I am surprised by how well this works. As I have a Greenworks 40V vacuum, blower, hedge trimmer, and pole saw, this seemed like a good choice. An 8.0 Amp, 40V battery I purchased in the past held more than enough charge to handle dethatching my small yard. Of note is that the bag that attaches to this device requires very frequent emptying, and even doing so, enough thatch was left that I used a Greenworks 60V mower to bag what was left rather than raking.

Works like a charm!
Size: 40V Dethatcher / Scarifier (Tool Only) Gen 2
This device worked great. It came with the scarifier in place, which I used (I did not try the included thatcher adapter). Assembly was not at all challenging, with fairly good illustrations. Height adjustment is simple. I cut the grass low (second lowest setting on my Greenworks 80V mower), then set the scarifier unit to the second lowest setting, and it worked beautifully. My intention was to put slits in the lawn before seeding. Reading reinforced my intuition that soil contact is paramount in fostering seed germination and growth. I believe that to be true, because I'm pretty sure I heard the grass seeds parachuting from my spreader whooping and hollering and high-fiving each other when they hit the scarified ground (LOL). The unit left tidy slits without destroying the lawn. One caveat is that the ground should be dry. On very dry lawn the unit kicked up some dust, but not a lot. On the other hand, I had some areas where drainage is suboptimal and the soil was damp, and the unit had a tendency to "grab" and pull/jerk me and tear up the lawn somewhat. This can be completely avoided by limiting use to dry turf. The unit (again, this is with the scarifier adapter) pulled a lot of thatch out of the lawn, and removing the thatch was ninety percent of the job. The unit itself is very light, tends to pull itself along, and is remarkably easy to use as long as you avoid moist grass, where it misbehaves as described above. I elected to suck up the thatch with my Greenworks mower, which was quite labor intensive, requiring two or three passes (a higher-RPM gasoline mower might be more effective). A leaf rake would undoubtedly be effective, though I'm not sure the lawn would have the neat crisp appearance that mowing provides. Since I ended up mowing the lawn to pick up the thatch, I thought I might skip a step and tried using the scarifier on uncut grass. This worked pretty well, but the end result was that the grass looked a little scruffy compared with the lawn that was pre-cut and later mowed after scarifying. One of the best things about this whole process is that the lawn looked quite good after the process, which I appreciated. A lot of lawns appear torn up for weeks after aerating, and I was happy that I was able to avoid that scenario. My last comment is battery life. I had to charge the battery three times to scarify my lawn (half acre lot, of which about half is lawn), However, I am reluctant to comment here because the 4 Ah battery I have from my other tools is probably going on ten years old, and very likely has reduced output at this point. Overall, this is a definite 5-star purchase for performance and ease of use.

Defective Battery release

I like the product. But the battery is really hard to release from the thatcher. You have to hold down the thatcher and pull and pull till your face turns red. When you squeeze the release button the wedge on the battery doesn't go in all the way and the battery won't come out on both on my batteries. For this I give no stars, and 2 thumbs down. I already wrote a review and no comment from the seller

Very good little machine, lightweight, easy to put together and works really well, although I have only used the dethatcher. I bought it without the battery as I already had 40V batteries from my other greenworks tools. Noise-wise it is not noisy at all and really good value for money. Power is good and collection is very good as well.

The tool works fairly well. Kind of feel it needs to be not abused to last long. It definitely doesn’t have the power of a corded but it’s adequate if you’re careful using it. The main benefit is not having to navigate the cord strewn across your lawn. However, every single tool needs a different voltage battery so you end up having to buy new batteries that sit forever mostly unused because there’s no cross compatibility. Complete scam.

Nice for a small 7500 sq foot area

I bought this model because I already had a 40v battery. While it was easy to put together, the machine’s handle was already scratched! I used it anyways to see what it would do. If you have ever used a thatching rake you know what a pain it is. This little machine took up a lot of thatch. What would have taken me HOURS took me 45 minutes to do 1/3 of my lawn before it ran out of power. I only gave it three stars because the bag that catches is tiny! You should plan ahead and have a tarp ready to empty it out after a pass or two. I also tried it without the bag catcher and raked it up. Even doing some raking was better than using a manual thatch rake. I can’t wait to see how my lawn turns out in the spring after doing this.

Apparently the price drop was a big enough incentive to get people to pull the trigger and go ahead and purchase the De Thatcher alone without the GreenWorks battery and charger; before they raise prices with Chinese tariffs. The GreenWorks website has been sold out for weeks at the same discounted price that amazon is selling them for. Most people who are buying only the tool, either already have a GreenWorks 40v battery that they bought with another tool, like the GreenWorks Snowblower ( that I have), or people will save money and buy a GreenWorks 40v knockoff battery where you can easily buy three 40v batteries for the same price as just one GreenWorks battery. The GreenWorks De Thatcher was delivered two day with no problems. The packing was exceptional with no missing parts. The assembly instructions came in a large fold out that was easy to read and the De Thatcher was extremely easy to put together with no tools necessary, and the handle will fold down for easy storage. If you are not familiar, with the difference between the included De Tatcher and the Scarifier attachment, it comes with the Scarifer attachment head already installed, and you will probably want to change it to the De Thatcher head. You also probably want to use the machine without the collection bag as it is easier to just collect the dead grass with a rake, rather than continually dumping the collection bag. You should definitely watch a customer review Gideon before buying this De Thatcher. I highly recommend this product but would not pay attention to the one star Amazon reviews. The majority of the bad reviews are from buyers who are upset they that they did not receive a battery and charger, even though the listing has the lowest price for Istanbul the tool alone , it seems like they are trying to get GreenWorks to send them a new battery if they take down their ne star review.

POWER! Wow

I ordered a smaller, corded one and it never came, so I canceled the order and quickly ordered this one without paying close attention, having no idea it was cordless. It didn't have a battery or charger, so I ordered those next and put it to work on my PNW moss-infested lawn. My lawn has never been de-thatched, so it was a giant, flat, bird's nest and I was very skeptical. As I de-thatched, once in a while, it appeared that smoke was coming from the motor, but I checked carefully and it wasn't; it was just dust from the ground. The motor and battery just kept cranking away with tons of power. I went over my yard once and it produced bales of thatch and moss, then I went over it again and the same thing. I'm very happy with how this worked-out and I'm gonna stay on top of this now lol; keep it de-thatched. I stretched a bungee across the bars to hold the bag door open and not use the bag this way. Otherwise the bag would fill in literally ten seconds in my case. I wore safety goggles and long pants to be safe and this worked for me; probably not recommended by the manufacturer. Love this machine!
