  • Love it!
I never knew I've been missing such an important tool. For the longest time I've dismissed these power probes as nothing more than a gimmick not fully realizing how they work. Prior to this using multimeter was my go to, but this tool makes things so much easier and quicker to diagnose that it's a whole new category in itself. I bought this version because it has 3/5/12V options to send power, while others only did the 12V. To me that seemed important because many sensors/solenoids, run on lower voltage than 12V and you wouldn't want to fry them, or get misleading results from sending the wrong voltage to those parts. If you are on the fence about getting a power probe and you do automotive work quite often, I'd say get it, you'll thank yourself that you did. ... show more

  • easier to get into smaller places
Better than I expected. The smaller size and pivot head really made a difference for testing circuits.

  • Updated: Good way to combine a meter, test probe, and apply power (needs inline fuse)
The Innova 5420 powered tester is made in Taiwan. I used this tool to find a bad ground, to find a wear spot on a trailer light that was blowing fuses, and to test and replace bad wiring/lights on another trailer with brakes. The ability to power devices from the tester is a big plus to help find if the wiring or the device is the problem. This made quick work diagnosing two trailers with LED lights. The voltage readout is also handy. This one tool does a better job of handling the same situations where I would need two or three different diagnostic tools/meters. For the money, I expected to have a good case (not included). I recommend this tester. Formerly 5 stars Update: This tester does not have any current limiting device (fuse or circuit breaker) in the power cord. That is an issue if you ground out something that is sensitive like a 5V sensor. So....I added an inline fuse to my setup. For the money, Innova should have something factory to handle this, and not for me to add on. I'm taking off one star, but if I damage anything, I'll be back to deduct another star. 4 stars (for now) ... show more

  • Great product
Worth every penny. Excellent product for the price point, the only negative i have for this probe is that it is not compatible with banana plugs.

  • Speeds Up Diagnostics Immensely
As a career vehicle technician, I found that having a portable, reliable source of vehicle power and ground in hand when diagnosing electrical problems is invaluable. So, years ago I built a tool that serves a similar function to this INNOVA 5420 Powered Circuit Tester. It just wasn’t as handy, elegant, or versatile as this one. The INNOVA is compact, easy to connect to the vehicle battery via battery clips or the accessory 12V (lighter) socket, and then gives you a source of battery voltage, 5V and 3V out of the probe tip (selectable with a slide switch) when you push the top of the spring-loaded rocker switch on the face of the tool. At 12V, I was easily able to run a 3A headlight bulb without a problem. With the bottom of the rocker switch pushed, the tool makes the probe tip act as a ground. That way, it can be used to activate a powered relay winding or bypass the horn button at the base of the steering column, so you don’t have to remove the air bag unnecessarily, for instance. With the rocker switch in the default center position, the probe tip feeds an accurate 10 Megaohm digital voltmeter display in the center of the tool’s handle as well as a pair of LED’s and a beeper/buzzer that differentiate between whether the tip is touching a powered terminal or a grounded one. If there is any downfall with this tool, it is the same problem that is exhibited by virtually all high-impedance voltage testing tools. I inserted 10,000Ω resistance in a ground circuit, and yet the tool still indicated that I was touching ground with both the buzzer and the green (ground) LED. Failure to understand this typical behavior can lead you to thinking that a circuit is grounded, when in fact it has such high resistance that it could not even allow a dash light bulb to light, resulting in a possible misdiagnosis. Of course, that’s where the real benefit of the tool comes in. If you are testing a powered component in circuit and you touch the probe to what you know should be the ground wire and the beeper and RED LED indicate that the tool sees “power” you can assume that the ground circuit has high resistance or is "open." Then, with a simple push on the bottom of the rocker switch, you can supply a “known good ground” through the tool back to the battery. If the component now operates, you can instantly verify that the component is good and that the vehicle's ground circuit for that component needs repair. Whenever the probe is touching a circuit or whenever the rocker switch is activated, the tool emits a relatively loud beep/buzz so you can do “blind” testing in cramped quarters. I wish this could be silenced or at least turned down, as it gets annoying after a while, but it is better to have than not. The tool also incorporates two bright white LEDs at the base of the probe to act as a very effective flashlight when working in dark areas, and the handle can be twisted to change the whole tool from a straight probe to a “pistol” shape, which is very handy. Lastly, the tool’s complement of wires that emit from the handle include an additional wire with a black insulated alligator clip at its end. This can be used for testing components out of circuit as it supplies a ground for the voltage emitted from the tool’s probe tip when the rocker switch is pressed to supply voltage (12V, 5V, or 3V) to the tip. Additionally, it can be used to check a fuse or wire for continuity, as the tool will indicate “ground” with its LED and buzz as soon as the probe touches the other end of the component. An open (blown) fuse would leave the tool silent and the green LED dark. Of course, all this could be clearly explained if the tool came with a comprehensive manual. But unfortunately, it only comes with a single-sheet “Quick Start Guide” which provides only the most basic information. The back of the Guide suggests that there is a “Full Manual” available at the company’s website, but I was unable to find one there as of 10/26/2022. The site only shows the same Quick Start Guide as comes in the box. Because of its robust construction, flexibility, accuracy, and proper function, I am still rating this tool “five stars” as it provides an excellent diagnostic advantage. The users just need to be aware that its high impedance indicators can be mis-leading sometimes and they must have a thorough understanding of the circuit to use the tool to its best advantage. A better manual with diagnostic examples would really help users get the most out of their tool investment. ... show more
