  • Easy to install and use
Size: 250,000 BTU (W3H250FDP)
Was a piece of cake to install and startup. Was well informed about how much propane is needed to heat a pool, so I was not surprised. With a 26K gal. pool starting at 60 deg F, increased about 1.6 deg per hour, or about 2.3 gal of propane per hour. Our goal was to extend our swimming season in NE Texas. April is probably a bit early as we discovered due mainly to the difficulty of retaining the added heat. In the future will probably wait until May before using for the season...with adequate pool covers. ... show more

  • Hayward's Dishonor
Size: 150,000 BTU (W3H150FDP)
Hayward has lousy customer service and does not honor their product warranties. I offer my own experience here as an example. Hurricane Helene struck the west coast of Florida in September 2024 causing a storm surge which inundated our Hayward W3H150FDP propane pool heater with salt water. In December of 2024 I replaced it with the exact same model at a cost of around $2500. After only 4 months in service, this new heater sprang a major leak causing our pool level to be lowered overnight to a level below the skimmer opening. After removing the cover and rain shield, the problem was immediately obvious. Due to a manufacturing defect of the heat exchanger, 3 to 4 of the radiating copper fins were pushed back from the thermal wall of the exchanger baring about a 1 inch section of the core copper pipe to direct heating exposure from the flame. This intense heat of course took the path of least resistance to get out and across this bit of the bared copper pipe. After continual roasting for 4 months, this section of bare copper pipe deteriorated to the point that it finally failed and burst. After removing the heat exchanger from the heater and disassembling it at Hayward's request, I sent photos from all angles including a closeup view of this compromised section of the exchanger. These photos showed clear evidence of the heat deprecated pipe with the hole in it. After viewing only these photos and without a "hands on" inspection, Hayward's customer service personnel concluded that the damage was due to improper chemical maintenance of the pool water. Therefore Hayward would not honor their warranty to replace defective parts. They did however offer to replace the damaged heat exchanger part (FDXLHXA1150) for their "at cost" of more than $1100. I informed Hayward at this point that I could buy this same part online with free shipping at Amazon or any number of online pool supply stores for less than their "at cost" offer. In looking at photos showing examples of chemically damaged heat exchangers on Hayward's training site, I compared the photos I sent Hayward. My heat exchanger showed no such chemical damage. Except for the heat damaged section, the rest of my exchanger looked pristine which one would expect after only 4 months in service. Therefore, this assessment of chemical damage and their "at cost" replacement offer was nothing but pure BS on Hayward's part. I've had pools most of my life. Knowing the importance of proper maintenance of pool water chemistry and its effect on the health of both people and equipment, I have always maintained proper chemical balance in my pools including this one. In fact, after installing the new heater and before disposing of the one that had been flooded, I removed and kept its heat exchanger. So I do have a good point of comparison to see (1) what a properly manufactured exchanger without defects looks like, and (2) to see no "evidence" of either heat or chemical damage of the old exchanger which had been in service for 2 years prior to the occurrence of Hurricane Helene. After having repeated discussions with Hayward's customer service personnel relating to all of the above, they still refused to do the right thing and honor Hayward's warranty. They did bring their "at cost" offer down to $550 however. I view this as extortion. If I don’t pay this, all I have is a useless $2500 brick with Hayward’s name on it sitting on my pool deck. After this experience, I have no further desire to deal with the cost, time, and aggravation of what is Hayward's idea of customer service. So, needless to say, I won't be buying any more Hayward products from now on. I urge all who read this to do the same. ... show more

  • Workhorse.. so far... UPDATED
Size: 150,000 BTU (W3H150FDP)
Well, after reading almost all the reviews, many of which either loved this heater, or advised to avoid it at all cost, I decided to give it a try. For 12 years, I have been heating my plunge spa with a Hayward heat pump, and while it worked, it was super slow to heat in the spring and the fall. I chose the smallest propane heater I could find, as my pool is only 10' by 10' by 4' with an infinity edge. Plumbing it in was pretty straight forward. This little heater roared to life and I went from a 1 degree increase every hour with the heat pump, to 1 degree every 10 minutes. It has worked flawlessly since the install 4 months ago, and I hope it will continue. When it fires up, it has a low rumble, and the water is very noticeably hot. It only kicks on a couple of times a day. Thought I would give it a thumbs up to counter all the negative reviews. UPDATE Feb 2022: After 2 seasons, this little guy has worked perfectly. Not a single issue. My little plunge spa stays as warm as we want to set it. UPDATE May 2024: Fired right up again this year. Can't say enough good things about it. ... show more

  • Arrived with a broken igition board and Hayward customer service is useless
Size: 150,000 BTU (W3H150FDP)
It takes quite some effort to get such a heater properly installed to power and gas, then one has to figure out how to connect it the pool filter and pool, as it doesn't come with any ready-to-connect hose connectors. One has to figure out for themselves what parts are needed to connect the water-flow. When everything was finally connected, I was greeted by an error code. Proper diagnosis revealed that the ignition control board is faulty. Btw - BEWARE IF YOU ARE BUYING THIS PRODUCT ONLINE: Only PARTS are covered by warranty, but no labor! I have since been trying to get a call-back from Hayward tech support (3 days now) and just called back again to be told that they technicians are too busy right now (is it because your product breaks so easily??) and that I should call back next week if I don't hear from them today. - Possibly another weekend where I can't use the heater. Reaching out to the seller ("In The Swim") just got me boilerplate responses such as: "You can return the unit, if you pack it in its original box on its original crate". It cost me a lot of money to just get it professionally hooked up, I just want the damn thing repaired. Needless to say that this was the last Hayward product I will ever buy (unless they do get back to me today and resolve my issue ASAP! - I may update my review accordingly). ... show more
