  • Winds the yarn perfectly.
Size: Large Ball Winder
If you crochet, this is an excellent tool to help keep your yarn from tangling. Very durable and easy to use.

  • Loud but effective
Size: Large Ball Winder
Winder arrived in perfect condition and couldn't have been easier to set up, although if you've not used one before it might take a second to figure out how to work it. When it says high speed, it is NOT kidding. I can go through a 6 ounce ball in about 8-10 minutes, if that. Depends on how many tangles the yarn gets itself into. The arm that holds the yarn wiggles a bit, but its fine if you get the bolt tight enough and make sure the arm goes UNDER the washer, not just the wingnut. Overall very sturdy, I've gone through easily 30 balls of yarn in about a week and it's not showing any signs of stress. Some of the gears are plastic, which disappointed me a bit, but its very sturdy plastic and they aren't thin or anything. It fits my desk nicely as well. the only yarn i have yet to try with it is super thick stuff. I have some lion brand hometown i haven't tried on it because i don't want to break anything, but i DID try it with size 10 crochet thread, which works better than you'd think. Still have to see if it'll take size 40 though. Now for the only downside I've found, it's noisy. Not earth-shatteringly noisy, but it makes quite a loud vibrating/rumbling noise into the table. For what its worth, my family isn't terribly bothered by it when I've got my bedroom door closed, but for anyone in the same room it's quite loud. Overall I'm very happy. Not going to claim it's the best out there, because i know there are more expensive, quieter models, but this one works really well for the price. ... show more

  • Nice but has some flaws Nice but has some flaws
Size: Large Ball Winder
Overall I am very happy that I can wind a whole average skein with this winder but I will say it can sometimes take a few minutes because you have to hold the yarn in just the right position to have it wound tight and nicely. If there’s too much resistance (which it doesn’t take a lot) from the yarn you’ll get a quick stop and have to pull a few strands from the skein then continue and repeate as needed. It’s a very heavy duty winder so I would recommend not attaching it to a table you like because it will leave scratches and indents and the first few uses you will see metal debris from the gears grinding together. Overall it can take some work to use but I do LOVE the size cake I get at the end and how much easier it has made storing yarn! ... show more

  • Works very well once you take the time to tweak it and learn how to use it.
Size: Large Ball Winder
It's loud, it's kinda cheaply made, and the packaging it is shipped in isn't great so it shows up looking pretty used and abused. In fact I thought that it was used and returned for being defective when it arrived but the company was great about shipping me another one in a timely manner and when that one arrived it looked just as beat up and used, so it I think it was just a lack of protection in the packaging. For the price, it works so well and is indeed very fast. It does take some tweaks and has a learning curve, but if you take the time to bend arms and figure out which way to spin it so that you can go really fast without the bobbin type part popping off, you'll be set and the only thing that will slow you down is the skein of yarn itself if it's one that is prone to tangling. I used a can cozie to put between it and the chair I used to spin it on and that both protects the wood and keeps the winder from wiggling around and coming loose. Any rubbery type material should work, like the non-skid stuff you line shelves with that you can get at the dollar store. If you can afford to spend twice the amount or more, I'd pass this and go for the higher end one like a Stanwood, but if you are like me and need a budget friendly winder and don't mind a little noise and putting a little effort into some tweaks and are smart enough to just wind the handle the opposite way if the middle part pops off, then you can't go wrong with this one. I had over 7 milk crates worth of yarn wound up in my free time over a few days, this thing is FAST and it definitely accommodates very large skeins. The customer service was great and if you have any issues they seem happy to help, as I said, they were quick to send me a new one when I thought the first one was someone elses' reject that was sent back for not working. ... show more

  • durability and a must for any serious crocheter
Size: Large Ball Winder
i bought this winder about 18 months ago and wound about 100 skeins of yarn ( if not more!) and i just wore it out! i have just purchased my second one and now i figure i can’t live with out one. i am no spring chicken and winding yarn the old way was too hard on my hands. i wish i had bought one sooner. it is heavy duty and quiet and it really works fast. don’t be afraid to invest in one even for the casual crocheter or knitter. pulling the yarn from the middle of the cake is so much nicer than chasing the ball around that the kitty stole. the cakes don’t roll around and are not much fun to chase. the only two issues i had was keeping the starting end in the groove so i pilfered some of my great granddaughters pigtail rubber bands to hold them in place and when i was done i put the cake in a baggy to keep it safe and clean ( the final end wanted to flap in the breeze). it is easy to assemble and use but the yarn guide wingnut likes to come loose so i keep a pair of needle nose pliers handy to tighten it occasionally. never write reviews but this one i felt i had to!! happy caking ... show more

  • It’s okay. A few issues. It’s okay. A few issues.
Size: Large Ball Winder
This winder overall is very sturdy and strong. It can be hard to crank and you really need a strong base to attach it to. I tried to attach it to my tv table but it was too strong for it, it jumped and wobbled everywhere. As for the winding itself… a few problems: first it works best on thicker yarns like a true 4 weight or thicker. It is horrendous on anything thin or silky, like Caron simply soft. The pink cake in the photos is simply soft, as you can see the yarn slips over the cake and bunches around the shaft making a big mess. Also I don’t think this winder would cake up anything over 8 ounces. I caked up a Herchners 8 ounce worsted and it was to the edge of the base as you can see in the photo. Also I wound it pretty tight because I suspected it wouldn’t fit. Had I held the yarn any looser it would not of fit the entire ball. My biggest complaint is that it makes a mess of thinner yarns and is hard to crank. I tried loosening the nuts from the flyer as recommended in the trouble shooting guide but then it made the flyer too loose and would hit the table after some time winding. If you use mostly worsted weight yarns or thicker I would definitely recommend this winder but remember it takes a little muscle to wind this thing. ... show more

  • A very nice, mid-range yarn winder that isn't appreciated enough.
Size: Large Ball Winder
Okay, bad stuff up front: it's loud. Put on your headphones and listen to some music or a talk show. on the bottom of the plate that attaches to the table is a screw-head that will put a divot in your table. Put something under it or on it (I just folded up a spare yarn wrapper and stuffed it under there). The good stuff: It holds up to 7 ounces, so it will hold all but the largest balls of yarn without cutting. Spend enough time with the yarn and you'll know when to cut it off to make evenly sized cakes. The hole in the cakes close on their own when you pull them out, and if you fold up the wrapper and hold it against the center of the bobbin as you pull you can keep the wrapper in the cake. This thing is FAST. A large ball of Bernat Blanket yarn usually takes at least an hour for me to wind into a cake by hand, and the winder took about 6 minutes to make 2 cakes out of the ball. Addressing the flyer issue people are complaining about: the flyer can be adjusted by twisting it. Keep adjusting until you get it going. General use notes: you do have to actually hold the yarn up, and at the beginning of the ball pull the yarn out. Having a yarn swift and skeins as opposed to machine wound balls sold in fabric stores might be better. Alternatively, get someone to hold the yarn and pull it as you crank. If the yarn you start with is more than 7 ounces, don't try to overfill the winder. The gears WILL eat your yarn as any yarn winder will. Cut it and keep going. You can use magic knots and nobody will ever know! Bottom Line: it's a very nice mid-range ball winder. Go cheaper and get plastic pieces of cow dung, go nicer and shell out a car payment. I really like mine, and the crafters group I started like it as well. ... show more

  • A must-have accessory for the Addi Express machines
Size: Large Ball Winder
I’ve never owned a yarn ball winder before this one, so I can’t compare it to one with fewer gears, but I love this one. It whizzes along quickly and smoothly. There was a little bit of squeak when I first got it, but I coated all the moving parts in sewing machine oil. No more squeaking. I’ve made yarn cakes out of every skein of yarn in my house, and it took no time at all. They pull so easily from the center, exactly as I had hoped. I bought it to use in conjunction with my Addi Express knitting machine. I’m so glad I did. The yarn cakes feed beautifully. If I need to undo something, this makes it so quick and easy. I just slot the end of the yarn in the yarn ball winder and wind it back into a yarn cake. It saves loads of time and frustration. I’m so glad I bought this. The seller is worth mentioning too. I received a defective winder at first. There was a small part that needed replacing. I contacted them and asked if they could ship a replacement part to me, and they promptly sent me a new winder. Super helpful and friendly. ... show more
