  • You need to have some knowledge of how chords are made up.
Not much to dislike, I like that it shows you how chords are made and the names of the chords, like diminished or augmented and such. Excited to use this book in conjunction with memorizing the fret board in order to be able to create chords on the fly.

  • Great balance of theory and application
I have several Jazz guitar books by Joseph Alexander and enjoy them all. The First 100 Jazz Chords for Guitar is excellent. It explains jazz chords in an approachable and systematic way. I have been looking for a resource like this for a long time.

  • Start your Jazz journey here
I highly recommend this book (as well as any of Mr. Alexander's other products) if you are interested in a) learning how jazz functions, b) like the way jazz sounds and conveys emotions, and c) are willing to put in some practice. I am an intermediate player at best and learned open chords, etc to build confidence. Now that I am learning jazz, the best way to describe the benefits of this book is to keep an open mind and ear to what the lessons and techniques will allow you to produce. Like any other instrument, you need to practice what you learn and build on those skills. This book is successful in that and also progresses at a pace that any guitarist can handle. The skills, tones, techniques, and confidence you'll gain by working through this book will get you hooked on the fun that playing jazz can bring. It did for me! ... show more

  • What it says and all you need
As a predominantly rock oriented player this book is right up my alley in terms of approach and structure. In other words, I get it! I am learning something every day. Recommended for beginners in the field looking to broaden some horizons.

  • Hard work but worth the effort
JA's book requires a steady hand and daily practice to master, but is well worth the effort. If you want to acquire a working facility with maj7, min7b5, dom7 and min voicings in positions up and down the neck. This book inspired me to get better, one day at a time. Have already ordered a second one for soloing techniques... well worth the effort..! ... show more

  • Getting practical with the theory
This is a great book! It helped me to understand the foundations, i.e., the theory of why chords are major or minor, or diminished, etc., and why they are named differently, e.g., sus4. On the practical side, the book taught the basic shapes of each type of chord, so now I'm able to understand them and play progressions in a shorter time, with better understanding and better options. ... show more
