  • The best poultry fount I've owned, however...
Size: 6.25 gallon Style: Drinker
Just to establish that I know a thing or two about poultry founts, I've been raising chickens for over 25 years in addition to the fowl menagerie we had growing up on a farm. I've used just about every fount imaginable. Galvanized lose their ability to hold vacuum with any kind of dent or when they inevitably become rusty. The worst are the large plastic founts that work by vacuum alone, especially the ones that require the lid to be twisted on super tight in order to create vacuum. They won't unscrew without the jaws of life. The second worst are the ones that require you to fill the upside down bucket, put on the base, and turn it over. You lose much of the water and you get wet no matter what way you try to do to avoid it. All founts that rely on vacuum are disgusting. Chickens defecate in their water which gets sucked up into the clean water on vacuum waterers, requiring daily dumping and refilling, almost making the idea of an automatic waterer pointless. I have been using the Harris Farms (owned by Manna Pro - for those that know the name from livestock feed) waterer for 4 years and just ordered a second one. There are a number of things that make this the best waterer ever, however, it is finicky. I am shocked at the number of negative reviews, so I'll address the problems one might have first. Honestly, if you have trouble figuring out that the nipple on the float needs to fit into the corresponding recess in the bucket, this might not be the waterer for you. The tub needs to be secured tightly to the base, otherwise it will all leak out. It matters which direction the plastic screw and nut go (the assembly instructions shows you). You only have to do this when assembling it, which you'll rarely need to do because, outside of a float problem, you never need to disassemble it. Getting one hand into the bottom of the deep bucket while keeping the other hand at the bottom of the base can be tricky, but again, a tight connection is paramount. That red cap that sits on the nipple in the bucket needs to be taken off so that the waterer works. You don't really need that red cap. I just leave it sitting (floating) in the bucket. Every once in a while (like maybe once/yr), enough water would seep into the float to not allow it to rise and shut off the water supply. When this happens, the water will all flood out. You can check if there's water in the float by shaking it. Unsnap the two sections of the float, drain the water, and snap back together. Fixes the problem until the next time, or do what I eventually did, which is fill the float body with a $5 can of expanding foam and snap the lid back on. If you don't have a good feel for how much the foam will expand, it would be a good idea to drill some holes in the top of the float to allow excess foam room to escape. Once the foam is dry in a few hours, the excess is easily cut off with a serrated knife or fine toothed saw. The foam might distort the float as it expands if you put too much in without having the holes. The foam is 100% waterproof when dry, so the now foam-filled drilled holes will not effect float performance. Water infiltration into the float is the only real weak point to this fount, and yes, the manufacturer should put styrofoam in to begin with, however, it is still, hands down, the best fount ever! Now, on to why this deserves 5 stars! No more crappy water! The float mechanism does not allow dirty water to be mixed back in with the clean water. The tray is much larger than most trays and, because the inside is rounded vs. angular, there are no crevices to clean out. Cleaning this thing is a breeze. The lid comes off and on easily. At 6 gallons, this holds a lot of water, and because the fresh water remains fresh, I feel okay about filling it and forgetting it. I have had no problems with the waterer on a galvanized heated base (upstate NY temperatures). The water at the top of the bucket will freeze, but the area at the bottom remains liquified. Lastly, I rarely ever keep this thing perfectly level and it does not overflow. I'd say that if it's overflowing, it may have nothing to do with being level (within reason) and is more likely is related to one of the aforementioned possible oversights or float problems. ... show more

  • The best waterer I’ve ever found! The best waterer I’ve ever found!
Size: 3.5 gallon Style: Drinker
This is the BEST year round waterer I have found for my chickens in ten years! I’m really mad that I listened to the bad reviews and didn’t give this a try earlier! The good: The inside stays perfectly clean, which is a huge deal! My old bottom filled waterer and automatic hose waterers would get so nasty and I would have to scrub them out constantly. It was a huge pain in the butt, especially in the winter when we had freezing temps. You can see that we have very hard water so the calcium is stuck on there but that doesn’t take long around here in the summer heat lol. I have a hose running out to it for easy filling but this thing lasts about three-four days for ten chickens in over 100° heat in Arizona, and about five days in the cooler temps. It’s super easy to hose out the bottom when it gets dirty and the top fill is SO nice after having to deal with one of those awful, heavy, bottom filled waterers in the winter for years. I’m also really happy that this thing works in the winter with a simple bulb heater on the bottom and I’m not getting soaked and dealing with ice daily like I was with the old one I had. The ‘bad’: The ONLY negative I can think of is that it can’t be hung up by the handle, which is what I was originally planning, but that isn’t a big deal at all. I just placed ours on a leveled piece of sandstone In the summer and on our bulb heater in the winter; it works great. I also wanted to let people know that it does not fill anywhere near the top of the drinking bowl, like it claims. I’ve tried adjusting the float but it stays pretty shallow. This isn’t a problem for my chickens but this definitely can’t be used for ducks as some people have asked. ... show more

  • Great idea in concept. Does not work in reality.
Size: 3.5 gallon Style: Drinker
I think some of the other reviews are lacking in their accuracy and are not comprehensive enough to explain where this products faults lie. I will attempt to do that here. This product comes in four main pieces. there is the base, the float, the water reservoir (white part), and the lid. The reservoir has a small nipple that allows the water to escape into the base. There is a black plastic float with a rubber stop that is SUPPOSED to stop up the nipple when the base if full but that is where the flaw lies. It may or may not stop the water from leaking the base. It's really a crap shoot. It may work one day and not the next. It's really not a good design. Unfortunately this is not the only place where water can escape. The reservoir and the base are held together by a plastic nut with an O ring with the float in between them. The base is pretty decent size and the weight of the water appears to be a problem keeping a seal with the plastic nut that holds the base and the reservoir together. It needs to be tight but if you tighten it down too much you risk stripping the plastic threads or pushing out the O ring. Sitting the drinker on the ground alleviates some of the stress that the water puts on the base but if it's not flat, the float may not work (and it may not work even if it is flat). I will look for other ways to possibly modify this bucket to make it usable or cannibalize it's parts. For the price charged here, I would expect it to work as advertised though. Drinkers that leak defeat the purpose esp. when the smaller gravity fed version that they make lasts longer than this one will (if it leaks, expect to be filling it every day). In addition, other folks have reported that the float will sink after time. I have not had that problem yet but if that's the case, then there is another problem that needs to be addressed. Anyway I knew it was risky based on the other reviews but the one that talked about removing the red cap covering the nipple on the bucket made me wonder if it was user error so I decided to give it a try. That was not the problem here. The float is not an effective shut off switch and the base is too heavy for a plastic washer or nut (needs to be metal with rubber washer IMO). It is more likely to leak than not because of these two major design flaws. If you are looking for a large drinker, I would recommend going with the 3gal gravity fed version. It's bigger hassle to refill but the gravity ones work well if they are level (easily solved by hanging it). ... show more

  • Good product but they don’t all work successfully
Size: 6.25 gallon Style: Drinker
I ordered one of these and it worked so well that I ordered a second one. The first one never failed but the second one would end up with a dry tray at least once or twice a week. After reading the reviews, we took it apart to figure out why it failed. They must have changed the float design because it is sealed and can’t fill up with water. There was no debris affecting the float. We never did find a reason for the regular failures. It was disappointing to have one work so well and the other (exact same product) be so inconsistent. If any other purchasers have a suggestion on what to look for - that hasn’t already been mentioned in reviews - I’d be interested in hearing it. ... show more

  • Easy to fill.
Size: 6.25 gallon Style: Drinker
Perfect for my small flock. A dozen chickens. The first one I bought was outside and didn’t last the sun exposure as well as I would like. Now I have it inside the coop and works well. I use it in combination with “ my favorite chicken water heater” which fits under it perfectly and has kept the water liquid when outside temps have been down to 0 Fahrenheit. ... show more

  • Love this waterer compared to other types, 1 year later LEAKING!!
Size: 3.5 gallon Style: Drinker
Originally bought this April 2025.......Tried the nipple style and the chickens wouldn’t use. Then tried the cup type on a bucket. I hated those as have to clean each cup of debris. Got this 3.5 gallon waterer and I really like it. This size not to heavy for me. I have it sitting on 4 12x12 pavers to raise it from the ground and at full grown chicken height. This stopped ground debris from getting kicked into it. Can’t be hung as the handle is plastic and would be broke but I have it attached to the top of pen to stop the chickens from trying to get on top of it. There is a float system that stops debris in the trough from getting into the storage water. I just take outside the pen and do a quick dump of the water in the trough daily or every other day. The water level in trough is high enough without overflowing. Not deep enough for Ducks!! Red cap is for putting on the filler inside the storage area when doing a total refill, I leave it floating in the storage water. I usually just add more water from a separate bucket. But do a full change of water in the summer with a quick clean of the trough and have no algae build up. Don’t forget to remove that red plastic cap when doing a total refill. Someone said can take apart but I never have in 8 months. Sat on a 14.5”metal chicken water heater during the winter and was fine. I love it compared to other types. Edited: Changed my rating from 5 stars to 2!!! One year later I now have the leaking problem! I usually just fill the tank from a separate bucket, but I dumped the whole water and filled with total new. Now it overfills the trough and drains the storage tank. I took it apart and I have I believe a newer design with a sealed white float (not full of water) and a Float Stop that is covered by a plastic cover and I can't get to the Float Stop. A Youtube video says to place some very small washers (size 8 or 10) under the rubber at the top of the Float Stop. I was going to try this but I can't get to the top of the Float Stop. I have purchased another one and contacted Manna Pro. If the new one works properly I will hopefully return the leaking one to Manna Pro for replacement. If not will take apart again to see if I can get the washers in there. If this one breaks I will be going back to the cheap gravity feed waterers!!!! Not replacing this thing every year at $66.00 ... show more
