  • Durable, versatile, powerful
Color: blue C-frame
The side that isn't threaded has an opening and there should be a cap option for the install of u joints snap ring ( meaning the unthreaded side could benefit from having one vs. having to take the tool off and rotating it to the opposite side.) it's not included so, not a draw back. Highly recommend it for the weekend warrior. **** Make sure to Grease threads and the piston that compresses. It has a small O ring. Once you add grease if it snaps. Simple replace it. ... show more

  • Worked as expected
Needed to preplace some U-joints and am tired of the local Autoparts store renting busted tools. Went to my local HF store and they wanted $80 for this tool. Amazon came through with quick shipping and competitive pricing. The tool came shipped in the factory box. It worked well and helped me get the job done quickly and efficiently. Very happy with this purchase. ... show more

  • Does what it is supposed to do if used correctly.
Color: blue C-frame
I had a bad lower ball joint on a 2003 Tahoe. I had thought about "renting" a ball joint press from one of my local parts stores, but decided that, given the age of my daily driver, I was likely going to need this done on the other side eventually. They made these Tahoes like tanks, 220K miles on the original ball joint and all the other joints still look great.. I looked at Harbor freight and almost went that route, but I found this set for about half the price with next day delivery. This is the first ball joint replacement I have done, but have I done lots of other work on the truck so I felt pretty confident I could get this done without too much trouble. After several issues getting the joints to separate from the steering knuckles, (A Harbor Freight tool purchase) I went to work getting the lower ball joint out using this kit. Initially I had problems using this kit as it did not have a cup that fit my need specifically. I struggled to get the press to push out the ball joint on the first attempt. I actually deformed the cup I was using due to it not sitting correctly on the lower control arm. This caused me to have to use a file and belt sander to have to smooth over a sharp edge created in the deformation of the cup. I decided to sleep on the matter and try again in the morning. Upon first light I was back at it. I realized that the original manufacturing part had some tabs that were put in place to keep the ball joint from being removed. I chiseled those tabs off and tried using cups again. This time they did exactly what they were intended to do. I was able to press out the ball joint without too much fuss. One thing to keep in mind is that you WILL need to use a long breaker bar or cheater bar on a wrench. This job requires a lot of muscle to press out the ball joint. However, once I got the right set of cups and caps, and removed the locking tabs, the job went pretty smooth. The installation of the new ball joint was painless, but also required a good amount of force using a cheater bar for leverage. All in all I am very happy with this set. It did exactly what it was advertised it was supposed to. My only gripe is that the metal on the cups is a bit soft and deformed/tore, when I was trying to use it before correctly removing the tabs on the old ball joint. I suppose a harder metal would be more expensive, so I should not complain. For the weekend warrior or occasional odd job this set will do you well. If you are a professional mechanic, spend the money and get a better set. ... show more

  • Worked great for Silverado U-Joints
Seems like a very well built tool. I bought it specifically for changing the U-joints in my 2011 Silverado (after watching a video learning how to do it, and they used one). Worked great using a vice to hold it in place, 1/2 inch ratchet and it didn’t flinch under insane pressure! So I think it will also work great for ball joints when I decide to do them. ... show more

  • Works Just Fine - If You KNow How to Use One
Until I purchased this tool I have just borrowed them, which you can do at most major auto parts stores for free - well as long as you are making some kind of purchase. I have done a lot of front end work and will probably do more so decided to just get my own tool. This one is very similar to the ones I have borrowed although a bit smaller, meaning a few less adapters. But for my 2010 F150 it had what I needed and would have been fine with the other 20 or so jobs I have done over my lifetime. It's well made with solid components including the heavy duty press and should work well for most applications. Comes in a nice form fitting case so you'll know if a part is missing. I can definitely recommend this for someone who plans to do a lot of front end work in the future. But if it's just for one job, I recommend renting one. That said, there are a few "tricks" to using one of these and probably making is a bit of a challenge for someone not accustom to removing and replacing ball joints. If it's your first time using one of these here are a few tips. For one, these tools are much better and made more for installing ball joints than removing them. If you are using it to remove a ball joint make sure to remove the snap ring (if there is one) and spray the joint well with penetrating oil. I recommend doing this a few hours before starting the removal if not overnight. Also, before using the tool to remove the ball joint, use a small but heavy hammer first. Brace up the arm so there is no give and give it a few good wacks, then spray it again. You won't hurt the frame so don't worry about that. Just make sure to hit the joint flat so as not to make a dent near the edge which might cause a hang up. Repeat this a few times and you might be surprised that it comes out just doing this versus trying to press it out. I have hammered out more than I have pressed out by a wide margin. At the very least it will loosen it up a bit before you use the press. If you do need to press it out, stop now and then as you tighten it down and give it a few more wacks with the hammer. If it's real stubborn, you might need to apply a little heat to the frame - not the ball joint. Again, you won't hurt anything heating it up so get it good and hot. Just keep clear of any rubber bushing or wiring nearby. Use a breaker bar with a socket to apply the needed pressure but noting more than that. If you need to use a pipe to extend the length of the bar to apply more pressure, you could and probably will, bend the tool. You need to be patient, tighten, spray, heat, wack with hammer - repeat. It will come lose. Installing the new ball joint is the tricky part and where most first timers run into trouble. You want to clean the hole out with a wire brush and apply a thin film of grease. Then figure out what combinations of adapter are needed to install the ball joint based on the design. Again though, you should not need anything more than a breaker bar to apply the needed pressure. It is possible for the ball joint to get cocked in the the hole, but pretty unlikely. If the tool is setup properly, the ball joint will pretty much self-center as there is normally a slight tapper. Install the new snap ring and that's it. Hope this helps a little. There are also quite a few You Tube videos on using the tool, although some are not that good so keep these tips in mind. I have done this many times. Good Luck !! ... show more

  • Worth it
Color: blue C-frame
I used this press on a rusted ball joint that almost seemed impossible to take out until I used this press. I used previous presses that I own but none could press it without showing bend to the arm. I took this bad boy out and pressed it out with ease. Really good price for part you recieve as well. Simple to use. ... show more
