My contract is up at the end of the season, and with playoffs starting, I have to be on my best behaviour. Keep my head down and respect the press when they shove their microphones beneath my nose. One bad call and I’m the poster boy for poor decisions.I haven’t seen my childhood best friend since the day her father betrayed me and she broke my heart. Now, eight years later, she’s back. And she’s my fake girlfriend for the next two months. Some wounds never heal, and the moment I see Braxton Heights, I know mine have not. • Fake Dating, Childhood friends, “It’s Always Been You”, Hockey Romance
OMG THE MOMENT HAS FINALLY ARRIVED! YASSSSS! This was one of my most highly anticipated reads, and with all the teasers that Hannah posted I was brimming with excitement and ready to dive into Maddox and Braxton’s story! Reunited with my favorites from Oakley, Ava, to TYLER BATEMAN! Gracie,Cooper, and some of the other children, yeah I was over the moon happy at being thrusted back into this world of hockey, as well as being introduced to the second generation of the children. With hockey galore, reunited old friends to enemies to lovers, and a whole brunch of goodness oozing from the pages, I was extremely happy and it was the highlight of my life while reading! The last time I “saw” Braxton and Maddox was when they were teenagers in, “Vital Blindside”, which is part of the Swift Hat Trick series, which by the way I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND READING! Ahem, as I was saying, Braxton and Maddox were best friends since they were kids, always together, but something happened that caused them to drift apart. Years later, Maddox now twenty-six and one of the most successful hockey players on the Vancouver Warriors team, he was famously known, and focused on his career. Braxton, also twenty-six was now a veterinarian with her own clinic and spending her days treating animals like she always dreamed of. Braxton and Maddox hadn’t seen each other in a few years, but with the tabloids spinning a false story about Maddox, as well as Braxton’s father taking the opportunity to try to ruin Maddox’s career, it seemed like the only viable option was to get Braxton to help Maddox out… by pretending to fake date him! Maddox and Braxton had to pretend to fake date in order to help with Maddox’s image/ reputation, and with that it seemed inevitable that they would have to spend time together, getting to know the new changes in their lives, etc. With the belief that Braxton was part of her father’s schemes in the past, Maddox dealt with trust issues, especially when it came to Braxton. That being said, when it comes to fake dating we all KNOW the real feelings were bound to come out, and my goodness did I have lots of fun seeing Maddox and Braxton get all their feelings out in the open between the tension filled moments they shared that had me gasping! I will say that I loved seeing the flashbacks to when Maddox and Braxton were teenagers! Like there were plenty of amazing moments one of my favorites being when Maddox showed the framed picture of Braxton he had in his room, and WHAT HE SAID TO HER IN THAG MOMENT! OMG! I LOVED IT! THIS MAN WAS OBSESSED WITH BRAXTON AHHH! I LOVED IT! Safe to say, I was swooning and adoring the inner thoughts Maddox and Braxton had about each other in their minds. Like, come on, you couldn’t expect me not to fangirl over the things Braxton thought about Maddox or even how Maddox went out of his way to spend any and all time with Braxton NO MATTER WHAT?? (Sigh) yeah I was a sucker for all of the sweetness that was embedded in this story. *me swooning and twirling around with glee. From the moment I started reading this book, I knew right away I was in love. I mean, even before reading I had a feeling this was going to a hit, and the way Maddox and Braxton were together was phenomenal. I’m an absolute sucker when I read about a fictional man being protective and possessive over his woman, and that was exactly how Maddox was with Braxton. Even more than that, Maddox was so obsessed with Braxton that I loved reading the things he said to her such as, Maddox telling IN DETAIL just how beautiful Braxton was. A lot of the things Maddox said and did was highlighted through his actions and dang, he kept raising my expectations to the point my jaw dropped, and was blown away. Braxton was such a lovely character, and to see her at odds with her confidence at times made me sad for her, but with Maddox as her own personal hype person, she felt comfortable, at ease, and downright sexy with the way he was eyeballing her, and wanting her all to himself. Together, Braxton and Maddox were chef’s kiss, and I was equally obsessed with the both of them. Yes this review just keeps going and going, but in my defense… THIS BOOK IS JUST SO FLIPPING FANTASTIC I CAN’T CONTAIN MYSELF! (Sigh) just when I finished reading such a swoon worthy moment, I read something else and next thing I know I’m having to momentarily take a pause in order to fangirl and scream to my delight! Example A) MADDOX’S TATTOO! Example B) THE DIRTY TALK COMING OUT OF MADDOX’S MOUTH (GASP) HAVE MERCY! And example C) The banter between Braxton and Maddox was the perfect combination of their friendship and now romantic relationship. *slow claps, feeling so overjoyed. Wow, this exceeded my expectations in the best way possible. Maddox and Braxton were the best, and again I absolutely adored both of them. From childhood friends with long held crushes on one another to finding their way back to each other with a fake dating agreement, Maddox and Braxton were bound to end up together because, they were each other’s soulmates. I loved the relationship between Maddox and Braxton from when they were younger all innocent and in love to seeing them as full on adults filled with passion, desire, and an overflowing amount of love bursting between them. Maddox was every bit of the man just as his parents the loving Oakley and Ava. Maddox was equal parts protective, strong, possessive, and all kinds of sexy that I wasn’t expecting, but definitely loved. Braxton was so sweet and lovable that I could see myself being friends with her, and her personality shined through out the story. This book had so many amazing qualities that I legitimately cannot express how fantastic they were. I loved the ending, and of course THE EPILOGUES WERE MAGICAL! (Sigh) I won’t spoil it, but just know when you read them, you’ll know why I was all happy and giddy and feeling the love as I read Maddox and Braxton living their best lives. That being said, I loved this story, and as always I’m in love with Hannah’s books. I’m not a sports girly, but with authors like Hannah, I’ve grown to wanting to learn about hockey in real life. Cheers to an amazing book, and to Maddox and Braxton getting their happily ever after! ... show more

  • Love always wins
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS. READ WITH CAUTION Imagine spending seven years of your life building up your public image. Even longer to work to a point where you can have a public image. It all comes crashing down in an instant when trying to do the right thing. The public doesn't care about the truth, only whatever the juiciest explanation is. This is the story of Maddox Hutton, a hockey player trying to live up to his father's legacy. He gets a call from his sister at 2am that their other brother is at a sleazy bar in town and needs to be picked up. The two brothers wait too long to make their exit, giving enough time for an angry man to approach them and demand money from Noah. This exchange and Maddox's subsequent beating is a PR nightmare. Enter Braxton Heights, former best friend and current vet/shelter owner. She has an adoption event coming up, and it's the perfect thing to help Maddox fix his image. The problem? The two haven't spoken in 8 years. The even bigger problem? They have to fake date. This was a sweet story of a second chance "it's always been you." After briefly meeting our duo in the Swift Hat-Trick series, this book gives glimpses of their first 13 years of friendship while showing us where they are in the present. Every few chapters, the story jumps back in time to some of the important highlights of their time as friends. There's background to show how close they were and not just listening to the characters say it. The thing this story does best is come full circle, even on the little details. For example, <spoiler>Braxton and Maddox meet for the first time in 8 years in front of Hades's cage. Throughout the story, we learn where the name comes from and see his growth. We end with our lovely couple adopting him, coming full circle from the conversation they had as teenagers about their future dog.</spoiler> Something else this story does well is teenage angst. At 23, it's frustrating to understand how neither character picked up on their feelings for one another. However, the reader has to put their brain back into their teenage body and remember what it felt like to have a crush in high school, especially on a close friend. It's terrifying to not know if someone is saying and acting out of friendship or romantic interest. And these two make it clear that they have been very close since kindergarten. Another highlight, though not important to this book specifically, is the information given about the couples in the later books and the little hints towards the meaning of their titles. Forgetting the fact that it's a second generation series and all these characters have been introduced as kids, the future couples are introduced just enough to get readers interested for their books. <spoiler> Adalyn wants to travel Europe, but has Cooper been asked to go with her? Or is she going alone? Is she even going at all? Has she always had a crush on Cooper? Or do feelings develop throughout the book? How did Noah and Tiny become so close, and why is he moving to Toronto? Does his music career happen?</spoiler> There are three points that felt weak, but it's important to stress that they're not major. <spoiler>The first is the chapter from Oakley's point of view. I know it's meant to be a throwback and insight, but it may have worked better if the reader found out about the blackmail when Braxton does. The entire book is spent only knowing what Braxton and Maddox know, and this almost felt like a random deviation to appease fans of the first book. The second thing is the fact that Braxton's sister just disappears. A big deal is made about the fact that they've always been close, and she even asks Braxton to meet up with her again after brunch. But after the hockey game, she's just gone. No mention of her at the wedding in the epilogue (unless I missed it). The last part is how Braxton's car being broken into is just dropped until it's relevant again. For a couple who is great at communication, it was surprising to not even see a conversation about it. Additionally, it's not mentioned if she filed a police report until, again, it comes up chapters later. It just almost felt like an afterthought for something that ends up being a major detail.</spoiler> Overall, this is Hannah Cowan's best book to date. It's clear that her writing has grown since her first book, and is continuing to grow. Things are well thought out and nothing feels too far-fetched. Their love is apparent and doesn't just magically appear in 3 chapters as it does in many romance novels. Braxton and Maddox have great communication skills and are a couple that genuinely deserves to have the audience root for them. This is a good sign that the next four stories will hopefully be even better than this one. ... show more

  • Hockey Romance done right
Man, is Hannah a fantastic hockey and romance writer. I loved seeing both the romantic side, but the realities and realism of the hockey world. Maddox and Braxton were childhood sweethearts until decisions that Braxton and her dad made caused almost irreparable harm to Maddox's career in hockey and caused Braxton to move across the country. Years later, they meet again after some bad press results in Maddox needing to clear his image up with a PR relationship. Maddox and Braxton are the definition of childhood soulmates. Even through the time separated, their connection remained buried within them, waiting for it's chance to come alive again. Even through the pain, there was no hate, only deep love. As Maddox and Braxton work through their history, their connection becomes deeper and deeper until their fake relationship becomes real. And the nugget that Hannah left for us in this book? Absolute perfection. ... show more

  • Screaming!
My favorite Hannah Cowan book so far! "It's hard to date when the only woman you want, you can't have." (swoon dramatically) Maddox Hutton. What an icon! This man is so fine. His whole life revolves around Braxton, even when she isn't there. Maddox would give up everything for her, and I love how he left his hockey game to be with her at the hospital. I couldn't believe how forgiving he was when they started fake dating because it was almost like a switch, where he went from hating her to loving her again. When I talk about how I want to date a fictional man, I will be bringing up Maddox. Braxton Heights was a nice change to have as a plus-size fmc. She was loved for who she was, and Maddox's body positivity talks/support was like a breath of fresh air. I had to highlight some quotes from Maddox because of all the warm feelings I felt reading them. If you couldn't tell, I love Maddox. I can't wait for Her Greatest Adventure! ... show more

  • Maddox & Braxton
I was one of the lucky people picked to receive an ARC copy of this beautiful book. I am so so grateful to have been chosen because this book was just absolute perfection. I cannot get over how perfect everyone was. Not only did we get to see Oakley and Ava again but also Tyler & Gracie along with all the beautiful children and family they created. Swift Hat Trilogy was an ultimate comfort series for me and I am so happy to say this second generation series will get to continue that comfort for me. I was so in love with Maddox and Braxton from the start. The flashbacks to their childhood and how much they changed and how they came back together was so amazing. Maddox is this perfect man who has been obsessed with Braxton since kindergarten and as soon as he gets the chance to have her again he makes sure he will NEVER lose her again. Braxton is this beautiful, curvy girl who has never forgiven herself for the mistake she made years ago but when she gets the chance to make it all right again she does it without a second thought because she loves Maddox so much. The way their relationship was nowhere near fake even from the start was just intoxicating!!!!!! The way these two thought they could go through with a fake relationship with no repercussions was so funny. I love how they both slowly broke down and just opened up right away because they knew it was never gonna change and they were gonna be together always…and forever. I am so so so so in love with this book, these characters, this whole universe it makes my heart so so warm. I have always loved Hannah's books but she OUTDID herself with Her Greatest Mistake. This book releases January 23rd and you will not wanna miss it!!! 5⭐️♾️ for Maddox and Braxton ... show more

This book is special to me! I saw it on tiktok before it came out, and continuously checked amazon until it finally released. I read this before I read the Swift-Hat Trick trilogy, so I feel attached to this set of characters even more than their parents. This made it even more fun to go back and read the original trilogy first. I am hooked on their entire universe. I cannot wait for the rest of this series to come out. Hannah Cowan does a great job creating characters you can fall in love with, especially Maddox. He might be my favorite male character of all time. ... show more

  • 5 Star Read
5/5 Stars 3/5 Spice Tropes: Second Gen Series Hockey Romance Fake Dating Second Chance Romance Childhood Best Friends to Lovers Full Figure FMC eARC Review I legit loved this book. I wasn’t sure if I’d like it going in. Yes, it’s a hockey romance which is my favorite but it’s also childhood best friends to lovers & second chance & those are really hard to do well. I’d read Lucky Hit before this & it was pretty good but Hannah nailed this one. Maddox & Braxton are best friends from age 5-18 when family drama & bad choices lead to them separating & not speaking for eight years. But when those same issues come up again Braxton is back in Maddox’s life for a scheme to solve all his PR issues in his pro hockey career. The chemistry is still there & the two cannot help but fall right back into their old feelings. Navigating the past & present becomes a journey & when they finally get an HEA it feels so good. I enjoyed Maddox’s swoony inner dialogue & his dirty mouth 🥵. Braxton was a well developed FMC & I liked how realistic & relatable she was. This is definitely a five star read for me. **You should definitely read Maddox’s parents book - Lucky Hit before reading this one. Watching Oakley become a dad is 🥰🥰 ... show more

  • TOP FAVORITE READ OF THE YEAR AND ITS ONLY JANUARY!
Wow, just wow. Hannah exceeded every single one of my expectations and then some with Braxton and Maddox’s story. I don’t think there are enough words to properly describe how much I LOVED this book🥹❤️ the love these two have for each other was raw, real and so true. To summarize, Maddox and Braxton have been friends since forever, but they were both in love with each other and didn’t know it. When Maddox is set to enter the draft at 18, something happens that blows everything up and Braxton flees her home, leaving her only love and her family behind. Eight years later she’s back, and Maddox needs her help to save his image, and what better way than to forge a fake dating plan, but somewhere along the way old flames get rekindled and they realize their love for each other only got stronger throughout the years. This book left me on the floor, crying my heart out (in a good way!😭❤️). These characters go through so much, fighting for their love against all odds thrown at them, and it made me so proud to see them come out stronger. This book will forever hold a special place in my heart, I cannot wait to see what Hannah has in store for the rest of the series 😭❤️ the little teasers in the book had me SCREAMING!!! IF THERE IS ONE BOOK REC THAT YOU WOULD TAKE FROM ME, PLEASE!! PLEASE!! LET IT BE THIS ONE!! SUCH A COMFORT READ!!!!🥹😩🙌🏼 ... show more

  • A love like brax and maddox >>
This book had me on a chokehold from beginning to end. I can't explain how deeply I felt everything while reading (from sadness to hurt to happiness to awe). Brax and Dox are childhood best friends who fell apart, and haven't heard from or talked to one another in 8 years. Its a story of pain and loss, but also of rekindled love and bonds that live forever. I cried, I laughed, and I had such an amazing time reading. I genuinely think so many people can enjoy this book as a standalone. I highly recommend HGM. I’ve had all of my friends (who haven’t read any previous Hannah Cowan books) read them, and they enjoyed it sooo much!! This is 100% Hannah’s best book to date, and after reading the whole SHT series, it has been incredible watching her writing grow. Hannah Cowan truly outdid herself with Her Greatest Mistake (PS. The amount of highlights and annotations I have dedicated to just Oakley mentions is insane lol...) ... show more

  • Another win for Hannah Cowan
🌟- 5 / 🌶- 3.5 Dual POV & HEA 🇵🇱🇴🇹 & 🇷🇪🇻🇮🇪🇼 Maddox and Braxton were best friends until they weren't. One bad decision threw away twelve years of friendship. Now a second generation NHL star with a reputation on the line, only one person can help Maddox save face… the girl from his past. The hurt you could feel coming from both Dox and Brax was heart wrenching. Watching them work through their past issues with each other and move into the fake dating - but really - actually dating stage of their relationship was so fun to read. I loved how obsessed and protective he was of Braxton even when he pretended not to be. Having the MMC be a virgin was really awesome. I loved how he saved himself for her and was surprised when it was revealed he hadn't been with anyone else. I also loved everything about Braxton being a vet, her compassionate side really showed through everything she did from work to dealing with broody Maddox. I’m a huge fan of the Swift Hat Trick trilogy and seeing the second generation of characters and how they turned out was so fun. While intense - you can really see the positive traits that Maddox got from his parents. ----- Loving: ✸plus size rep ✸ all the angst ✸ flashbacks ----- 🇹🇷🇴🇵🇪🇸 ✸ enemies to lovers ✸ obsessed MMC ✸ second chances ✸ slow burn ... show more

Reading anything Hannah writes is smooth sailing. Thank you for this ARC. Maddox was… no IS the perfect man. His loyalty & priorities are set in a straight line, no curves or bumps anywhere. Maddox had me in a chokehold, with his sweet words & Perfect Dirty talk, no complaints here my man. My Sweet sweet Braxton, you are also a dirty girl 🤭🤭 “I shake my head. “No I’m begging you too”” 😭 She would do anything for her DOX and he would do for her. I love her shyness and but quick tongue. Couldn’t ask for anyone better for Maddox than her. Also, let’s talk about how much Anna needs her own story ““Well, that just proves how little you know about the women in this family because we get vicious when we’re hungry. And I’m damn near ravished,” Anna growls.” I love love her! I also loved seeing everyone from past and future stories! Thank you again Hannah! You goddess! ... show more

This is the best book Hannah has written. It was amazing. Maddox and Braxton were perfect together. True soulmates. Childhood best friend’s who lost contact after Braxton made a mistake. The way they found they’re way back to each other just made me so happy. Braxton is a veterinarian who owns a clinic and Maddox is a professional hockey player. This was a second generation series and I loved getting to read all about the familiar characters! Also the spice was immaculate.😏 BUT THE FLUFF WAS GOOD. Maddox is obsessed with Braxton! The side character’s really brought the story to a different level! I can’t wait to see how the rest of this series is going to go!
