  • Here's how to get good results
I don’t normally write reviews, but I feel for my fellow tattooees who are sensitive to the pain the needles create, so I hope this info helps. I have tried both Dr. Numb maximum strength and Hush gel and by far, Hush gel is better; don’t bother with Dr. Numb for tattoos because it does not work as well, Hush gel is designed for tattoos and works better for this application. I got a back tattoo that took about nine 4-hour sessions, so I got a lot of experience with Hush gel. I have had the same experience as others describe with feeling like the product does not work. When it DID NOT work, I simply applied the product, wrapped it in plastic wrap and let it sit a couple of hours before my appointment. At my appointment, it felt like it barely had any numbing effect, which didn’t last long and I think it even made the pain feel worse than if I had used nothing because of the slight numbing effect and anticipating pain. I have had tattooing done with no anesthetic, so I do know what it feels like. Anyway, that’s how NOT to use the product. (For those of you that had the product work using this procedure, lucky you, you must have absorbent pores or something. Congrats, no need to read on.) For the rest of you… To get good results, here’s what to do: You need to clean and open the pores of the skin to prepare them to absorb the product. To do this, wash the skin with soap, then run the area under warm water for a minute or two. I simply took a shower of course, but there is a rule to how warm the water needs to be or the results are not as good. DO NOT USE HOT WATER. When I did, the numbing effect was significantly less than just using warm water (I think the hot water closes your pores back up or something.) The water should be more than lukewarm and feel warmer than your skin does, but not hot. Only run the water for a minute or two, dry off quickly and apply the product right away. To apply the product, do not rub it into the skin. You want to pat it on and spread it, but the more you try to rub it, the more the product evaporates. So, try to pat on a thick layer, go for a ¼” layer for best results. Wash your hands and immediately apply plastic wrap over the area that you just applied gel to and leave extra around the area. (I think adding an extra layer of plastic wrap so that you have 2 sheets on it adds extra insulation, too if you want to try that.) What you are going for here is keeping air out, so try to pat it down on the edges to keep air out, but don’t push the whole thing down on your skin too much so that you ruin the thick layer that you need. Now, leave the wrapped gel on for an hour and a half to two hours. I have found less than an hour and a half is not enough time to really get numb and have it last and more than two hours is not necessary. If you did everything right, you will feel the product tingling and burning slightly when it’s first applied and you’ll know it’s working; this feeling only lasts about the first 30 minutes after applying the gel. I was able to count on the product keeping me pretty numb for up to about 3 to 4 hours with it progressively wearing off more as time goes on. I noticed it numbing some areas more than others, probably because some areas have more nerves than others, but I think that’s the best results you can get from a topically applied anesthetic. I hope this helps and I hope you truly enjoy your tattoo when it’s complete! ... show more

  • AMAZING PRODUCTS
Very fast shipping But let me tell you this product is amazing! I put it on my skin 1 hour before getting my tattoo with Saran Wrap placed over it for the best results, it worked amazing and I didn’t even feel anything during my tattoo appointment to get my memorial tattoo of my son I lost.

  • Works very well
I have tried other products and they don’t work very well. This product works very well. Doesn’t numb completely but takes the edge off. I don’t typically numb my skin when I get tattoos but the chest could be unbearable. Everyone’s skin is different so I recommend trying a couple products to find out what works for you ... show more

  • Doesn't work.
Followed the directions perfectly and it failed. I have many tattoos never used any numbing cream or gel before. Decided to try for my coverup. Absolutely a waste of money. Felt everything just like it did without.

  • Doesn't hurt to try
Used it on my shin tattoo and it def took the edge off. Didnt completely take away any pain but its worth a try. By hour 4 I started feeling it a lot more. Slop it on and wrap it a good hour before your session.

  • interesting
i used it the right way . followed instructions .. i applied it a few times and i went around a spot i didn’t need it . the pain level was okay it def helped a lot but i still felt it . the weirdest part about it is that the spot where I didn’t put it is it different color now than the rest of my leg and it’s been like that for almost a month now I’ve called the company twice and left a message and no one has ever returned my call. ... show more

  • Works incredibly
Out of All of my tattoos I have never used numbing cream. Recently had a 7 hr tap out session to start a leg sleeve and a coworker whose back is fully covered recommended this! I did a test patch a day or two before to make sure I wouldn’t have an allergic reaction. My tattoo artist said the longer the numbing cream is on the longer it stays numb. So he would unwrap the plastic cling wrap as needed as he’d get to those parts of the leg. I probably didn’t feel anything until hour 5-6. Which was amazing! I recommend this 10/10. ... show more

  • Worked for me!!
Got a sternum tattoo and despite my doubts it worked!! I really didn't think it was going to work. I even emailed their customer service and they responded a few days later which was good enough for me. Here's what I asked in case anyone else wanted to know: What is the shelf life once open? Does it oxidize after the seal is broken? Once opened, Hush Numbing Gel typically has a shelf life of about 2 year, as long as it’s stored properly—ideally in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. It doesn’t oxidize rapidly, but keeping the cap tightly closed will help maintain its potency and effectiveness. ... show more
