  • Great for camping, hunting and outdoor survival!
I really like this tool. It's extremely versatile, and actually works quite well for all of its functions. The blade is nice and sharp, and cuts well, but I probably wouldn't want to use it to chop down trees. The hammer is excellent and has a nice waffle pattern that keeps it from slipping on impact and helps direct all the energy into your target. The quality is excellent too! It's a very nice size, the angle of the head is very conducive to small chopping tasks, like removing small branches from firewood, etc. the locking mechanism is rock solid, and has zero free play. The handle also feels really good in the hand, and it isn't heavy by any means but has a very pleasing heft to it. As for value, at full price of $169.99 I'd say it's a bit much, but is currently on sale for $117, which I feel is very reasonable for a camping tool of this quality and which offers this much versatility. As always if I encounter any issues or think of anything else to add I'll update this review! ... show more

  • for the right mission
TLDR version: awesome tool if you understand the mission you have for it The "too long" version: I think I really like this folding hatchet, but with more use, I could either end up liking it a lot more or a lot less because of the blade size and this is the factor that will make this a win or loss for you. As you can see in my first picture, I put it against a plain old hatchet on a 2x8 chop test. As expected, the HX gets less bite as the blade surface is less than half of the traditional hatchet - less of a cut and more of a rough chop that was not as deep although, in some regards, more destructive. But, perhaps I'm getting ahead of myself. I like the build on this hatchet, I was thinking that a folding tool would feel kind of flimsy but this feels completely solid. The hinge release and locking tab are much sturdier than expected and the end result is that you have a folding hatchet that you aren't afraid to use. This is heavier than traditional blades, but that weight comes from the build quality and the ability to fold into a small package - it is one of the first design compromises that works really well... but it starts a decision chain you have to make. The ability to fold and keep a really small, packed profile also means the blade profile is smaller than on a traditional tool. This feels good in the hand, and despite having a shorter haft, you still get good power because of the head weight. Overall , the balance gives you a good feel of control with decent power behind your strike. So, we'll get back to the elephant in the room... the blade profile. The blade was not terribly sharp out of the box, but I fixed that pretty quick. I think , despite the short edge length, the blade is too wide and that means you get less cut and more "smash". You will work more to get a deep cut, but it does create a lot more damage to the area you are cutting... and perhaps, that is why they call this a "survival multitool". This is not a specialty tool, this is a multitool... it'll do the job, but it isn't going to be the best at that job. This will cut, it will hammer, it will stow into a small package... I like it, but it isn't going to replace the Kukri I normally use (because I like that more than a traditional hatchet), but, I am thinking this is the right tool for my truck "get home bag" or 3 day pack where versatility is more important. I think you'll like this if you keep in mind what this does well and where it isn't as good. As a final note, I think you'd do well to go look at HX Outdoors site for more information and pricing to see where this is a really good value. ... show more

  • Useful tool, very good quality; less folding axe, more hammer-wedge
More of a folding wedge than a hatchet. That’s what this does best: wedging. This has a sliding lock that keeps it locked open or closed, it is a very helpful feature. It uses a metal safety bolt on one side that can be operated with one thumb, the bolt keeps the hatchet from opening, and if open, it keeps the hatchet from accidentally folding closed. This is important, it increases the confidence I have in the tool. The rear end is knurled for hammering tent stakes, and I’m excited to have that feature added. I often rely on finding a good stick or rock to do my hammering, and it’s a real chore to set a dozen tent stakes with the wrong tool. The hatchet does need to be opened to use the hammer, leaving the blade exposed. It’s not ideal swinging an edge near taut nylon. It’s angled away, at least. This isn’t a razor-sharp axe, it has a short, shallow grind that’s designed for splitting. The axehead only has 1.33” of blade length. It’s a small working area, half the length of a typical axe head. This is not ideal for chopping logs. It’s adequate for trimming sticks off larger sticks, for trail maintenance. It has a wedge shape which helps split wood, and it can be hammered, which also helps split wood. It’s a good shape for working fallen trees into clean logs. It’s more of a stick splitter or a log trimmer, a hammerwedge. This has a rock-solid feel in my hand. It feels dense. It has a good weight behind it, very much hammer-like. The handle geometry is perfectly matched to the steel, every contour and jimp. It’s axe-like superficially, but its functionality is squarely as a hammer-wedge. A wedge that can hammer and can be hammered. ... show more

  • So sharp!
I waited a few months to review this so we could put it through its paces. This axe is great! It’s very sharp, folds up so conveniently and has held up to use very well. It looks slick and I enjoy using it. It’s definitely very heavy, not for backpacking! But it’s perfect for camping. I would order again. ... show more
