Update: doesn’t work when under 10 degrees outside. Similar inside the coop (not mine, but I take care of the chickens),& it doesn’t work to -10 degrees F. Extended periods of cold weather below 20 degrees, not effective. Like another reviewer said, the top freezes solid, which makes sense. Just hooked it up, because we had some freezing temperatures. So far, so good,& I hope it continues to work well. Winter has just started & its not too bad, low temperature wise, so the real test is yet to come ... show more

Easy and quick to setup, arrived just in time for my first freezing night of 26 degrees. Was unsure if working as the water felt cold and plate also did not feel warm to me but it was ice free while a neighbor's was full of ice chips in the morning. this is not a good purchase, first one didnt work, they sent a replacement right away however it doesent perform as advertised and the drinking tray and silo are frequently frozen. a piece of junk in my opinion

    • Nice for using in chicken coops
I have chickens ducks and guinea fowl birds and as most people know chicken coops are not heated, I've had a problem with water freezing in the winter for years, having to carry several gallons of water to the chicken coop several times a day is a real pain in the you know what. I bought this to put my large 3 gallon waterer on last winter, it worked great the water never froze ... show more

    • First one, bad thermostat, plus questionable electrical properties.
Well, the first one was inop as the thermostat never cut the unit off when the temp went up, so it actually evaporated all the water out of the container. Amazon is sending a replacement and hopefully it will work as it should. Not a whole lot to the thing, looks like a stainless steel pie pan with heater in it. It is exactly 12 inches around the bottom lip. Since this is intended for use around poultry, and maybe in a wet environment, it has no markings that you would expect on an electrical device, power requirements, watts used, warnings about not getting the underside wet, or a UL Listing. Not even a brand name on the unit itself, even the box had no writing on it about its contents, so makes me wonder about it's overall quality. ... show more

We bought this product to keep our chicken's water from freezing in our harsh, cold Minnesota winters. Mid winter it can easily get to -20°F. But our water tank was already freezing solid at the beginning of winter at temps of only 20°F ABOVE zero! NOW with this heater the water stays liquid AND it gives off a little extra heat for the coop! ... show more
