Bonus offer by signing up for the authors' recipes. Has a list of things you will need-nothing that cost a lot of money. Shows photos of things mentioned. Essential elements and a health check to make sure you're ready. Has section on what foods and not to skip meals and drink lots of water among other suggestions. Examples of good motiviational postit's are included. Explains more about the different types of training in the book and why you should use them and how. Love clor photos of exercises and words used to explain how they are done-so important to do them right. Love that you can do alternative exercises if you can't do the ones mentioned in the book and the author explains why. Other resources available to help with fitness and exercise motivation as this is only for beginners to get started with. Like ending parts where exercises are shown in color photos along with how to do them. Motivational challenges are also discussed. Other works by the author are highlighted at the end along with 'about the author'. ... show more

  • Its pretty good. Would be nice if there were more ...
It wasn't what I was expecting. You know how you shouldn't judge a book by its cover? That's what I did. I thought it was a resistance band workout book with examples of exercises with resistance bands. I was wrong. Didn't help that Amazon paired with the resistance bands I purchased. I gave it a shot as the issue really was my not putting forth the effort to verify. Its pretty good. Would be nice if there were more specifics but that's what pay a personal trainer for.   • A great start for the beginner!
I have just started using this book, and I really have enjoyed it so far. It has been a solid beginning, but, not being patient man, on first glance, I thought, "I'll never gain muscle and look good following this technique shown here", but, when I started up the walking as instructed in this book and was winded after a pretty short walk, I realized that I have to follow the instructions as directed, and in time, realize that things will slowly improve. I know that the techniques will be expanded upon, and that the author is laying a solid foundation for later. The one thing I did want to address for other readers is the issue of resistance bands or tubing. I love using resistance tubing, but, there is no standardization among brands as to color or construction. You may own resistance tubing, as what is used in this book, or, you may own resistance bands. I would urge anyone who has a band or tube already in their position that differs from the one used in the book to do a little homework and find exercises for their type of band or tube that is similar to that demonstrated in the book. This way, you can get going and get started without getting hung up on not doing the exercises exactly as listed in the book. The important part is to get started and to keep going. You can always order tubing as is used in the book, but, if you already own something, use it and get started! The instruction and pictures shown are excellent and helpful, and with patience, persistence, and proper effort, I don't see why any reader who does as instructed won't find complete success! ... show more

  • Not what I expected
Not a much resistance band training as we expected. If you are looking for resistance band workouts look elsewhere.

  • Good exercise book
Being a health care provider, the first thing that caught my attention and relaxed me with this read was the section, at the beginning of the read, “Health check” which emphasized the importance with having medical clearance to start in on an exercise regime, and when to stop exercising because of potential risks inherent in exercising, eg: going beyond pain. Ethical prudence in anything involving the body whether it be an exercise program, nutritional counseling, life-style changes, etc. is of key importance. Once nicely relaxed with this read, I ventured on into reading about other key factors to exercise: food and motivation; which were conservatively and effectively written. Author James Atkinson then begins with and explanation of resistance training, explaining what it is and making the excellent point that it is “sadly overlooked” in its relationship to not just building muscles but burning calories. He then explains cardio training, otherwise known as aerobic exercise. The actual six-week plan looks like a comprehensive, easy, and doable program with photographic explanations of the how-to at the back of the book, which is needed and effective. Lastly, the author makes a disclaimer at the end of the read that this book “was not proof read or published by a professional body” which might turn some off because there was no medical or “professional” backer supporting the claims etc. What the author is merely pointing out is that he had no help with the publishing, marketing, design, or editing. He is in fact, by virtue of his experience as a trainer, the expert writing from that which is not dogma or supposition but rather what he lives. It is a useful and well written exercise book.
