This is a great "all-in-one-printer." And for this price (under $100), it's a steal! As a retired Microsoft MCSE and former IT Administrator for a small Midwest county, I have dealt with HP printers for over 30 years. I've worked on IBM Line printers and Selectric Wheel printers, DEC Chain printers, laser, ribbon, and thermal printers, but for the home/office, inkjet printers offer a great value. When my old HP OfficeJet All-In-One bit the dust after 18 good years of printing, scanning and copying, after due diligence, I settled on this model, the HP OfficeJet Pro 8610. While it came with a set-up CD-ROM, I simply plugged it in using the USB port on my iMAC (Yes, I made my living servicing Microsoft networks, but learned enough to have an Apple Mac at home) the printer downloaded the newest software drivers for OS X and I was good to go within 10 minutes. The HP software will want you to download and use their scanner software, but I found that Apple's OS X Preview app works just fine to scan in documents (in a PDF file format - if you want an OCR image you will need to secure a third-party app for your platform), and images are just as easy, in TIF, JPG, PNG, GIF as well as BIT Mapped. The unit has a large LCD instruction screen that makes it easy to operate manually, especially the copy function. It has a very convenient sheet feeder (something my old HP All-In-One did not have) for the copy function, and it works well with a pile of 12 pages, copied 4 times with collation. It will print a very reasonable JPG image on Glossy Photo Paper (although your local drugstore or big-box store is much cheaper if you want more than one copy). The paper tray also converts to handle envelopes every easily', Now, as with ALL inkjet printers, and especially with HP inkjets (they invented the inkjet medium waaaaay back in the 1980s), it has always been a question of the cost of the ink cartridges. They are outrageously expensive. And this printer uses four (4) separate cartridges; black, cyan, magenta and yellow. The JPG photo prints look great, but that's nearly $75 in inkjet cartridges. And HP is notorious for sending "starter" cartridges with new printers that are only good for a few pages before you have to buy new, full, HP cartridges. If the astronomical cost of inkjet cartridges is your main concern about a new printer, an HP printer is not for you. However, they may have got our message about holding us for ransom over the inkjet cartridges. A new program they call "Instant Ink" might be the answer. For a small monthly subscription fee, they will monitor the ink levels on the printer (of course an Internet connection either via ethernet or Wi-Fi is mandated for this service) and send you new ink a little before you need it. For my home/office printing needs, a less than $5 a month subscription fee is adequate. Seems like a bargain to me. And you have no idea how upset I got when I learned that each inkjet printer cartridge comes with a "hard wired" expiration date. So HP will not replace the unused, dried-up, never-before-opened, nonfunctioning ink cartridge stored on my shelf which I purchased at great expense so I could readily replace the cartridge in my printer and continue to print my project at 3 AM in the morning. It has an expiration date. Image that. I checked at the local OfficeMax and the new genuine HP ink cartridges they had for sale were all within 6 months of expiration. And of course, the printing software knows the cartridge is expired and won't load it in the printer. This frustration will never happen with the "Instant Ink" program. Now setting up the wireless printing via Wi-Wi is almost as easy as the wired version. Almost. The big thing is the putting in the SSID WPA2 key. This, of course, can be up to 128 bytes long. As long as you can remember your WPA2 key, no problem. After I put the printer (and you can rename it something that sounds like it's supposed to belong on your private Wi-Fi network) on my home Wi-Fi network, I then searched for it on my wife's Windows 10 laptop and set it up all from the Internet. In the Wi-Fi mode, this printer works just fine. There is even an option to give the printer it's own email address, so you can forward any email to it for printing. Nice. And printing from an Andriod or Apple phone is simple as well. This is a great home/office printer which originally cost nearly $300. It has almost every bell-and-whistle I know. At its present price, buy it.

I have only had this printer one week, so i will edit the review if necessary in the future. I got it for home use (non-business), i would say i print several times a day on average, i do not often use color printing, i fax fairly regularly and occasionally scan (but this printer is easier to scan with so i will probably use it more). This is the most recent in a long list of HP inkjet printers I've had, most of them all in ones, going back to the 90s. They have all been long lasting until my previous one, the OfficeJet 6600. I loved that all in one, it met my needs perfectly, was well designed and included great features. A couple of weeks ago, in the middle of a print job without any previous symptoms, it suddenly died. It was a print head failure, according to HP. Unfortunately, it was only a couple months past 2 years old. On the other hand, it only cost about $114 including tax so not terribly painful. I remember not that long ago having to pay over $300 for an HP all in one, such as the OfficeJet 6500 i had, or the 6400. Those lasted a long time. Years and years. When i went to Staples to get a replacement a couple of weeks ago, i didn't like the size of the 8610 which i had gone there to get, and then i saw the 6830. Since i was happy with my 6000 printers i'd had before, and since it was a more compact size, and it cost the same as the 6600, about $114 including tax, i chose to get that one instead of the 8610, which cost $140 before tax at Staples. It was easy to set up and had new features the 6600 didn't have, and everything tested out ok, but then a few days later, it developed glitches with scanning and with faxing, to the point of not functional. I wanted to like that printer, i wanted it to work. But it was clearly too glitchy, i had not had those kinds of problems with previous printer/all in ones. So, i ordered the 8610 from Amazon with Prime to get it fast, and when it arrived, i returned the 6830 to Staples. The Staples price for the 8610 was $140 before tax. Amazon was $100, so no contest about that. It is clearly a more sturdy solid printer than the 6830, i can feel the difference, it has shown no glitchiness of any kind. It does everything i need reliably and fast, set up was fast and easy. All functions work well. The only remaining questions are about reliability, will it last. I like it so much though that i immediately bought a Canopy protection plan policy on Amazon for it, 3 years protection for about $6.50. It covers everything after the manufacturer's warranty expires at one year (or two with HP, i think), and if your printer breaks down, they quickly issue you an amazon gift card to buy another comparable printer. Hopefully that will get me quickly back in business if a print head fails again. i do not have any problem with the size of the 8610. It fits in the same snug spot where i have kept my other smaller printers, and i don't notice a difference, it was easy to get used to the change. The only things that, if i had it to do over, i would spend the extra $30 and get the 8620 (i didn't realize it had these differences) is that, one, the 8620 has a much larger display, which is useful to me, and two, the 8610 does not do two sided copies of two sided originals, i did not realize that. It does two sided copying but only of one sided input. But these are not deal breakers for me, i'm happy with the 8610 because it's solid and has worked perfectly out of the box, and i rarely use two sided printing. The larger display is important to me because i fax, but not that often--probably twice a month on average, 2-3 times a month, and having more room to punch the numbers would help---but i do not know if the 8620 has more roomy number spacing or it's just a larger display that can fit more on it. That may or may not be a difference that would matter to me. I don't take a star off for these things because the 8610 is a very low priced printer and wasn't advertised as having anything different than what it has. So far, it seems to be a very good value for the price. If i have any problems or any other new info about this printer, i will edit the review, but i am very happy with it so far, and could not say the same about the 6830.

Don't waste your money or your time on this "update". This printer will not grab and pull the paper properly inside the unit. On setup, I kept getting a "paper jam" message" despite following the proper set up instructions. The printer seems incapable of pulling the paper inside and instead it provides constant error messages. The printer even said there was something wrong with the ink cartridges since the printer failed to be able to align the printer heads. The first sheet it was able to spit out before all the jams had a huge blob of black ink on it. After that, the endless nightmare of paper jams started. This is not an improvement over the 8600 and I'm sending this turkey back. It even looks and feels cheap compared to the the 8600 Pro right out of the box. *UPDATE* Today I went to OfficeMax to purchase an HP 8600 Pro for $119. They had a great sale and the price was right, so I decided to buy it. Out of the box the 8600 Pro feels sturdier and built with more quality than the 8610. I pulled all the packing materials off and went through the set up. Set up was a BREEZE and my printer was up and running in about 15 minutes or so out of the box. There were no paper jams, no problems with the printer cartridges not aligning, no problems connecting to the internet or any other set up issues. The paper effortlessly pulled each sheet from the paper tray with no problems and no jams. I must have wasted about 20 sheets of brand new paper on the 8610 trying to get it to work correctly before I gave up and wasted an entire ream. The HP 8600 Pro printer just looks and feels like a quality machine compared to the 8610. I will say that I got the last 8600 available at any of the OfficeMax locations near me. If you can find an 8600 Pro or Plus, go get it. If you already have one, keep it. If you have an 8600 Pro or Plus and are considering "upgrading" to a 8610, forget about it. It's not an upgrade. Instead, the 8610 is serious downgrade. If you are looking for a new printer and you are between the 8600 Pro and the 8610, go out and find an 8600 as fast as possible if there are any left.

Once I got this set up and running, it is working fine. And you sure can't beat the price for all these features. The printer seems quite sturdy. It comes well packed; like another reviewer here, I had to use the plastic bag it's wrapped in to pull it out of the box. The bag is pretty sturdy, so don't worry about it tearing open. And I have this AIO working from both a Windows 10 and a Windows 7 computers. Now, my gripe. The sheet of paper with the setup instructions shows how to take it out of the box, take off all the wrapping and plug it in to the wall outlet. That's it. You are on your own to install the ink cartridges and it's not obvious how it's done. Opening the access door (and you're on your own figuring out where the door is and how to open it) does not initially expose the cartridge carrier. Don't waste your time trying to find instructions on HP's web site either. After wasting about a half hour on HP's web site, I took the bull by the horns and figured out how to do it on my own and I'll pass along how I finally figured out how to install the 4 cartridges. You have to use the touch screen on the front of the printer to install the cartridges. Just keep tapping the screen until you get to the installation screen. And don't open the door before you do this or you'll get a "door open" warning you won't be able to get past. Now, open the door and the carrier will slide into view. Since there are no instructions or pictures on how the 4 cartridges fit in the carrier, you'll have to study the thing for a minute to figure out how they go in (suggestion: get a flashlight). Since there is no detent or "click" when the cartridge is seated you'll be wondering if it's in all the way. And don't push the cartridge a second time, or it will forcibly pop out onto your table or desk leaving you to start all over. There are also no instructions on how to get it to connect to your WiFi so, again, you're on your own. Just keep tapping on that display window and you'll find the WiFi setup. A little miniature keyboard will display to enter your password and it then immediately connects. Now, a warning about installing the drivers. Do not, under any circumstances download the drivers from HP's web site. HP uses their own download manager (which you don't need) which does a pretty good job of hiding the downloaded location on your computer. Not only that, I could not get the printer to work after downloading these unnecessary files. I won't go through the hour of misery we went through trying to get this thing to work and to delete that well hidden HP download, but suffice it to say that all you have to do is go to the "Devices and Printers" section of Control Panel and click on "add a printer". Assuming your wireless network is up and running, the computer quickly finds the 8610 and Windows will install the printer for you in about a minute. You do not need either the provided disk or any downloads from HP. A final major gripe about that HP download. In addition to how it caused all sorts of problems trying to get my printer to work, the download provides you with a seemingly unending series of nag screens, popups and web links to get you to join HP's ink cartridge service. As of this writing, you can purchase ink cartridges significantly cheaper from Amazon than from HP. 5 stars for the AIO and 4 stars for the lack of meaningful setup instructions.

First a little background on which I am basing my comparisons. I am replacing a much more expensive Brother MFC 9840 (that costs about 5 times as much for the printer and 4 times as much on consumable purchase price.) I recently got fed up with the Brother toner quality and also purchased a HP LaserJet Pro 400 series to print my letters. While finishing up the toner I had on hand for the Brother I decided I liked the convenience of having two printers going at once - one for envelopes and one for letters. I also realized I needed to replace the copier/scanner of the Brother. So my primary objectives for this unit are the copier/scanner functions and envelope printing. I run 500 - 1000 envelopes per month. My initial impressions out of the box were good. Unit was well packaged and setup was simple and intuitive. No issues. Quality seems good, solid. In line with the LaserJet I recently purchased as well. The user interface is very nice. Touchscreen. Nicer by far than the LaserJet. Have just briefly tested the scanner/copier and they worked fine. Today I had an opportunity to do a print run of envelopes. I must say I am thrilled with this unit so far. Aside from having to change some margin parameters on my envelope copy, it has been an absolutely seamless transition. The paper tray holds just as many envelopes as the lasers did. The feeding and output is flawless (700 envelopes so far without one jamb or problem.) The print quality is good. Not laser, but perfectly acceptable. The operation is quiet. The interface and prompts are better than either brand laser. When it runs out of paper, it prompts, you reload, hit "ok" and it starts printing again. Speed is fine. The specifications say it will be slightly slower than the lasers. In reality, both lasers were noticeably slower than advertised when printing envelopes for some reason. So this officejet may very well be slightly faster. Consumable cost and use is still unknown, but I can say I have done this whole print job (envelopes with color company logo and tag lines) on the initially included cartridges and they are not warning of low ink yet.

Easy printer to set up. Once I took it out of the box , unwrapped it and plugged it in, this printer was printing within 10 minutes. The screen leads you through each step..no need to look at installation instructions. I went on my Macbook Air, pulled up a document and it printed. I did NOT have to install the software on my Mac or the printer. ( I am in the transition from a Windows 7 to a Macbook Air. Review is for either a windows or a Mac.) This is , by far, the easiest printer that I have ever installed. I bought a Cannon wf printer 2 weeks ago, and it would not recognize the wifi , so I returned it. I am so very pleased with the simple no-hassle setup. A small child , who can read, could set this printer up. The only thing I was unsure of when installing was how to install the ink cartridges- the "case" that houses the cartridges looks different than the old printers. . But, don't worry, there is an automated video on the screen that shows you exactly how to install the cartridges. You do not force the cartridge in past when it wants to stop and there is no "clicking" sound when the cartridge is installed correctly. If the cartridge is in wrong, the printer will reject the cartridge- just push it in. There is an Email assigned to the printer- a nice feature! Your printer has it's own email account- who needs a fax anymore? Send an email to your printer, or, better yet, give your printer's email address to others , and when they email the printer, the document will print AND you get an email notification that a your printer received a document . That saves you steps! You don't have to open your email to send it to the printer ! Can scan to flash drive, an email address, your computer. Found out I did have to download the HP drivers in order to scan. It was flawless..HP knew what my operating system was and took about 5 minutes to download. Now, I can clean printheads, see ink levels, scans, etc from my MacBook. I had an Epson and a Cannon within the last month that constantly dropped the Wifi connection, after one print job. I had to reestablish the wifi connection multiple times, and that was frustrating ! For some reason, I thought I would venture out and try something other than an HP. I had always had HP's. That was a mistake ! HP really has the user in mind- from setup to operation of all functions. Kudos to HP for their design and easy installation.

This printer at this price point blew me away. Amazon shipping was lighting fast as always. What really is impressive about this purchase is the printer itself. It pretty much sets its self up for you. It was set up with an Acer desktop using Windows 10 and integrated seamlessly. Although the printer comes with an insertable DVD with the software on it, I didn't use it. The computer saw it immediately, but I didn't choose that setup wizard either. I went on to the HP site and downloaded the latest suite that was published. That way I didn't have to keep installing updates. This printer does it all, copy (HUGE PLUS you can sit a stack of papers to be copied, hit the button, and go on to do other work as opposed to some printers that require you to place page to be copied on the screen one at a time.) Faxes, scans, you can even email it to print from your computer and have the pages ready for you when you get to work the next day. It also collates. The ink colors are so bright and seem to pop off the page. The ink will last forever it seems. Since I am starting a new company office there was tons to print out between employee handbooks and vendor credit apps. I set the printer to draft mode thinking I would burn through the initial cartridge in no time (the cartridges that come with new printers are less than half full) A month later I am still printing on the initial cartridge. I also like that the black/color cartridges are separate so that you don't have to be wasteful, you can replace individual colors. All in all, probably the best printer I've ever purchased. It is well worth the $200 MSRP, so I feel doubly lucky to have acquired it for $99.

***An update to my review: I am lowering the rating to a 3 from a 4 because the printer seems to be declining. The paper feeder in the printer is getting to be poor. It only wants to work well with plain paper. Recently the printer is having trouble with feeding photo paper. I have printed 100s of photo paper pages, but now it is becoming almost impossible to feed photo paper. I have tried cleaning the rubber paper feeding roller and still no improvements. When I first bought the printer it had some trouble loading paper but then it stopped having troubles. But the problem is back and I can't really use it for 1/2 of the purpose for buying it if it won't feed photo paper. In addition, the printer prints photos with a red tint to almost all pictures. I have also noticed the interior of the printer is getting a haze of magenta lightly dusted over all of the surfaces of the printer itself. (Inside the inkjet cartridge loading area--in the printing area of the printer.) It is not that old. I have only had it for a few months. I have used it a lot, but I don't think it is going to be able to live up to expectation based on recent performance. End of update ------------------------------- Overall I like this printer. 1. ADF works well. IRIS OCR does a very good job. Love the searchable PDFs from scanned documents. 2. Printing is very good on ColorLok paper. It is ok on regular paper. Makes excellent photos on photo paper. 3. I like the HP Instant ink concept. I subscribed for the amount of pages I think I will print and HP send me think as needed. The pricing is much more agreeable than purchasing ink cartridges. The printer is not perfect. 1. There is no paper accessory tray. A lot of printers have an extra paper input on the front that allows you to insert the occasional odd size (envelopes, executive paper, stationary, etc.) into the printer. This printer has no such thing. You have to remove the paper from the paper tray, adjust to fit the odd size, insert the odd size, print it, readjust the paper tray, put back the letter size paper, then resume normal printing. 2. The scanner does not scan photos as well as I think it should. A long time complaint I have with HP is that they always design their scanners to "process" a photo. You do not get a choice in the matter. Their processing attempts to remove moire patterns and noise from pictures. This is fine for documents and probably good for documents, but it can screw up pictures. This is not a big deal for me. I have an Epson scanner that I can use for photos. A tip I have for other buyers: This printer is part of a group of All-in-Ones from HP: the OfficeJet 8610, 8620, and 8630. The main difference between these 3 is minimal. The 8610 ($99 at this time) has a smaller screen than the 8620 ($159 at this time) and this seems to be the only difference - that is a big difference for just a little bit larger display. The 8610 has a smaller screen than the 8630 and lacks the 2nd tray but seems to be no other difference. If you want to save money buy the 8610. If you need the 2nd tray, you could buy it separate--separately the tray only costs $67. HP Officejet Pro 250 Paper Tray A8Z70A (The 8630 costs $200)
