I really enjoy watching the Dog Whisperer, Cesar Millan's show so I out of curiosity I bought 3 of his books. This one is very good. I found there were things that I could learn and put into practice, even after having dogs for almost 45 years. I do understand what the person who wrote the review about Cesar's "zen" thing and that it is frustrating when you don't have an older dog to help with the house training. Just let me say that I am an Australian Shepherd breeder and I still have to house break a puppy even though I have the parents. The whole example thing is frustrating to me too. I find it hard to believe that a breeder can have 8 week old puppies house broke and crate trained. Although she did say she often keeps her puppies until 10 weeks. I did find a lot of great information in the book and the above things mentioned didn't bother me much. In fact my puppies new families get a puppy package from me and I have now included this book in the puppy package. I think it will be very helpful to families who have never owned a dog or have not had a puppy in a long time. So far my puppies new families have been very happy to receive the book. So many times people ask me about vaccinations, crate training, what kind of food, where puppy should sleep, and on and on. I am happy to answer their questions but it is a lot of info to absorb. So the book comes in very handy for them. My one word of warning however is that often Cesar says to consult your vet. Where that is a very good idea and I recommend it I would also caution that it is not possible for your vet to know everything. A great example is nutrition. Most Vets are not schooled in nutrition. In fact one of the worst dog foods you can buy is often sold in vet offices. It has the word "science" in it's name. Great tactic. Sell it at a vets and use the word science in your name. Anyway just remember no one loves you dog as much as you do. Over all this book was a interesting read with very useable information.

I bought this book in Februaury 2011 for foundation methods on raising my new Doberman pup. I had seen the show and like the techniques used by Ceasar. I would like to say, however, that this book is really not for "beyond" puppy hood in a training or obedience sense, but more for establishing foundation routines, building a respectful human-dog relationship (or pack relationship),learning dog behavior, and communication between you and your new puppy. You will take a lot of valuable information away with this book on the behavior of canines, but there is very little on training and obedience or going further in pack leadership skills. Ceasar makes no excuses for this and is clear about the purpose of this book from the description. Using boundaries with your puppy right away is invaluable information that needs little reinforcement in your dogs lifetime after it has been firmly established the first time. creating a comfortable environment and respect between you, your dog, other people, and other dogs. I can say that I am very pleased with how my dog grew up by teaching myself these exercises, and I love to change peoples minds about my breed. He is very well behaved and I picked truly the perfect dog for myself with the advice given, my Doby and I couldn't be happier.

Caesar has done it again! This book walks you through everything you need to know about from getting your new family member to bringing him/her into their new home and beyond and it works! Its not obedience training as much as parenting training. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who is even thinking of adding a new fur baby to the family it will make bringing home and raising your new family member into a respectable well mannered member of your family so much easier and less stressful on everyone. Cesar will help you to raise a great member of your family just read and follow his teachings. Thanks Cesar for all you have done to help show the world Cesar’s Way and also to show that the so called “bully breads” are just bug babies wanting to share love with and shouldn’t be condemned for what a few owners have trained their dogs to do.

I thought this was a fast, informative read. If you've seen Cesar's show, then there's nothing new in this book. In fact, I think there is an episode dedicated to the four dogs he highlights in this book which tells the same story. I'm fairly confident that if one were to watch that show, you'd get most of the information in this book. The writing is decent which made for a fast read. I found the personal anecdotes a bit distracting. I don't care what the other writer did when they brought the dog home to her house. I guess I came to this book thinking it would be more practical than the Monks book. And it is but it's still not quite like a handbook. I wanted something in which I could consult for quick answers with my puppy: how many times a day should I feed him? What do to if... What happens when ... Things of that nature. To be fair, most of my questions were covered, but the narrative format of the book doesn't allow for quick answers. Google is your friend. I guess I wanted a more pithy and searchable How To manual as opposed to a treatise, or reflection, on the art of raising a dog. I think a better editor might have helped him with this as they organized the chapters. At the end of each chapter, they try to do with with a few take away points, but it's still insufficient to be a useful reference guide in my opinion. Cesar's methodology has many detractors, so if this is your first book on puppy/dog training, you might want to look at some of the less-hyperbolic criticisms of Cesar and come to your own conclusion. There are definitely many different perspectives on how to properly raise your dog, Cesar's way being one of them. A point at which Cesar has taken great care to make in this book as if responding directly to such criticism over the years. I think this book is best seen as a useful contribution to your collection of books about your raising your dog. You should definitely not buy it thinking you'll find all the answers encapsulated in this short volume. One fairly important con of the text is that the subtitle is definitely misleading: "through puppyhood and beyond". You get a great deal on puppyhood. Perhaps too much before 8 weeks when many folks will be taking home their puppy's for the first time (don't get me wrong the information contained within is informative and important, but it could have been condensed to make room for much more practical sections in the puppyhood, adolescence, or adult phase of your puppy's life). You get a healthy section on puppyhood. But then adolescence and definitely adulthood get the short shrift. I think adulthood comprised two pages on my ipad. Perhaps a bit more, but not by much.

This book is great--very informative, positive, and practical. I would recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about getting a puppy. As an experienced animal handler, I feel that this book is a great guide for the beginner and experienced alike. Among the things that I find particularly useful are the careful, step-by-step instructions, specific examples from puppies that Millan raised while working on this book, discussions from experienced breeders and dog trainers, and an extensive appendix of suggestions for further reading. The only thing not in the book that I would have loved would be a more thorough discussion of integrating the new puppy into a home that has older dogs already. While there is some discussion of this, it is not enough to provide the guidance I really would like. While some dog trainers will denounce Millan's methods as archaic and harsh, I would encourage readers to keep an open mind. While Millan does not employ a positive-reinforcement-only approach--which is what many of his detractors prefer--his methods are gentle and concerned only with the well-being of the dog. His methods have made a huge difference in my life and in my dog's life. She is happier and more balanced when I follow Millan's formula. Everyone who meets her comments on how well-behaved she is and takes great pleasure in petting and playing with her--even people who are typically frightened of dogs or just uncomfortable around them. As a high-energy, alpha-type dog, I don't believe that would be the case if I had not followed Millan's methods; for my strong-willed dog, positive reinforcement is only sometimes a strong enough motivation to encourage the behaviors I want, but discipline coupled with positive reinforcement is exactly what she needs.

This is a wonderful book and it's nothing but useful. There is no real downside to reading it if you are a new puppie owner. I found, after reading it, that I was doing several things wrong. Especially comforting an agitated dog which reinforces the behavior and its anxiety rather than alleviating it. The only real complaint I have about Milan is that he really seems to both oversimplify and over complicate raising a dog. According to Cesar the solution to every dog's problem is "calm assertive energy". Well, great, okay, but easier said than done, especially if you tend to be a rather tightly wound person at your core, or tend to become stressed when a dog is misbehaving. It's hard to stifle natural reactions. Then, of course, you become stressed worrying that the dog will pick up on your stressed state. On the other hand, this book portrays dogs as so incredibly sensitive and easy to screw up that it will make you fear that you will somehow ruin you dog for life! I mean, I had dogs before all this came around and they turned out just fine. I didn't treat them like a carton of emotional eggs either. Again, there is nothing but useful information in this book, but at the same time, it can be very intimidating because it seems to put an enormous amount of responsibility on dog owners. When I read of how people in the book treat their dogs as if they are some sort of Hindu cow, it became somewhat irksome.
