  • Basso Profundo for your fiddle.
Style: Full Set
These are not a "quick easy" installation; the nut and bridge must both be re-grooved, and the back of the peg-box may need relieving to accommodate the thicker strings. Then, wax all the grooves, and bring the strings up to pitch slowly. Give them a bit to stretch and settle before final tuning, as they can break if brought to full tension all in one shot. That said, once installed and tuned, these strings gave me a "chin cello" that is great fun to play. They are adequately responsive (for what they are) and while the volume is modest, they are loud enough for acoustic performing within some obvious limitations. The tone is dark and these are best suited for an instrument that is screaming bright. They add an extra dimension for playing traditional music, especially for backup, and a nice rich texture to open up and enhance the sound of your ensemble. The Bach cello suites are very entertaining with these. ... show more

  • Very fun on an electric violin
Style: Full Set
I'm having a blast with these octave strings. I had a luthier alter the nut and the bridge so the thick strings fit in my electric, and got a really cheap cello bow. I've been making arrangements of duets with my regular violin and the octave one and it sounds so nice- like I'm playing with a cello. Definitely needs amplification, and would be a little difficult for beginners. I broke one when putting it on and am definitely bummed at how expensive they are to replace though. ... show more

  • Fun to play with
Style: Full Set
These are a lot of fun to play with, makes old fiddle tunes sound a little strange though in some cases. Just need to keep in mind these pay completely different than most fiddle strings and won't respond as quick. Perfect for slow tunes not so great for quick and fun

  • Good sound for the money.
Style: Full Set
I used this on a 14 inch viola to create an octave violin tuning it to GDAE. It works well. The sound is good. I put these both on a violin and viola. They both work well. The sound acoustically is not great but not bad. Under amplification and a little EQ, delay, and reverb it does sound very much like a cello. I would buy again. ... show more

  • Looking for cello without the full size cello hassles?
Style: Full Set
I wouldn’t recommend this for beginners just because it’s not necessarily the same as other violin strings however if you’re an amateur or pro musician looking for a cello sound with out the price tag of a full size cello, these are it. I absolutely love these and I read cello music and can play cello I just didn’t like the bulk of the cello so these are perfect as I have a small single room apartment. Space saving. And it sounds gloriously awesome in large halls and acoustically ideal spaces. I’d definitely recommend these for anyone looking for a taste of cello and have fun these are awesome!!! ... show more

  • Wow!
Style: Full Set
So I saw a couple videos online, and I had a spare violin laying around, and figured I would give these a try. It does exactly what they say, down a full octave, just like the videos. It's kinda of weird having and instrument as small as a standard violin be down in the cello range (yeah a cello is a 5th lower, but seriously the low string is the same G as the second lowest on a cello) Oh and be sure you pay attention to the octave when tuning as these strings are pretty soft. Pull them too tight and they will snap. ... show more

  • broke G string
Style: Full Set
My violin maker was making all the adjustments to put the Octava strings and the G string broke before starting to be tuned. I'm trying to contact the support from D'addario and they are not answering me. I'd like to have another G string or to get the reimburse, please.

  • Fiddle adventure!!
Style: Full Set
I LOVE THESE STRINGS!!! Although I carefully had to slightly enlarge the bridge indentations to accomidate the wider strings, they otherwise easily re-strung. Getting used to playing the heavier strings was a bit of a learning curve- need more bow pressure, and I felt my older and heavier bow worked better than the lighter carbon bow. The strings aren't as briskly receptive as traditional strings, but oh, my, the sound is just FANTASTIC!!! It does sound cello-like: deep, resonant. I'm playing my chin-cello violin more than my traditional one! I'm so glad I bought a 2nd violin for these!! ... show more
