  • Consider this as an alternative for cardio if you want to focus on upper body and/or have knee or back issues.
Style: SkiErg only
As a former owner of a Concept2 Rower, I was eager to believe this would be a good purchase. Luckily, my expectations have been surpassed. Due to overuse, height and fluctuating weight, I have some knee issues, as well as a disc and sciatic nerve issue in my back. Even the rower I had caused some problems with my knee. The option to avoid jogging (my former favorite exercise) has been invaluable. With the use of a stool or chair, I can literally do an hour of cardio without using my knee at all. Though if I rehab my knee enough - I can choose to engage it more. Which is what is great about this machine - it is very adaptable. My girlfriend has a torn rotator cuff and does not experience the pain she did when trying to use the rower. This product is mobile, light and like all other products from Concept2, very well built. Unlike the rower, the footprint is smaller if you have ceilings high enough - even with the stand and is ready to use at any time - requiring no setup. It's not as loud as the rower. I would strongly recommend this product to people who need or desire adaptive cardio. In many ways it is better than a recumbent bike, another one of my favorite machines for straightforward cardio - because it is adaptable and lighter. You can use this machine at any fitness level, unlike the rower, which is a bit much if you are very out of shape. I can't say this enough - this is the most adaptable piece of cardio equipment I have seen. You can stand, sit, kneel, alternate legs, arms etc...and get a good workout. You can choose to have a relaxing long sitting workout or go very intense. If you are looking for an indoor cardio workout, strongly consider this. ... show more

  • Concept 2 does it again!
Style: SkiErg only
Wow is the first thing I can say about this machine. I've owned a Concept 2 rowing erg for close to 4 years now and it is a fantastic piece of equipment. I've wanted the SkiErg for a couple of years now and kept delaying pulling the trigger on ordering. I'm regretting that decision 1000%. This machine is absolutely amazing. The workout is tremendous and the perfect compliment to the rower. I would suggest viewing form videos either on Concept 2's site as it does take a bit to get used to the motion for someone that has never skied so as myself. I bought the base as well as the unit itself and found videos on installation and it was seamless and very easy. If you have a second person for a couple of steps it would be beneficial but not required. I did it myself with no help and took about 35 minutes or so. The videos are very clear step by step. In the machine being more vertical it honestly doesn't have that big of a footprint as far as storage other than of course needing to have the clearance for the height but honestly it's not even as tall as my rower when standing upright. The workout is fantastic as with the rower you can set your damper setting, stick with around 3-5 starting out and really watch your form and you will feel it. There are different ways of people doing it with the butterfly type motion which is popular in crossfit or essentially squatting more in the end portion which isn't the greatest form per videos but as a change of pace will really fry your legs. I honestly love this thing and so glad that I got it, cannot recommend enough. ... show more

  • One of a kind upper body cardio machine!
Style: SkiErg only
This is the first review I’ve written in years, but I believe not enough people know about this amazing cardio machine and many can benefit from it. We excessively use our legs for all forms of cardio until our knees and ankles give out and this is a great alternative that everyone should look into. If you don’t have a strong upper body to start, you will also see major results on your back, triceps, and shoulders as an added benefit. For example if you run on the treadmill for 30 minutes, you probably shouldn’t follow it up with 30 minutes of jumping rope, or play basketball and damage your joints even if you have the energy and will power to do it. Or you work on your feet all day, this can be a great way to do cardio without much stress on your lower body joints. Here is 2 potential negatives that you can fix yourself. If you do a 10k almost everyday prepare to have blisters and calis on your hands. I tried all kinds of workout gloves but the breathable underarmour golf gloves worked the best and I highly recommend them. Second, don’t go all out as soon as you get this if your lower back muscles are not well trained. I highly recommend doing lower back extensions to strengthen your back if you’re going to use this everyday for 40-45 minutes. Also, buy the wooden base. Yeah it’s kinda expensive but do you really want to nail a workout machine that you pull with all your might everyday to the wall and potentially damage your property? I did and I’m very happy with it, plus I moved it around a few times as well. If anyone from Concept2 is reading this, here is a feature recommendation! Please add much more resistance so I can keep getting stronger while I do cardio. I even thought about adding a resistance band tot the handles to achieve this. Bow flex has something like that but their products are a bit gimmicky and I trust Concept2 more in the long run. For anyone considering the rower, that is a great machine as well but I totally prefer this. The rower involves the lower body quite a bit more and you have to use a cushioned seat to protect your tailbone. I hope this review helped someone who was desperately looking for an upper body cardio machine like me. ... show more

  • Challenging exercise machine with plenty of benefits
Style: SkiErg only
This is an excellent addition to my home gym. I have a plethora of exercise equipment at home that I incorporate into my work out routines. I've worked out for the past 34 years on a consistent basis. However, as I'm getting older, I need to increase my cardio and workout variation to reduce my risk of injury. Adding the Concept2 SkiErg has revved up my cardio work outs with an added benefit I did not expect. After using this machine for about 4-5 weeks, my max reps of chin ups improved from 12 reps to a 20 rep max without rest. I did not expect that at all! Also, I am receiving a great core work out that even involves my quadriceps. This is a keeper and one of the best machines I've purchased. PROS: * Solid machine with high quality parts * Great work out * Upper body & Core work out and some legs * Small foot print ideal for limited space * Anaerobic & Aerobic work outs * Adjustable resistance CONS * Assembly was not well designed. Some of the bolts are placed in awkward positions requiring you to contort your hands * Must use the floor stand or mount to the wall * Potential for repetitive motion injury (if you are not varying your workouts) ... show more

  • Last piece of the cardio puzzle
Style: SkiErg only
Say goodbye to your airbike, rower, and treadmill. This is the end-all, be-all of cardio and conditioning. (Don’t really get rid of them because they have their purpose too). The first thing you’ll want to do when getting this machine is to learn the proper form—full extension at the top, driving down through the heels like you’re pushing ski poles into the ground. If done correctly, this will work just about every muscle from head to toe. There are many alternative motions you can do with it as well. Slowly build your tolerance and push yourself with this beast of a machine. Great cross training tool! The shipping took a few weeks on this, but that is understandable seeing as this is a very popular home gym option now. The product came very well packaged in the factory box and took about 20 minutes to assemble. I opted for the wall mount instead of the stand to save room, but would definitely recommend the stand if you have the space. I’ve used this machine with the base at a local gym and it is nice if you want the machine to be portable. Excellent product, incredible workout. ... show more

  • Phenomenal machine, as long as you learn proper form
Style: SkiErg only
For the last few months, I've had this and a rower and I've loved them both. I generally don't use just one machine for a full workout. I'll do several 'sprints' to 500m on here, and several sprints to 500m on the rower (with rest pauses between, I'll admit) until I hit 45 or 60 or even 90 minutes depending on the day. I was familiar with rowing and knew what to expect there. I'd read accounts of the SkiErg being an absolute beast and I can say that now that I've had time to adequately put it through its paces, I absolutely agree with those accounts. I've also moved from one home to another, and they machine survived the move without anything coming loose or any noticeable decrease in performance. I enthusiastically encourage others to buy these for their home gyms. It's pricey, but if you have the money, it's worth every cent. ... show more

  • Just what I needed
Style: SkiErg only
The only machine better for intervals is a Erg rower, unless you have a knee injury you're recovering from (thanks, extremely incompetent crossfit coach for better way to train pistols...), still sour. I might have given a 3.5 stars, due to the fact screen that protect fan was off track and was not just a simple adjustment since the screen was inside the opening on the bottom. The installation was simple for me, I leveled off top mount bracket, marked holes drilled studs and bolted into studs with cordless impact driver. If your going to have stall mats around SkiErg, lay them down first and set machine on top of mats. If you do not possess some carpentry skills, buy the stand, you'll save time and money from wall repairs. I use for sprint, medium time/distance intervals and long distance recovery, my Partner likes it and uses it, she had an eleptical trainer which never was used, which is what they are good for in my opinion. If you want a machine to mimic skate skiing, this is not it,nor what is designed for. ... show more

  • Wall mounters - Beware floating drywall! Wall mounters - Beware floating drywall!
Style: SkiErg only
I had the perfect spot in the garage picked out for wall-mounting this snazzy torture instrument, so I made my purchase. Just enough space. A few days later, installation time... Great, comes with a nice kit -> instructions in the back, an adapter plate for the top at 7 feet, with a pair of 16" separated holes, 3/8" bolts and washers to match, and it also secures an inch from the bottom, centered, with another pair of bolts at 6" separation, and a pair of 1" wall spacers. Mark the top, drill a 2" deep pilot hole for each. On to the base. What's this? There's an air-pocket in the wall exactly lined up with one of my ski-erg base's mounting holes? Apparently, my drywall is secured to a standard wood frame, that sits on top a layer of something, on top a layer of plywood on top of cement floor, and ... there's a 1" - 3" air-gap down there every couple feet, and I hit the jackpot between these two studs. So, I need to move over one. Crap. 3 hours later, I've rearranged enough priceless junk to accommodate the 16" move. Finally, secured to the wall, bolts hitting wood x 4 - it's solid as a rock. Epilogue - if this is your first time ever on this machine, and you're in great shape from the rowing erg, do NOT get the dumb idea to try a 2K time trial. Especially after you've just rearranged the garage, and humidity is 90%. Watch some "Dark Horse skierg" YouTubes BEFORE-hand. Contemplate what you've gotten yourself into, then EASE into it. That is, unless self-annihilation is your thing. In that case, well...Johnny Ringo, you've found your huckleberry. Note - I've only had this a week, but give it 5 stars because : 1) It came with everything needed for installing as described, and works fine so far. 2) I'm expecting the same quality as the Concept 2 rowing machine. Otherwise, It would get a 4 right now, and I'd need a year with no issues to up it to a 5. Edit - JAN 2021 - 17 months later, including the entire year that shall not be named, zero issues to report. Correction - one day I realized the noise from the flywheel had dramatically changed. "Uh oh, what's wrong? " It turned out to be a big piece of cardboard had gotten too close. Moved that 6 inches over - all back to normal. Photos added . 1) Floating drywall in attached garage, typical air-gaps to watch out for 2) Upgrades : Pre-install - 7/16" carpet pad remnant : i) cut to size to designate the workout space ii) keep ski-erg base from direct contact with cement floor at exterior wall where rain/moisture creeps in iii) use barefoot if desired (without freezing feet) iv) likely lose some power due to squishy surface - hey, I didn't have a spare hard-rubber mat. Post install: PM5 plastic bag (included with purchase) to save the monitor from rivers of sweat. Poster depicting the abs you will get. Rusty chain hung from garage door track to enhance the barbarism. ... show more
