Description

Nicknamed "the Girl Gershwin," Tin Pan Alley jazz pianist Dana Suesse was also a composer of film scores and Broadway show tunes. This collection of more than twenty-five piano pieces and songs is the first published folio of her music. Popular songs include "Ho Hum!," "You Oughta Be in Pictures," and "The Night is Young and You're So Beautiful." Piano works include Blue Moonlight, Jazz Nocturne, The Cocktail Suite, Three Compositions for the Piano, 110th Street Rhumba, Serenade to a Skyscraper, and other sparkling melodies.Dana Suesse (1909–87) achieved national prominence with her first publication, Syncopated Love Song. She collaborated with the most prominent songwriters of the 1930s, and her film scores include that of The Seven-Year Itch. Pianist Peter Mintun, Suesse's friend and executor, edited this volume and offers a profile of the composer's life and work. Cabaret pianists, jazz piano enthusiasts, and performers of the Great American Songbook will treasure this unique anthology of twentieth-century piano music. Read more

  • Exceptional Folio of Dana Suesse Works for Piano
Peter Mintun did an exceptional job putting together this folio of works by Dana Suesse. He personally knew her and recorded some of these pieces for You Tube on Dana Suesse's personal piano. Mr. Mintun has a real passion for this body of material and presents beautifully thought out arrangements of Ms. Suesse's original, improvised and often orchestral work. Since he did know her, he offers many personal insights into the evolution of these pieces in the early 20th century. I believe these pieces will continue to grow in popularity over time and experience a rejuvenation of sorts for an entire new generation of fans. We can certainly thank Mr. Mintun for helping to keep these beautiful jazz piano pieces alive and well for future generations. You won't regret purchasing this folio of works by Dana Suesse. My personal favorite is Blue Moonlight. The melody is memorable and some of the syncopated jazz rhythms in the piece and the extended chords remind me of George Gershwin. ... show more

  • lovely compositions from the 30's compiled by a truly great pianist who knows them all !
I sent this book to my sister who lives in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and plays the piano every Friday in the lobby of a hospital in that city. She has practiced quite a number of the pieces of music shown in the book and has played them every Friday to a wildly enthusiastic audience of people with hospital appointments. They listen, go to their appointments and come back to the lobby to stay and listen and/or talk about their best memories of special musical numbers. One man joined my sister in accompaniment on his harmonica to much applause. Peter Mintun has provided a great service in making these lovely melodies available again. ... show more

  • An outstanding publication and great music folio.
Music folios come and go, but this one is as sparkling as the music contained in it. The music of Dana Suesse is given great life by the remarkable word portrait by Peter Mintun contained within the very same folio. An absolute must-have for anyone serious about 20th century music in both classical and popular veins. Better than that, it's just delightful! I express additional thoughts about it on my "Matias Bombal's Hollywood" facebook page in a video review, but Amazon does not allow me to link that here for you. If you wish to search for it, it was posted on March 19, 2014. Matias A. Bombal of "Matias Bombal's Hollywood" ... show more

  • Clear score! Great music!
How did I not know these pieces existed? I guess a lot of people didn't know? While not virtuoso pieces, they are definitely for an advanced player. The pieces are fun to play and beautiful to hear. The typesetting is quite good, and it's easy for me to read the notes from the bench. A word of warning, if you're planning on using the music in teaching. There are no suggested fingerings. Bring a pencil! ... show more

  • The "Girl Gershwin"
Not only the piano solos of Ms Suesse, but a detailed and illustrated biography by a person who knew and studied the composer/performer. The book is well bound to lie flat and clearly printed. Ms Suesse's pieces are a delight to play.
