  • Best for media consumption and gaming...
I purchased the 8.4" version (WiFi only, space grey 4/64 GB) as I feel it is the best balance between size and portability. Also possible to watch media with one hand. The item arrived before the promised due date and in a sealed box with no surprises/ shock. PROS: 1. Excellent screen 2. Excellent build 3. Software (EMUI) is quite snappy and comes with Android Oreo 8.0 out of the box. 4. While too early to comment, battery life is great. Got about 6 hours SOT and 41 hours standby. But again nothing close to 10/ 11 hours, unless you were to use it continuously with low brightness. CONS: 1. Overrated speaker quality - not exactly a con, but given the kind of reviews I saw on the internet, the loudness from the speaker isn't satisfactory, especially due to high expectations. I'm not an audiophile with an ear to details, but I'm not deaf either. The sound quality is good with no issues at max volume. Just that it isn't loud enough as most reviews made it out to be. And I don't think there is any issue with my unit. 2. Button placement - it is more towards the rear end of the sides as opposed to being at the centre. Not a big issue on the 8.4" version. But the button placement on the 10.8" version is terrible. 3. Face Unlock not available. 4. Bootloader unlock won't be supported after 3rd week of Jul'18. 5. Screen brightness - brightness automatically reduces when some apps are opened, e.g. Chrome. Hopefully a software update would fix it. 6. No headphone jack. 7. Lack of good quality accessories like cases and tempered glass. 8. Aggressive RAM management. Apps are closed earlier than necessary. This is a problem with software with most OEMs from China/ South Korea. 9. STREAMING VIDEO OVER WIFI & BLUETOOTH IS A PROBLEM. THEY ARE STILL USING A SINGLE RADIO FOR BOTH WIFI AND BLUETOOTH, and as a result, THERE IS A LOT OF BUFFERING WHILE STREAMING A VIDEO OVER BLUETOOTH. THIS IS THE BIGGEST CON OF THIS DEVICE. Despite the cons, this is the best Android tablet currently available in my opinion. Reasonably priced and best suited for media consumption, gaming, etc. ... show more

  • The Huawei MediaPad M5 is an EXCELLENT Tablet
Finding a super nice small form factor tablet these days is increasingly difficult, your choices in a convenient ~8" size are Samsung and Apple. Personally, I equate Apple IOS to Socialism and Android OS to Capitalism, so since I'm a proud Capitalist, my choices in the Android OS are extremely limited. I've had two Fire HD 8's, one only months old, 🙄, if I say something bad about their tablets, they probably won't publish this...let's just say, I will likely display a target on their screens and tweak the scope on my hunting rifle. I also played with one of Samsung's better tablets in a store locally and while it was better than the HD 8, it had only one tiny tinny speaker and I could barely hear it on maximum volume. Now to the Huawei, after looking up the phonetic pronunciation of the name, looking at the specifications, namely the 8 processors, screen and the Harmin Kardon speakers, I pulled the trigger, not literally as with the aforementioned HD 8s. To put it simply, the Huawei M5 is the equivalent of a BMW M5 in the Android tablet realm, it's extremely fast, as fast or faster than my brand new Android phone, the sound is fantastic coming from speakers so small...keep in mind, it's not audiophile quality, but it is really good. The screen is crisp and bright, the battery last forever...I've been on this tablet literally all day today and I have half battery right now after 8pm. The Huawei M5 is not as cheap as an HD 8, 😐 it's not as cheap as an HD 8, that's the point. The build quality is on par with the Socialist Apple product, and yes, I am aware of the irony that Huawei is a Chinese company. In fact, the build quality is the best I've seen in a tablet of this form factor in a long time. It's simply a great product, worth the money. ... show more

  • An elegant Android device
This is a beautifully engineered tablet made of aluminum and glass. It has '2.5 D' glass, which means the glass curves into the aluminum body, and it has small bezels, so the screen is a nice size but the tablet is not too large. It is lightweight and quite comfortable to hold in one or both hands. The IPS LCD display is sharply detailed and vivid, I've been using IPS LCD and AMOLED screens for years and I like IPS LCD as much as OLED, it is just as good for my purposes. The speakers are excellent for a tablet, good rich sound as good or maybe slightly better than HTC Boomsound speakers. The processor is excellent, most benchmark scores make it a solid competitor to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835. It has 4GB of RAM, which is enough and 64 GB of internal storage and is expandable with a microSD card up to 256GB, so this is a serious computer. It has LTE radios which have been disabled for the American market, I don't know why Huawei chose not to release an LTE version for America, again, there is a market here for LTE enabled tablets and my next tablet will have cellular connectivity whether Huawei makes it, or Apple or Lenovo makes it. It has one of those combination SIM card trays that holds a MicroSD card but there's a little bar of plastic where the SIM card should go. China uses different frequencies for LTE than the USA, so there's probably no point in trying to fit an American SIM card into the tray. Lack of LTE connectivity is the only reason this device doesn't earn five stars. It's almost a perfectly designed device at an excellent price, I'm used to Vanilla Android but I have adapted to EMUI without any problem in just a few days. The combination fingerprint sensor/home button/back button/recent tabs button appears identical to the one on my phone but it behaves differently. There is absolutely no advantage to getting rid of the headphone jack, the adapter is a pain. I've ordered some backups for when I inevitably do lose it. The battery does last about 11 hours in mixed use, that should be better, I know manufacturers think we secretly want ultra thin devices instead of the adequate battery life we ask for, but they are wrong. This does not have quick charging or rapid charging. It says it is doing some kind of fast charging, but it takes several hours to charge this tablet. BTW, I checked to see if Bluetooth and WiFi work at the same time and they do, on mine. That seems to be a problem others have had but I checked and they work fine together on my tablet. Update: Fast Charging does work. It's different from the Rapid Charging on my Nexus 6p or Turbo Charging on my Moto G 6 but it went from 47% to 90% in less than an hour last night. ... show more
