Moved to a house with the main bedroom having a half-moon window facing east. The light and heat coming though the window was so bad I usually slept in a different room. Wasn't sure how to cover it up so I bought this product. It did require some cutting to fit. Not the easiest material to cut but overall it was easy to install. When we bought this house 9 years ago, my daughter was 2 and needed a dark room. I don't know if these room-darkening fan shades didn't exist yet then or if I was too hasty in my search, but I ended up with a paper-thin version that blocked direct rays but didn't darken. So I also got a large piece of foamboard and cut to size to go behind the fan shade. The flimsy fan kept flopping over so for the last few years its just been the foamboard. This item blocks the light as well, if not better, than that setup had. Because it's thicker, though, installation was a bit more of a pain. It was difficult to cut to size - I got about 1/3 of the way through with a box cutter and was still slowly sawing my way through when my husband came out with a very sharp knife his friend handmade with which he was able to slice through. And again a few minutes later when I realized I forgot to account for the width of the fan when making my calculation (the instructions even mention that, I just forgot). And I had been hoping to get away with not using the adhesive strips, but I suppose also because it's so thick, it didn't want to stay open so I did have to stick the ends down. I'm pleased with the result. My camera automatically brightens dark pictures so that first pic doesn't do this shade justice - so as I was writing this I just had the thought to take one from a distance. But there's a cat on my lap so I can't move to a better angle. Picture for proof (pardon the silly collar - it's anti-camo to save the birds; shes forgiven me).
