Really great if you like Toddy's
Size: 1000 Milliliters Color: Red
I've never been a big coffee drinker at all, ever. I have my 14oz of coffee in the morning and I'm okay, I'm also okay when I don't have my 14oz of coffee in the morning. However, I really like how Toddy's were not as acidic as regular coffee which is what I disliked from regular hot coffee. After spending $3.59 almost every day for 2 months I decided to just buy a cold brewer of my own and I'm so glad that I did. This thing is so cheap it has paid for itself twice over, if you multiply how much I bought coffee in a month. It's super easy to use and any type of coffee will work really, I've used fine ground and I've used medium ground and I don't get residue in any of my cups. It's a hefty amount of grounds you have to put in it (depending on strength you want I guess) but I just go with the recommended 8oz of grounds, however, I can get 2 1/2 cups of coffee out of it, and if you buy coffee in bulk, it's really not a bad thing. This thing is really TALL, make sure you realize that because it will only fit on the bottom shelf of my fridge door since it's so tall. It's really easy to clean, including the filter, and it's not a hassle to have to wash it, dry it, and put some grounds and water in because the process is so fast. You just have to put the grounds in and forget about it until the next morning. EDIT 04/16/16: Almost one year later and my container fell sideways in the sink while I was washing it and a big chunk shattered off the top :( It had fallen before but not broken but today was that day. I bought another literally like 5 minutes after I threw away the broken one but obviously kept the old ones filter and top! Still makes GREAT cold brew coffee which is the only type of coffee I tolerate. ... show more

UPDATED -Love It So Much We Bought Two (Decaf and Regular)- and Replacement Mistake An Improvement!
Size: 1000 Milliliters Color: Red
PLEASE UPDATED INFORMATION AT END OF REVIEW (CHANGED RATING EXPLAINED) --------------- (Original review) I was not sure what to expect when I got this coffee pot. I have the similar pot for cold brew for tea FORLIFE Mist Glass Ice Tea Jug , 50-Ounce, Turquoiseso I thought that this would be a great addition to our kitchen. I am absolutely in love with the cold brew tea pot and use it constantly. I am still not sure I am as fond of this coffee pot as I thought I would be, however. WHAT IS THIS POT LIKE? In contrast to the Mist Tea Jug, this pot has a silicone type filter in it which is more like synthetic cheese cloth. The filter is reinforced with hard plastic and the rim sits in the rim of a very tall and narrow glass pot. This pot can be used hot or cold, but not on direct heat to my understanding. The lid snaps on, but is not air tight. The handle is at the top making it easy to pour. I have the red option. When storing on the door of the refrigerator, I am a bit nervous about the height of this pot. It seems almost a bit unstable due to the narrow bottom vs the long height that it has. It does not tip over easily, but if someone were to suddenly jerk the door of the refrigerator open, I am not so sure that this pot will not tip off the shelf. HOW TO USE THIS POT The directions are in Japanese with illustrations, but even when translated, I do not like the coffee made in this pot using the instructions enclosed which require 80g of coffee and a very long brewing time of up to 24 hours. I prefer to use medium coarse ground coffee filled HALFWAY up the see through area. That translates to approximately 6 Tablespoons of ground coffee. Then I gradually pour filtered water over top which is room temperature. I leave this to sit in the kitchen at room temperature, not the refrigerator. If I want to drink it sooner, then I will grind it finer- right between medium and fine. If I am going to leave it in longer, then I will grind it the medium coarse setting. It is important to stir the grounds a few times to get them brewing well. If they are not stirred up, they will clump at the top like a big plug and not do much of anything. If we want to drink it sooner with the medium fine grind, we will drink this from after 15 minutes to a half hour of making it. We warm it up on the stove since it is still winter weather, and then either make bullet proof coffee out of it, or traditional coffee with sweetener (we use honey) and cream. We will often add just a little bit of boiling water just to make it the right concentration. We will leave it in the brewer about 4 hours tops- not longer than that. I find that the caffeine content is too high for me and I don't like it. My husband does not like the taste of it after 4 hours either and loves it when I stop brewing at 4 hours, although he does like it after 15 minutes or so too. (If he has a cup, I just add more water to the filter to brew the four hours after that and it is still fine) HOW DOES THIS COFFEE POT PERFORM? I do not like coffee made in this the traditional way. Perhaps this summer when my husband and son enjoy iced coffee this will get more use. I bought it primarily for that reason. However, I was interested in trying the cold brewed coffee for the more alkaline behavior in the body. IT is very smooth and great tasting if I use the brewing method I listed above. When using the instructions as laid out the caffeine content ruins the coffee for me. I just don't like it. Even diluted way down I am not fond of it. HOW EASY IS THIS TO CLEAN? If you clean this right away, it is easy to clean. Immediately when I am done brewing, I remove the filter with the coffee grounds and the bottom screws off. I quickly knock the grounds into the compost and then clean the filter with a gentle brush brush using GENTLE motions. Too hard and rough will ruin this filter. I only keep the coffee in the pot in the refrigerator for two days as it is not air tight so it will get stale quickly with that refrigerator taste. THE BOTTOM LINE This coffee pot makes one of the most smooth and not bitter coffees that I have ever had. I like it even more than french press coffee, although I did find that the french press cold brewed coffee seemed to taste a bit better than this pot, perhaps I need to compare again side by side. Warmed up, it is wonderful tasting for regular coffee drinking or even bullet proof coffee. Although it does not make much coffee, and has to be made every couple of days, it is one way to have coffee that is smooth and not bitter without babysitting it to a degree. I am still not in love with this coffee pot. It is good and I will use it, especially in the summer when the guys love their iced coffee, but for me, it just isn't that WOW. Perhaps as I continue to work with it, I will change my feelings about it, but after a week of constant use and experimentation, I am still on the fence about my feelings for it. I like it- sort of. And the coffee is really good. But is it worth it? I am just not sure yet. I am rating this four stars, but will update with more information as I continue to experiment with this and find our favorite way to use it. ---------------------- UPDATE (4-2016) The above is my original review, but I have changed my review to five stars. I have learned that for our needs, using fine/med grind works perfectly. I only leave the grounds in the pot for 4 hours max and then take them out and store the pot in the refrigerator. We warm the coffee up on the stove, or if preferred, drink it on ice. If using about 33% water added to it, it is perfect. My problem was that I was trying to use this heated up for bulletproof coffee a lot and I really am not that fond of it in that application. This seems to taste better with sweetener and a touch of cream if desired in it. I really like it better that way. For heat brewed coffee, I prefer bulletproof preparation. With cold processed, I prefer cream and sweetener instead. The finer grind leaves a tiny bit of sludge in the bottom of the pitcher but it is not that much and the coffee is smooth and clean. Coarser grind does not release enough flavor for us and left about the same amount of sludge. UPDATE- REPLACEMENT FILTER I wanted to get a backup filter for this coffee maker. I found the page for it, and it was brown just like this one was. When I sent for it, I was surprised to see that the bottom had a screen in it instead of the solid bottom. It still twisted off. The coffee brewer works so much better with it than the original. It has a tiny bit more sediment but works much faster. I love it. They have since changed it to the green tea strainer part so apparently something was amiss when I ordered it. I still am glad, however, as I do prefer the screen bottom over the solid Here is a link to the replacement part in case you want to try it too: Strainer of HCC-12DG ... show more

Amazing cup of ice coffee... Unless brewed too long
Size: 1000 Milliliters Color: Red
To fully appreciate how much I love this coffee maker, I think it may be interesting to know how much I hated coffee until this year. Throughout college, all of my friends drank coffee, but I couldn't get into the taste. It seemed like an "adult" drink to me, and I was content to get my caffeine fix through soda. Last year when I started teaching, my kids found my soda habit kind of funny, because I was an "adult" to them, even if I never felt like one myself. Unfortunately, the stresses of being a first year teacher meant that my caffeine consumption increased (along with my weight), and by the end of the year, I needed two sodas just to make it throughout the day. The kids found this relatable because my windowsill was always lined with empty cans, and whoever brought a bag could take them away and have all of my deposits. Fast forward to this year. I swore I would drink no soda. I almost never drank it over the summer, and I knew if I allowed myself to drink it during school, I would gain back all the weight I lost in the summer. Still needing my caffeine fix, I started trying warm coffee but I HATED it. I tried a ton of different brand, a bunch of different ways, but once I bought a Dunkin Donuts mocha with cream, I found a coffee I could tolerate. By Christmas break, though, I was spending $3 every morning on a large coffee, and I didn't really have $30 every two weeks to spend on coffee. Knowing I only liked ice coffee, I started researching cold-brews, but I didn't research too much before I just committed to this one on a whim. If I thought Dunkin's ice coffee was good, I was a FOOL. Now that I've had this, I can barely stand the Dunkin. Now, I knew the instructions were in Japanese, but like a reasonable, digital-age Millennial, I YouTube'd the Hario to watch someone make one. I make it at night on Sundays. I put 80 grams of ground beans in the filter, get it nice and wet, and keep mixing the beans with a straw until the coffee pot is full. My first weeks worth of coffee was amazing! It wasn't bitter, like the hot brewed coffee was, and I mixed it with Silk Chocolate Milk in order to get the Mocha flavor that I liked from Dunkin. It's infinitely better (and cheaper) than stopping for coffee every morning. My one little set back came this past week when I was running late Monday morning and didn't have any clean tumblers and I decided it would be faster (for some stupid reason), to stop and get a Dunkin coffee instead of pouring my own. Unfortunately, I forgot to take the grounds from the filter, so they brewed for 24 hours instead of my usual 12. It was SO STRONG that I was only using a little coffee and a ton of Silk. It was like a 33% coffee ratio, it was that strong. Either way, it still wasn't bitter. It was just strong as heck. Anyway, as someone who had to fight tooth and nail to tolerate coffee in the first place, I would strongly recommend this coffee pot. ... show more

Makes excellent cold brew concentrate. Have to pour with two hands to balance such a tall pot. Removable filter bottom.
Size: 1000 Milliliters Color: Brown
Can't believe I like this but I do. I'm giving it 4 stars though because although everything I own related to coffee brewing is a Hario brand item, I found this to be somewhat awkward to pour from when full or even not so full. If you notice the handle is at the very top where every handle should be (lol) but when you brew a full pot, you have to hold one hand at the bottom and be sure to pour slowly when full. You have to support that tall size with one hand. There is no danger of the handle breaking, its just a matter of balance. The first cup I poured out of a full pitcher leaked around the pouring spout on my counter so you need to go slowly and carefully at first. Performance wise, it sure did the job well. The filter seems a bit fragile so I'm being careful not to push the nylon pieces at all. The cap is awkward but it does the job so not an issue. One outstanding feature is that the bottom of the filter actually unscrews so you can easily just rinse the filter clean or just dump the grounds. Wow, this really made it handy. I was concerned about the filter material and this took care of that. I'd feel better if Hario offered a replacement filter for sale just in case though. A good item for its cost and the coffee is great. I see differing opinions as to whether this brews cold coffee or cold coffee concentrate. You roughly grind 80g of coffee which fills the filter to the top. That much coffee left for 12 or ideally closer to 15-20 hours makes concentrate unless you have a personal need to leap tall buildings in one bound or, as someone else said, want to control time itself. I left mine overnight until noon the next day, removed the grounds then poured 1/2 cup of the concentrate in a mug with 3/4 cup boiling water and had a delicious coffee. That was 4 days ago. I just finished the concentrate this afternoon (refrigerated) and it tasted as fresh as day 1. Most concentrates can be kept refrigerated for 3 weeks. All in all, I like this brewer but have to remember to pour slowly and balance that tall glass carafe with both hands. ... show more

Easy, good, low acid coffee. What's not to like?
Size: 1000 Milliliters Color: Brown
Over the last three years, I have been experimenting with all sorts of different coffee brewing methods in an attempt to find one that met the list of things I wanted from a coffee maker. 1: It has to be easy. I do not mind grinding my beans as I can see a definite improvement in the quality of the finished product with that, but I have also tried: Pour overs. Too finicky about the pour time and such. Aeropress. Killer coffee. Too much rather precise timing and such for early morning pre-coffee brain. Two different high-end small size brewers. Could not get a decent cup of coffee out of either of them. Sour or bitter. A semi-automatic Espresso machine. Again, too much work for a cup of joe. 2: The resulting coffee has to be adaptable. Somedays I want a strong short hot cup. Other days a milder glass of iced coffee. And sometimes I like to make a quasi Vietnamese style super sweet with Hazelnut syrup over ice. 3: I would prefer it not be acidic. So of course, A cold brew rig is the way to go. I started with a Toddy. Works well, but the part where you sit a half gallon of coffee and grounds balanced over a juice carafe for an hour to let it drip through the small fiber puck filter...ehh. I kept having nightmares of that crap all over my kitchen. Yeah, I can set it in the sink, but my sink is not flat bottomed, so the wobbly factor was raised. Plus those filters are a dog to get rinsed out. Noticed the flow was significantly diminished after the third batch even with soaking the filter in multiple changes of water after use. Then I thought I was overthinking it. So I went with 50 grams of fine grind in a quart mason jar of water in the fridge overnight. Filtered it through a Melitta #4 in one of the pour over gadgets. That worked, but again a bit too fiddly. Plus I got the feeling I was filtering out some of the wanted coffee flavors. Along came this lil number. I have a few Hario kitchen gadgets already, so I was familiar with the brand and their quality. The 80 grams of ground coffee for a liter of returned concentrate seemed high at first. But man with a 24-hour brew in the fridge, this concentrate is strong. Like I tried drinking an espresso cup of it with a teaspoon of sugar straight, and after a while, I felt I could see through time. 1 to 1 water to concentrate is plenty strong for most folks iced coffee. Maybe a bit stronger for a drink with creamer and sugars. My go-to summertime drink is. Make the Mizudashi with 80 grams of semi-fine grind medium roast. (I have a Capresso Infinity grinder, and I set it on the 2nd tick mark from the right in the FINE section) 1150 ml of bottled water (my tap water is hella hard) and a 24 hour brew time in the fridge. Pull the filter basket, and I pour the concentrate into a 32 oz. Nalgene bottle. In a second Nalgene bottle, I mix: 1 15oz can of full fat Coconut milk, 8 oz. of simple syrup and 8 oz of bottled water. Shake the devil out of it to blend, and it goes into the fridge too. When I want a drink, I pour into a 20 oz glass: Half cup of concentrate, half cup of the Milk mix (Shaking well before), half cup of water and fill the glass with ice. Stir or shake in a cocktail mixer. Is it super strong? No. Is it super sweet? No. Does it cost $8 like from Starbuckers? Nope. ... show more

Well worth the money if you’re a normal person who doesn’t drink multiple cups of cold brew.
Size: 1000 Milliliters Color: Black
If you’re someone that only drinks cold brew a couple days of the week I really recommend this. I’m someone that needs a cup of coffee every day so I do find that I don’t use this over my toddy all that often. it’s very sleek and looks lovely in my fridge. The filter is a fine mesh. I do find that I get some sediment in the bottom of my coffee, but not a lot and it’s usually only my last cup of cold brew before I need to remake some more. the only negative that I have with this is that it does take a while to pour the water over the grounds, but if you fill it up with water and then push your grounds in, they end up getting everywhere so you just have to pour it over and wait ... show more

1-Year Retrospective W/ Tips
Size: 1000 Milliliters Color: Black
I've been using a 1000ml Mizudashi as my primary coffee brewing method for just about a year, and I absolutely love the thing. It took a little tweaking of my method to get "the perfect cup," but now that I've gotten it down, I couldn't be happier with the results. First things first: Aside from some coffee stains on the filter, everything is in the same condition as when it shipped. The glass is very high quality, and even the plastic bits have held up just fine. For a ~$20 device, I expected some quality issues and have found none. Tips for success: - Use good coffee and pure water. Maybe it doesn't need to be said, but there is a serious taste difference between freshly roasted, quality beans, and the cheap pre-ground stuff you get in plastic tubs at the supermarket. Stick with quality and you'll be happier. - Coarse, coarse, coarse. If you have a good grinder and can get a uniform coarseness to your beans, go with that. If you don't have a good grinder (I do not), you'll need to buy, then pre-grind your beans somewhere else. I've found that a finer grind will cause problems with brewing, resulting in a markedly weaker cup of coffee. Coarse grind = strong coffee! - Don't stress the whole "chopstick stirring" thing. Get the filter wet, fill it 2/3 up with your coarse coffee grinds, then pass your filtered water through the grinds, making sure it all gets good and saturated. The water will be blonde at best. That's really ok. - Give it at least 12-14 hours. I tend to finish off a pot and then start the next day's batch at least 12 hours before I'm going to want it. There's nothing wrong with filling up the pot with water and grinds, then sticking the whole thing in the fridge overnight. I've even left it in there for several days (makes super mega ultra coffee, grants the ability to SEE THROUGH WALLS and possibly CONTROL TIME ITSELF). - Be careful with this stuff. It's super tasty, especially when cut with cream and a little vanilla extract, and poured over ice cubes. I drank a whole pot in a day once and thought I was going to die. Take it easy. Moderation. Enjoy! ... show more

Works very well, when used correctly.
Size: 1000 Milliliters Color: Brown
Works better than my Bodum French Press or the mason jar cold brew method. Less mess, harder to screw up. The directions were in Japanese, but I found English directions on the Hario UK website: “Using the Hario cold brew coffee pot brown is very simple. It also has measurements on the pot so no extra tools are necessary. Add 80g of ground coffee and 1100ml of water to create 1000ml of cold brew concentrate. Leave the grounds steeping for approximately 8 - 12 hours and then combine with water. Pour the cold brew over ice and enjoy with milk or black. The Cold Brew Coffee Pot Brown is perfect for drinking cold coffee and is great summer time treat.” I found that 80g of course ground is about 3/4 of an inch below the top of the white polyester filter material. I slowly pour the water thru the dry coffee to make sure it’s thoroughly wet and the water level is just above where coffee was. Slow down as you get near the top, there a bit of delay as the water passes thru the filter and it’s easy to overfill. The resulting coffee is cold brew goodness. I mix mine with 50% water and heat it up in the mornings. In the afternoon I’ll have some iced. I find I don’t need cream or sugar because the reduced acidity makes it much smoother and better tasting than hot brew IMO. Careful, it does feel like it’s higher in caffeine than I was used to. Or perhaps I simply drink more because I like it better and it’s just easier to pour a cup out of the fridge where it never gets that old coffee taste that hot brew gets after 10 or 15 minutes. Update: I also got an Aeropress. If you need coffee in a hurry the Aeropress is the way to go. My wife likes the cold brew better, so obviously I'm drinking cold brew :) ... show more
