  • Fabulous stand-alone drawing tablet! Some PC connection trouble (maybe my fault) and no pen storage
I was so excited to get my hands on a dedicated stand-alone drawing tablet from Huion! I was pleased with it as soon as I saw the nice, non-glare, paper-feel screen. The image is crisp and sharp, with great, vibrant colors, and the manga art default wallpaper is very attractive. I have an Android phone, so setup was a breeze, it just copied over all my info. My first move was to install my art program of choice, Clip Studio, only to discover that it comes pre-installed. You will find several paint programs waiting for you on this tablet! Clip Studio (Free doodle limited version with no saving and limited features, or two free trial options from 30 days to 3 months followed by a $5 per month/27 per year subscription) HiPaint (Seems like a pretty nice, basic free program) Medibang (Apparently free supported by ads, but did not appear to have pen pressure recognition) and Ibis Paint (7 day free trial followed by a $5/month sub.) You get the usual full suite of Google/Android apps, without the pointless bloatware you sometimes find on third party Android tablets. Drawing on this tablet is great. I immediately dashed off some fun doodles. The pen pressure detection was ace! It was a bit unsettling not to have my keyboard shortcuts/drawing tablet buttons, but it seems that most tablet drawing apps have simple undo/redo arrows you can click on, which is of course the most vital feature. It was also a new experience to try and scroll across the page with a finger and have it draw a line instead. You need two fingers on the screen if you want to move stuff instead of draw. All of that should be easy to adapt to with a little practice. I'm not commenting on most of the basic tablet functions, but since it is a useful thing to have when making artwork, I will say that the camera seems to take very nice pictures, nicer than my phone, anyhow. There are about 240 gb free in storage, so you have some room to save your artwork. (Or install more apps.) From the description of the tablet in the listing, I assume the 256 storage is primarily in an SD card, but I do not know much about the process of upgrading to a larger card if you want, or what the size limit is. Not a worry for now, for me. I had trouble getting this tablet to connect to my computer for file transfer. Disclaimer: I have a history of frustration trying to connect Android devices. Usually I find a solution, but this time I was utterly baffled. Attaching via a data cable did not work: the tablet treated it as a charger and there was no notification with the option to change to USB transfer. The PC did not see it at all. I tried changing to developer mode and changed USB default to file transfer. Still no notice and no recognition from my PC. Did not even show up in Device Manager, so I couldn't attempt to update the drivers. After failure with the included cable, I tried with the same data cable I use to connect to my phone and Android Mp3 players. No luck. Giving up on easy wired transfer, I attempted a bluetooth connection. My PC connected but showed it as an unidentified device, instead of the '(Name)'s Tablet' that the tablet claimed it would appear as. And there was a driver error message below the Unidentified name in the connected items list. Could not figure out how to transfer a file via bluetooth. Uploading a file to Google Drive worked fine, though so that seems to be the only viable file transfer option at the moment, and certainly simpler than bluetooth anyhow. So be prepared to save some cloud space for uploads. or to e-mail images. Accessories: You get a little baggie with some extra pen tips and a puller to remove the old one, and drawing glove so you won't smudge hand grease over the tablet screen. You get one of those little pokey things to use if you want to remove the SD card drawer. And you get a folio tablet cover which is fine as a generic tablet cover but not ideal for the purpose of a drawing pad. For one thing, it would be nice to have a loop or storage pocket or tether or something for securing the all-important pen stylus. (There is no place to store the pen, not even a pen stand, which would not be the ideal in a traveling drawing pad, but better than nothing.) The cover will stand the tablet up in two positions, one nearly vertical (good for display) and the other at a lower angle, which could be used for drawing, if you have a light hand. In my opinion, this is a great drawing pad, but if you plan to use it seriously, you probably want to invest in a sturdy adjustable tablet stand of some sort, and a carrying bag with a pocket for your pen. ... show more
