1GB Album/soundtrack in about 45 seconds. 🟡 Screen is very adequate visually, but of very low quality. Visually, it's fine. However it's 720p, doesn't get very bright. Not great viewing angles. Pictures and images can be sharp, but color isn't the most vivid. Due to the size and unique dimensions of the screen, mobile apps and web pages can look very awkward. 🔴Dead pixels are rampant, I counted 16 on my JM21. I kept it in dark mode so I didn't notice, but I was eventually made aware of them. And surprised at how many there were. 🔴 Some quality of life features missing. There is no gyroscope, so there are no flipping your device side-ways to enter landscape. There are no microphones, so even being android, you can't use any voice features. Able to use the mic on your keyboard to type for you on the tiny screen would have been appreciated. There is no light sensor for automatic brightness. 🟢 Advantage of 720p screen makes Wifi-Direct video casting to a bigger screen perform pretty well latency-wise on low quality TVs with slow processors like a Roku TV. 🟡 Not physically durable. I'm scared to drop this thing. Its plastic, and the Glass is just glass. The case and protection options are just awful. The case it comes with is not adequate. 🟢 Light and easy to hold. Fits well into a shirt pocket. 🟡 Battery life could be better. It gets me through a day so daily charging is mandatory. ... show more

  • Balance port broke after 3 months!
Color: Black
I bought this DAP with some pretty low expectations for a $180 DAP, but it was decently great up until it broke. The build quality is decent, but don't expect it to be a tank since the material is all plastic. There is a matte finish that's applied to the plastic and that started flaking off about 2 months after I started using it. The sound quality and power output is phenomenal; it drives my Aful Explorers well at only half volume on the 3.5mm output. The processor isn't the fastest, but it gets the job done. The only concern with battery life is that it will plummet if you have wifi on all the time. The firmware kills the wifi if no app is actively using it in the background, but you'll wanna kill the app anyway if you're not using it. Now here's the bad news. Just recently, the 4.4mm balanced port completely stopped working. Both the cable and the IEM are fine; they work on my DAC just fine. The settings never changed and they had worked previously. However, when I try to play music, there's no output, save for the slight popping sounds it makes every now and then. I'm very disappointed in this since I was changing over to 4.4mm for durability during every day listening and now it's essentially moot. This should not be happening whatsoever, even on a more budget DAP such as this. ... show more

  • Very Satisfied Very Satisfied
Color: Black
After 10 years of monthly streaming subscriptions, I realized I had nothing to show for it, so I went looking for a standalone device to own my library again. Being new to the DAP and audiophile world, I did a lot of research and quickly learned that DAPs usually do one thing well which is digital audio conversion—while the OS and hardware are often something you just pick your poison with. As a newcomer to the DAP world, here’s my take on this FiiO player: The Interface: I was worried about it being Android based (I’ve seen some bad, laggy cheap phones) but it’s actually a huge plus for a beginner because it’s familiar and easy to navigate using a touchscreen. Plus, you can switch to a "Pure" mode to turn it into just a digital player without all the tech distractions. The Tech: It has both 3.5mm and 4.4mm outputs, LDAC support, and handles album art/lyrics that it can pull from the web (absolutely love this because my iTunes music didn’t move over with album art). Super easy to create playlists. Easy button to scan sd card for new music. Tons of other features too in the settings. I found the full manual online then uploaded the PDF of the manual to NotebookLM…trust me, it makes troubleshooting and getting over the learning curve way faster than reading through a 40 page manual. Music Experience: Downloading my Qobuz library was seamless. The chrome browser is also essential because it lets you buy music directly from websites, bypassing the Apple/Google App Stores tax that blocks digital music purchases in-app. I do hear a sound upgrade from streaming (definitely more immersive sound) but obviously results are only as good as your weakest link whether that’s the wired connection or the headset or the DAC. I like the dedicated fiiO player app, I find it very intuitive to use. It’s been fairly easy to download music via Qobuz app on this DAP or move iTunes music to the sd card from my MacBook. Only hiccups I had was things that are not the fault of the player, most of my issues have been with Apple products like I had to reformat my SD card because my MacBook didn’t like the format (this DAP could read any format fine). Getting my iTunes music in general was hard because Apple wants to keep everything in their ecosystem. Also had issues with not being able to buy music on certain apps but like I said earlier that has to do with them trying to avoid paying Apple Store or Play store so I’ve had to buy on a browser then download from the apps. Battery Life: Active use in Android mode: I got about 10% drain per hour. In the “pure” music player only mode it drains closer to standby. Standby: Amazing. Only 2% drain over 8 hours. Charging: Went from 8% to 80% in under an hour while I was using it. That was all without battery saver on. On battery saver I get a lot more run time and haven’t had any problems with Bluetooth connection (I don’t stream, only playback from the SD card). Regardless I would say to just keep it plugged in for charging as much as possible or turn it off when not in use because it will die on you eventually. Mine mostly lives in my car but on rare occasions where I’m out and about with it I carry a mobile charger for it Etc: it’s as wide as my iPhone 16 Pro but not as tall. There’s *not* a lot of accessories like cases and stuff for it on Amazon but luckily it comes with a basic case and screen protector already applied. Overall I’m very happy with this DAP. I feel like for the price I got all the basic entry level stuff a newcomer would want plus extras that will future proof my purchase. Extremely happy that I got an android based player because it reduced the learning curve significantly and provides a lot more features and settings to tinker with. ... show more

  • Excellent HiFi player with a few SW bugs
Color: Sky Blue
Great HiFi player with a few caveats. After two weeks of fairly extensive use I am pretty familiar with the good and not so good. On the good side, fidelity on LDAC files is amazing even through normal AAC bluetooth connections. It seems to do a better end-to-end job than my Galaxy 23 or PC in getting music out with really low distortion (particularly found in high dynamic string sections). I use Media Monkey to manage a library of about 35K tracks and I was able to load and use my full 90 Gb library on a 128 Gb microSD without issue. Unbalanced output capable of fairly high levels. Did not check balanced outputs yet. I like the organization keeping audio controls on one side and power/device controls on the other. Very clean and easy to use. Screen is super clear and I find even small print quite legible. Battery life is excellent - easily making the 12 hours quoted. On the not so good - the APTX bluetooth connection does not seem to work with the one set of earbuds that have that capability; it does connect but when starting music it abruptly terminates the connection, so for any reasonable operation I have to use AAC. As to whether this is due to the Bose earbuds or this unit is impossible to determine at this point; both are Snapdragon certified so it is hard to understand. Also there are times (usually on first start up) that it will only play the first 8 seconds of the track then go quiet (while player continues to play). Skipping to next track gives the same behavior. If I then go back a track the playback usually becomes normal. Another odd stack behavior can occur with a pulsed dropout or with 2X or 4X normal speed playback. I don't yet know what the exact sequence is that causes this but they can be cleared by stopping the track and restarting. Thankfully this is a rare occurrance. Unfortunately the basic Android 13 functionality seems to not work as expected. Setting the sleep or power down to 10 minutes doesn't work when I set the sleep timer for the music. Once the music stops my Galaxy phone will go to sleep but this unit will not - it is still very much on when I get up in the morning. I have some other trials that may sidestep this issue, Overall a 4+ unit with excellent fidelity and some minor software bugs which hopefully will be corrected in future releases of the brand new unit. UPDATE: After buying a new APTx dongle for my stereo I find that the player automatically connects correctly, which indicates the problem is with my Bose earbuds not the player! Given that correction I increase my rating back to 5 star!! ... show more

  • Sound quality not as good as reviews suggest
Color: Black
***update*** After more listening with more headphones, I can say that: 1) This DAP pairs well with the Fiio FT1 headphones with balanced cable. It drives them with very authoritative bass, and the FT1 lacks the resolution to reveal the DAPs flaws, although they are a very good headphone for a closed back at this price. If you like your FT1, you'll probably really like this DAP with them. 2) Out of all my other headphones, there is only one other pair where I find this DAP to sound pretty good with, and that is the Hifiman Edition XS. While the XS is capable of more with a better amp, this pairing is quite good for the price range. The DAP sounds less cold and dead with this headphone, and the DAP drives them better than it does the Sundara open backs. ***original review*** I am disappointed in the sound quality, despite the features and output power for the price point. I suspect that the positive reviews as far as sound quality are either inexperienced ears or shills or some combination of the two. I find this item to have the same undesirable sonic characteristics as past Fiio products that ive owned (M17, R9) - thin, brittle, glassy, one-dimensional, lacking in warmth and depth, and generally sounding deadend and dampened. And, there is an annoying tizziniess in the upper treble. (NOTE: more upper treble does NOT equal more detail!) I had high hopes for this device, because I have been VERY pleased with the sound of very recent Fiio offerings (Warmer R2R DAC, DM13 CD player) and pleased with the Snowsky Mini and K11 R2R at their price points, and i was hoping this would follow in the footsteps of those great new Fiio products in terms of sonics. Unfortunately that is not the case. My purpose in purchasing this was to have a satisfactory sounding portable capable of driving Sundaras for outdoor exercise situations where I didnt want to risk damaging my more expensive DAPs and headphones. While it drives the Sundara reasonably well, im not happy with the sound. Regardless of what headphones I paired this item with (Sundara open, HD660S &S2, HE1000SE, PortaPro, KPH-30i, everything except the Koss models run via 4.4mm balanced) this player sounded notably inferior and much less engaging than my other portable DAPs with similar power output (Cayin N3 Pro). Granted, the N3 Pro is 3 times the price, but it has similar power output specs and similar grade DAC chips, so the FIIO shouldn't have underperformed by this margin. I actually think Fiio's $50 Snowsky Echo Mino sounds better, albeit less powerful. And, it gets hot quick! After running for only a few minutes scanning 10000 songs into library from SD card and downloading firmware update, it got concerningly warm. The good- the interface is snappy without lag, there is a non-oversampling filter that improves the sonics over the other filter options, BT supports hi-res codecs, screen looks good, balanced line out, balanced HP out with class-leading power, works well as a transport for BT transmission, TF card expandability, ability to load 3rd party apps such as UAPP, great bang-for-the-buck,.compact and thin. But the most important quality for a music player is sound quality IMO, and this doesn't meet expectations in that regard. 3 stars for power and features and snappy interface for the price. Would have been 4 or 5 stars for the $ if it sounded as good as the DM13 or K11 R2R. It does deliver a lot of capabilities at the price, and it is better than something like an iPad Touch at a lower cost. And, if youre not using higher end headphones than a PortaPro or KPH30i, the sound is just fine and plenty robust. So there is a market segment for whom I would recommend this product. Im going to keep it as a beater that can drive my planars. And, with LDAC and Apt-X HD, it is great as a source for Bluetooth headphones. Works well with my Ananda BT R2R and my Hifiman Bluemini, and since the onboard DAC and amp are not in use when transmitting Bluetooth, the device's sonic limitations dont come into play in this use case. ... show more

  • Great all around Digital Audio Player
Color: Sky Blue
I have tried a few different Digital Audio Players before and the JM21 by far meets my needs comparatively. There are plenty of positives and a couple negatives more me. Over all, I highly recommend this device. Positives: 1. Size/Weight is pretty solid for transport being not too small or too big and on the lighter side. 2. Easy expandable storage with micro sd card up to 2tb 3. Sound quality and power are adequate and nice for the price point. 4. Android 13 so it's pretty snappy and there is no issue putting your music on the device 5. Great Bluetooth with solid range creating strong connections 5. WiFi for easy firmware updates and for streaming if you need such a thing Negatives: 1. The biggest negative is the battery life. I believe they state it will have approx 12 hours depending on use case. Which really isn't horrible and is mostly accurate but I recommend turning off wifi and Bluetooth when its not needed. Lowering the brightness all the things you would do with a smartphone to conserve power. On the other side of this it charges extremely fast and for my use case I'm never going to listen to 10-12 hours off of it continuously. 2. The buttons can be easily pressed within a pocket. Ive haven't had many issues with buttons pressing by themselves via movement often but more so when I go to grab the thing. Not a big deal but a tad bit annoying at times. ... show more
