This Hen & Hart version pulley lamp is pretty unique in what it provides. As formal lamps radiate vertical this lamp moves the light horizontal across the floor space resonating. It sits about 33-34” in height and is reallly sturdy in assembly. Beautiful quality and yes it is a maintenance - dusting may keep it, but adjusting to the life around it is the maintainer. Aesthetically, this is the best lamp I have ever seen in my life, 10/10, I love this lamp more than life itself. Functionally, I have to say I hate that the switch to turn it on is so high up. If it were located at about the height of the lowest of the three gears, that would be perfect. But instead it’s right above the shade, which is one of the highest points on the lamp. I know you can adjust the lamp to make the shade hang lower, but I like how it looks when it’s higher. I have to GET UP OFF THE COUCH to turn on the light. I know. I live a life of great hardship. The light quality is also somehow unsatisfying, and I don’t think it’s just because of the lightbulb. I think because the shade is metal or some otherwise completely opaque material, the light is very circumscribed. It doesn’t feel like an ambient glow, like my cloth-shaded lamps. It’s objectively warm-colored but it manages to feel cold. It casts deep shadows on my armchair. I am now buying a second lamp (a small table lamp) to supplement the light, that is how unsatisfying this lamp's light is. But even if the lamp had no light at all, I would just treat it as a sculpture because it is so aesthetically pleasing. I was worried the shade would look too small, but it’s kind of huge (in a good way). I was going to put artwork on the wall behind my armchair, but now I can’t because the lamp takes up all the space, but that’s okay because the lamp itself is art. The lamp has a bigger personality than I do. This is the lamp’s house now and I am merely the lamp’s roommate. Everyone describes this lamp as “industrial,” but personally I think it also goes well with my antique carved wooden table. I got the brass version, and it kind of has a vibe like “wood-paneled study, leather couches, drinking port” but quirkier/steampunkier. I saw some reviews describing this lamp as precarious, and so far that has not been my experience. The shade is large but pretty lightweight, and the base is startlingly heavy (though not hard to move). In case anyone else has this problem, I initially couldn’t find the ring that you need in order to keep the shade attached to the rest of the lamp, but it turned out to be on the screw that you screw the shade onto. I just had to “unscrew” the ring from the screw and then screw it on again after screwing on the shade. (Maybe that’s obvious to everyone else!) tl;dr: Owning this lamp is like dating someone gorgeous who turns out to have some really annoying personality flaws. ... show more
