I bought 4 different sizes of Irwin auger bits to use in making several-inch deep holes in narrow vases made on my lathe. Unfortunately, the ½-inch auger was slightly bent, which left the drill structure out of round, and thus the business end was wobbly and unusable for fine drilling work. The little cutting slot that begins the helix gets gummed up with wood Might be fine for blowing holes through kiln dried lumber, but with wet pressure treated boards it gets about 2" deep before stopping Then you need to use a utility knife to clean all that out. If the bit is really hot, the PTL stuff is like glued in there. Tough to get out. I only bought it because my paddle bits are only 6" long and I'm going through 7" of wood. Ultimately, I did most of the hole with a plain dumb drill bit, then finished the last inch with this cutter, cleaning it out after every hole. Now that this project is done, I'm pitching it.
