The GREENWORKS 80V 21" Self-Propelled, Battery-operated MOWER is a winner! This 76-year-old homeowner with a half-acre+ of lawn/landscaping has gone through TWO Honda Self-Propelled Gas mowers — which is not that bad over the course of 32 years. Honda makes an excellent product, and perhaps YOU are finding yourself in the same situation as this reviewer. The price of gasoline is sky-high; I hate transporting gasoline in my Audi TT Roadster, AND I hate STORING flammable stuff in my garage! This season, my faithful HONDA, apparently in need of a carburetor overhaul, would not start. No big deal — except that the nearest service dealer is 20 miles away, the mower will not fit in my roadster, and the shop charges $125 for pickup and delivery (in addition to the $120 charge for the work). No stranger to lithium-battery power tools, I decided to 'GO ELECTRIC' (safe in the knowledge that AMAZON would accept returns should my faith be unfounded). Long Story Short, this Greenworks 80V has exceeded my demanding expectations on all fronts. ASSEMBLY: Quick, fool-proof, clean, and painless. PERFORMANCE: Superior to the best self-propelled gas mower under $700; lighter, quieter, cleaner, and almost as maneuverable as my Audi Roadster. NO MORE EAR PROTECTION, buzzing hands, or irate neighbors on early Sunday mornings. SELF-PROPULSION: Safe, Easy, and wonderfully adaptable. OWNER SATISFACTION: After the initial charge of the easily removable battery (and excellent charging system), this GREENWORKS ran flawlessly for over 30 minutes, which is more than I can say for this senior-citizen operator, who required a few pit stops for hydration and dehydration. Once the job is done, this lightweight mower is a lot easier (and cleaner) to park alongside my Roadster et al. CONCERNS: The battery and charger are large in size and heavy in weight. After 5 sessions, everything works perfectly — but only time will tell whether the ONE-included battery will last a season or two. IF NOT, these batteries go for $80+, which is pricier than gasoline. Both the battery and the charger look rugged and well-engineered. BOTTOM LINE: For under $500, this GREENWORKS 80V is well worth a 30-day trial. I have not had to cut a lawn since the early 1980's. Now in the midst of labor shortages and rising prices for lawn services, I decided to try cutting it myself. This mower was/is a good choice. Our previous lawn service had empty shelves from all the awards they were not winning, so last year we bought the Green Works 40 V blower and trimmer for light clean up duty AFTER the lawn crew was done each week. We liked both of them. So this year we decided to ditch the crew and bought the 80 V Pro self propelled mower. It has so far been a great product. 1. SO much quieter than a gasoline mower. 2. No exhaust fumes 3. No hot engine and muffler to burn yourself on. 4. No pull start 5. Can be stored vertically; no fluids to spill. There are 'feet' built in to hold it upright if you like. 6. No need to cart gas home in a jerry can. 7. It is really quiet. I know I said that before but I thought you may have not heard it. 8. It is lightweight. Most of the time I don't use the self propelled feature. 9. You can use the self propulsion without having to run the blades. Handy if you are moving it a ways. 10. Battery life is good. I did buy an extra battery figuring I would need it, but I could have gotten by without it. My lot is about 1/3 acre. 11. It does not use a lot of electricity. I do not run the batteries down to empty. From about 20-33% charge, it takes about an hour to charge. I threw a meter on the charger; it starts out at about 350 watts and was more like 100 as it was finishing. 12. Wheel height adjustment is a snap. Literally. A spring-loaded lever snaps into 7 different settings. While the self propelled feature is handy, it is a bit quirky as it takes a few seconds for that motor to come up to speed. Whereas a self propelled gas mower is powered by the engine already running so it starts at speed. This is just one of those things you get used to. Not a show stopper. Once that motor is cranking, it has plenty of power and (adjustable) speed, it just takes a second that you may not be accustomed to. The quality of the cut is fine. The 80V motor has all the oomph you need to get through wet or tall grass. While lightweight and easy to manage, it is still heavy enough to leave tire tracks to line up your rows. The bagger works fine, but I usually use the mulching mode. I would buy this again and tell my friends to do the same. The competition is hot in this area, and I only own this one, so maybe there could be something yet better on the market, but this one seems to tick all the boxes and not only am I happy, my Greek chorus of nosey neighbors all seem to like it to.

I am going to keep a running review on this Mower. Update 18 Months: After about 60+ Mowings I am seeing a bit of battery degradation, If i was to estimate I would say I am getting about 85% of the battery capacity versus what it was originally, I think this is fairly normal capacity loss for Lithium Ion Batteries, so I cannot complain. The self propel feature failed at one point but I cleaned out some embedded grass in the wheels and it started working perfectly again. Nothing on the lawn mower has Broken and it still works perfectly. IMHO this is still a 5 star purchase. Update 10 Months: So far after 10 Months and it has done about 40 Mowings on my two properties and has had no issues. I don't know what people are talking about when they say the self propelled motor assist is no good going uphill. I use it on a lot of 35 deg ditch banks and it is a God send. Just put some pressure downward on the handle to give the rear wheels more downward traction and up the hill she goes. Original Review: I Purchased this Mower in Oct 2023 and it has been running perfectly for several months. The noise level is about 1/4 that of my old Briggs Gas mower. It is silent enough that the neighbors don't care about it at 8 am. They hear it for sure but it is not loud enough to be annoying. Several of them have come up to see it because they hear it running for so long and see how much lawn it has cut and just cannot believe that a battery mower can cut this big of a Lawn. I think a few of them are contemplating buying one as they have taken cell phone pictures of it. The mower is heavy, so uphill Mowing would be difficult without the self propelled drive. At the lowest speed setting the forward drive speed is just about a normal walking pace. Any higher and it starts getting too fast. I love that the self propelled feature works with the Main Motor Off. I can just power drive the Mower up the driveway and int the Garage when i am done mowing. One thing I would note is that If you have problems walking at a normal pace because of age or leg problems then this is not the mower for you due to the lack of a really slow speed setting on the Self Propelled Feature. The Mower runs for at least 40 Minutes with On and Off usage of the self propelled feature. It has several protection features, like detecting when the blade is getting bogged down too much and drawing too much power. It will Stop cutting and beep at you. I have only had this happen once or twice when dealing with thick wet grass. The Mulching ability of this Mower is truly impressive. If I Mow the Grass with the Insert left in the Grass is literally turned into powdery bits. There is nothing to Rake up afterwards. I will update this is anything changes. At this price I will be happy if I get at least 5 years out of it without any problems. My old gas Mowers tended to last about 3 years problem free and then they would give problems with the Carburetor and the starting Cord. For me there is just no way I am going back to a Gas Mower and having to deal with Gas Jugs, adding oil and always praying that it starts.

The only reason I'm not giving it five starts is because getting the battery out is a little difficult. You have to press really hard on the lever inside the cover to get the battery to disengage. It would helpful if the instructions said to press down hard until you hear it click. It just says to press the lever, which I did several times not knowing that you have to press it HARD until you hear it click. Also, I gave it four stars, not five, for assembly because the handle doesn't attach easily. You have to line it up just right and push and turn the knob just right for it to latch hold of the threads so you can screw it on. One of it's selling features is the you can easily store it compactly. I don't think I'll ever be unscrewing the hand to lay is down and then set it up and screw the knobs on again. Enough of the negative. Onto what's good about the mower. I have about a 1/4 acre lot, with a fair amount of lawn that needs mowing. The battery life was plenty to mow the whole yard (with some juice left over) on one charge. The charger isn't lightning fast, but it was pretty quick (you don't have to wait hours for the battery to charge). I also did not want a small 13", 14" or even 17" mower. I like my yard to look nice, but I don't enjoy yard work so I want to be able to mow it in under an hour. It took me about 40 minutes because I got the bigger 21" mower (yes, it costs more, but to me it's worth it). It was very light compared to my 21" gas mower. I did have to test it a bit to get the right speed for me with the self-propelled feature. The rabbit fast setting was too fast for me -- I was jogging at that speed. The turtle speed was too slow (see earlier comment about wanting to get the lawn mowed in under an hour). Half-way is what worked best for me, but you have a lot of leeway in between. I did read in the reviews before purchasing where others said it takes a few seconds to get going after you start the motor -- true, but it's really only a second -- and I read where others talked about the need to disengage the self-propel bar before turning corners and the delay before the wheels stop turning. You do need to let go two steps before you turn for the back wheels to stop turning, but within a couple of passes I was used to its cadence and knew when to let go of the bar. It cut the grass really well. The adjustability of the height is easy and super convenient. Just pull the green handle on the right side and ALL of the wheels move to the same height; that's a real plus in my book, i.e., not having to adjust the height of each wheel individually. It does make some noise, but it's a lot quieter than a gas mower. The bag is easy to empty and I like how it blows the grass to the opposite side so the clippings didn't all come back out on the lawn when the bag was full. Does it cost more than a 21" gas mower with similar features, yeah, a bit, but I don't have to buy gas and fill the tank each time. That's a definite plus! I really like it!

Mower has exceeded my expectations in functioning and operating ease of use. I went into this blind not having used an electric mower in more than 30 years. It has plenty of power where it is most needed. Mower automatically adjusts it's speed as to the length and thickness of the grass. The 80 volt battery takes about an hour to charge and lasts, in the case of my lawn as long as it takes me to finish mowing, about 45 minutes. Other lawns will more than likely alter that number. I use it just for my lawn. I have mowed with bag and without and as my lawn thins through the year I find going bagless is really lengthens battery time. Easy push button to start everytime. The mower is powerful but light but not wimpy. Definitely some hefty. My only negative is I'm not a quick walker and the slowest self-propel speed is still a little fast for me. My favorite aspects. No Fuel, No Oil, No Cords, No Fuss!

Easty to assemble out of the box: take all the small stuff out first (e.g., battery, charger, cardboard inserts); turn the box on the end with the rear of the mower and roll it out. I replaced a rather good gas-powered mower that gave me several years of service, but it broke down. I spent extra to get a mulch kit for it. This mower is packaged ready to mulch. The blade is "factory" sharp--no one wants to cut themselves unpacking and get blood on everything--I left it that way for the first trial. My grass was tall because my gas mower broke down, and I waited for this mower to arrive. The drive takes a little getting used to; this is not necessarily a negative in my opinion. Rear-wheel drive is a plus on hills. The transmission has its own motor--not belt-driven like my gas mower. The speed is adjustable, which is a feature you want. The drive takes a few seconds to come up to speed--no problem in my mind. When disengaged, the drive won't let you pull the mower back right away--it takes about 2 seconds to "relax." The remedy is to stop the drive NEAR the end of your run and just push it out (the mower is light enough), then you will be able to pull the mower back for the turn to the next run or pull it back. I have to emphasize that this mower is lighter than the gas-powered alternative, so mowing around bushes--where you're going back and forth--is easy enough without the drive. Then you won't have to wait to pull the mower back. It took me less than 15 minutes to figure all this out and get used to the mower. As for mulching, I soon noticed that this mower mulches much better than my gas mower with the special blade. Clipping were less than an inch long. Maybe it's because of the deck design. I'm planning to sharpen the blade before the next cut. That should improve efficiency and the quality of the cut. SIDE NOTE: I sprayed the underside of the mower with dry lubricant to aid in cleaning and protect the parts underneath. As advertised, the 4-amp battery was fully charged in a little over an hour after I had ran it out.

UPDATE: I purchased this mower less than a year ago. I've maybe used it 15 times. The last two times I used it, it wouldn't start initially. It would just beep. The first time, It eventually started just by trying a few different simple things (Removing the battery, etc). The second time, I spent about 30 minutes trying to get it to run and it just wouldn't. Full charge on the battery, sitting on level ground in my driveway. no blade obstructions. Called customer support and waited an hour to get somebody on the line. Of course as soon as I get an agent on the phone and he asks me to try starting it, it starts. It has some kind of electronics issue and I'm sure it'll happen again. Original review below. There are lots of positive reviews here, so I must be missing something. Maybe my expectations are too high? I have lots of greenworks 80v tools and really like them- leaf blower, string trimmer, hedge trimmer... The last gas powered lawn machine I had was my Honda mower, and I was really excited about this one. The greenworks mower just isn't as good. I've had the mower for a few months now and have mowed probably 6 times with it... and I can tell I'm never going to be happy with the tradeoffs vs my gas mower. The problems are: 1) Not enough suction/updraft to pull grass up and cut it after the front wheels have run over the grass. You have to go over your grass twice to stand a chance, but even still, there are strips of uncut grass left over. To be fair, I like to cut my grass taller than most people do, since it's more drought resistant that way. So maybe I need to cut it like a golf course fairway to get the necessary suction? that would be a deal breaker though. 2) The mulching function is not usable. It leaves clumps of grass clippings all over the lawn. Comparing the blade to my honda, which does a great job mulching, the greenworks mower only has one very small blade, whereas the honda's blade is much wider, has more curvature to it, and has a second blade above the main cutting blade, which keeps the clippings suspended in the air for mulching. The mower then lacks the power to pick up all of the clippings it leaves behind (see #1). I get that they need to put a dinky blade in this thing to reduce rotating mass and maximize battery charge life... but forget about mulching with it. 3) the feature on this mower that senses heavy load and ramps up RPM to compensate sounds good on paper. But in reality, it requires the mower to bog down first, before it knows it needs to ramp up power. Often, I just hit a small patch of thick grass, and by the time the mower reacts and ramps up power, I'm already past the area where I needed the power. So I find it mostly worthless. I do wish that I could keep it in the high RPM mode all the time though. I know i'd sacrifice battery life, but at least the thing would cut the dang lawn. 4)The self-propelled feature isn't worth the extra money. It's very laggy. It takes probably 2-3 seconds before it actually kicks in... most of the time when I need it, it's to get the mower moving at the beginning of a pass, where I'm unable to stand directly behind to mower to push it (i.e., there's a shrub in my way). It takes so long to ramp up that it's basically not worth bothering. Also, even at the slowest speed, it's too fast- the mower isn't able to keep up and adequately cut the grass at that speed. So save your money and buy the unit without the self-propelled feature. 5) the mower lacks the power to kick the clippings to the back of the bag. So once the bag is about half full, grass starts clogging up the chute and falling back into the cutting area, leaving grass clippings all over the lawn and bogging down the motor... and again, it doesn't have the suction needed to lift the clippings off the grass when you go over it a second time. 6) compared to the honda, it's just lightweight and plasticy. It doesn't seem durable to me. 7) the wheels seem to have a spring-loaded suspension to them that allows the deck height to change as you go over bumps. I don't know why they designed it that way, but the wheels squeak a lot, and don't cut the grass evenly. I know I'm being hard on it, but this is my honest feedback. If you have a gas mower that works well, keep it and save your money. I love the idea of this thing- no messing with bad gas, oil changes, spark plugs, air filters, cleaning carbs, no exhaust fumes/air pollution or trips to the gas station. I don't need to wear hearing protection because it's really quiet. But it just doesn't seem ready for prime time to me. I'd be willing to pay twice this price for an electric mower that works as well as my gas mower, but I can't seem to find one on the market. So this one is going back to amazon, or going on craigslist if it's too late to return it.

This is my second electric push mower and a MUCH better experience! I struggled with the decision to get a 21" or 25" but I have a very small yard so the 21" won. I LOVE this mower! My previous one really felt underpowered and eventually I moved back to a gas powered mower. After recommendation from a neighbor that has a Greenworks push mower, I decided to try it again. This one feels very powerful, even through my tall, thick St. Augustine Pro Vista lawn. The weight of the mower is perfect! It's heavy enough not to be managed by the grass, yet light enough to maneuver easily. The metal deck makes it feel like much better quality than my last one which was plastic. The cut is VERY clean and even, the yard looks great! My biggest concern was the mowing speed. After reading some reviews, I was worried it might not go slow enough for me. As I mentioned, I have a very small yard and I want to mow it slowly. I read that it goes too fast so before starting, I slid the control all the way down to the slowest "turtle" setting. That was TOO slow. I can't imagine anyone needing to go any slower than that but whatever... Just playing around with it, I also moved the speed to fast. Wow, if you have thinner grass, that would really get the job done quickly! I love how safe and quiet it is too. Plus no more having to worry about the gas and the yearly oil, plug and filters changing.
