We do rescue dogs and we need to keep it like Fort Knox around here so no one gets out from our 2 acres. All the dogs have the freedom of the enire area, but double gates are a concern. So glad I got this for the gates! My husband recently installed the Heavy Duty Self Closing Gate Hinge and Self Locking Latch Hardware Kit on my chain link fence gate. He had to do a little bit of a custom install because it is chain link, but it worked out famously. The stainless steel hinges are incredibly sturdy and have a sleek black finish that complements my fence perfectly. This setup has lasted for multiple winters with no issues. We have had a lot of ice this year and I have to knock the ice off to open it, but other than that it works. I would prefer the latch handle to be a bit longer.

The latch is very simple and intuitive to install, you shouldn't even need instructions, including the installation for the self closing hinges. The packaging is zip-lock bags with no real protection of the powder coat finish, which seems to ding, scratch and get ruined quite easily. The welding job is also sub-par. I was not able to actually install this, as there needs to be a minimum of about 3 inches or more between the edge of the door and the post where the latch rod goes. This fact is stated on the product page so it was my fault for not reading the requirements more closely. This is an identical product of another I ordered, but with the self closing hinges.

When we bought our house years ago, the previous owner had installed a latch similar to this one, but much, much cheaper. We always had problems with the latch jamming, so you would have to hit it with an object or your hand to get it to release. The bar the latch closes on was attached to the gate with carriage bolts, so it was definitely a home job. I picked up this one because it looked sturdier than the one we had and the bar is straight, which I was hoping at the time would keep it from jamming. The mechanism was actually a little wide for our plastic gate, but I easily added to holes closer in to make it work. I used a nut driver bit on my cordless drill to attach it with the included self-tappers. The entire installation took about 5 minutes for the gate latch, and probably 5 minutes each with the hinges since they needed to be adjusted. The old latch used the compression between the mechanism and the gate to keep the locking hasp in place, but this one is bolted together, which is much nicer. After installation, the latch works flawlessly. I will likely oil it to keep it working smoothly, but it has so far been exemplary.
