  • Love this thing!
I was going to buy this a couple of years ago but backed off due to the smaller capacity relative to a typical cart type spreader. I have half an acre and it is a workout pushing a cart. I opted for a used Lesco commercial spreader that holds 80 lbs of product. After every spreading task, I am exhausted pushing that thing around. I revisited the Hooyman and figured… let me try it. I can section my lawn off and do a few fill ups to make up the difference in capacity. Man… this is the easiest fertilizer application I have done to date. Weigh out your product and just walk. It is buttery smooth. Here is a pro tip for the folks on here that say the thing jams, the key is to be sure the chute is closed so no product is flowing out of the hopper. Begin spinning the spreader plate by turn the crank. Open the chute and walk. That’s it! Keep the crank spinning the entire time. To stop spreading, keep spinning the crank while closing the chute. Once closed, keep spinning to clean out any residual product on the plate. Done! Spread about 30 lbs of fertilizer without a single jam. This thing is awesome and worth the $125 or whatever it’s currently selling for. I’ve wasted so much money on spreaders prior to finding and settling on this. It’s my go to for all of my lawn care needs. ... show more

  • Handle on the left side not the right side
Nice spreader. I just wish the handle was on the right side and not the left side.

  • Expensive price tag, Very cheap quality
I thought I would spend the extra money to get a quality spreader. Man was I wrong. I would have been better off buying a $30 spreader. It broke on the first field (only quarter of an acre) I went to plant. Everything is very cheap and plastic on this thing. Of course I was waiting for the rain after I purchased to plant. By the time I used it I was a week out of return window. Bunch of BS in my opinion. My advice save your money and look elsewhere for quality. ... show more

  • Best hand spreader
I have used many types of hand spreaders. All had problems with keeping a consistent rate of spread and were difficult to hold and operate. All of those problems solved with the Hooyman. Solid build and smooth operation. Chest harness is great. Worth every penny!

  • Poor design.
The spreader opener is designed poorly. It jams and the opener is made of plastic with notches that will break easily. They should have just made a shift plate with no plastic notches.

  • Jammed First Time I Used It
I REALLY wanted to like this thing, but I think they tried to do too much with it. The chest harness is more complicated than it needs to be. I find myself futzing with it more than spreading seed and no matter how I adjust it the spreader doesn't seem to sit right on me. I like the simplicity of my Solo spreader strap that I just throw over my shoulder and go. The hand crank is also operated with your left hand, which is a minor annoyance, but still, a design flaw I found really strange. But worst of all, the thing completely jammed up the very first time I used it. That never once happened in all of the years I used my Solo spreader. I can't get it to fling seeds at all anymore and I will have to take it apart to troubleshoot it. Luckily I still have my old spreader so I was able to get the job done. ... show more

  • Save your money
I bought one last fall. Excited to try it with all the features it offered over my bag spreader. Loaded the hopper with winter wheat. Strapped the unit into the harness, walked 10’, opened seed hopper and made it 7 steps before handle broke off. I was able to get it rigged back on to finish. A few times the unit would get hung up, but I was able to get it going. Very disappointing but it lead me to buy a solo. Much happier now with it. ... show more

  • Good Idea, Terrible Design
So many good features except the one that counts…spreading the seed. I was excited to use it for the first time a couple weeks ago. Poured in my clover seed, put in the spreader, and within seconds it completely jammed. Couldn’t even turn the handle. The seeds had completely seized up the wheel. Not even 10 seconds in and it’s completely useless. Contacted the company directly over two weeks ago and still no response. ... show more
