I needed to drill many 1/2 hole through 3 stacked 4x4s for a terracing project I was working on. The holes were then used to hammer 2 ft rebar stakes through the wood and into the ground. I already had a couple of long Irwin 1/2 inch drills and planned to simply use them to get through the wood. After drilling one hole I realized this was not going to be as easy as I thought. The stress on my Dewalt 20V drill was much more than I anticipated. I tried an only plug in drill that I had, but was even worse. I was going to buy a new hammer drill for $200, but really didn't want to spend that much more for this $700 project. I then read online that you should "at least use an auger bit". I was skeptical, but looked on Amazon and saw that is was just under $20 so decided to give it a try. The bit was amazing, it worked sooooo much better than the non-auger bit and went through the wood with much less effort. I had about 25 holes to drill and al long as I gave my drill a rest after 5-7 holes everything went fine and I was able to finish my project. Who knew? Augur is definitely the way to go if you are drilling through solid wood! ... show more
