  • Good bang for buck.
Bought a two pack for $90. I've purchased a good variety of budget kayak racks in the past and I will say the fold down ones are more preferred by me. They look better and I'm confident they do allow a little better gas mileage. But besides the folding abilities these feel just as solid if not better than any other pair I've had. The locking mechanism for up/down position is flexible and reliable. These clamp onto your rails like any other kayak rack. As a saltwater user I'm sure these will rust like every other paid I've had. I'm usually replacing racks every couple of years with regular use, which really isn't that bad. ... show more

  • Great way to transport kayaks/paddleboards
I've strapped the kayak's directly to the roof rack before, and while it works, it's kind of a pain. I thought about getting a set of fixed kayak carrier racks, but I'd have to take them off the roof to be able to drive into the garage (which would be a pain). These are the best of both worlds, They hold the kayak much better, and then they fold out of the way so that I can park in the garage without hitting the garage door. ... show more

  • Make sure the rails on the luggage rack will accept these
The rack looks like it will fit most top luggage racks. The sponge foam pads disintegrated during installation so don’t count on those to fill in the gaps between the clamps and the rack rails. I’m looking for an over the counter replacement. It needs to be a sturdy but dense foam. Over it’s acceptable and I’ve used it once. Whatever your putting it on and putting on it. Make sure you have secure places for both the bow and stern lines. kayaks and other small boats must be secured the last thing you need is a 30 to 50 pound plastic projectile smashing into another car at highway speeds. Used ancore points on the metal parts of the bumper or frame if possible. The time and caution you spend on this is insurance against accidents and or law suits. ... show more

  • Perfect for my Sequoia
It’s summer time! Time to bring the kayaks out to the water and these racks make it easy to transport them. Before I got these I was using a different style mount for my kayak, they type that are like little feet that the kayaks rested on. With these the kayaks sit securely and on their side, super easy to tie them down and the racks fold down when not transporting anything so you can leave them on all year! ... show more

  • Solid, quality construction and everything you need
For quite a while, I've wanted a car rack for my kayaks. I have only kayaked in the bay that's near my house, which I don't need to drive to. This pair of racks for 2 kayaks will really expand my kayaking experience and I'm truly thrilled. Because we are still having freezing weather in the Pacific Northwest, I haven't yet installed the racks on my car, but I have examined them carefully and I am impressed. I have no reservations about giving them a 5 star rating. Each of the 4 J-bars is solid steel with good weight -- nothing flimsy about them. They are painted solid black and covered with thick rubber padding in the right places. The installation instructions are very clear with good illustrations. Installation looks to be quite simple -- just clamp the J-bars onto the cross bars of your car's luggage rack using the provided screw-on clamps. I like how they fold down, so when not in use, you don't see them sticking high up above the roof rack. Everything you need for 2 kayaks is included -- 4 J-bars (2 for each kayak), 4 straps to hold and cinch down each kayak to each J-bar, and 4 ropes with hooks to secure the front and back of the kayaks to the front and back of your car. This is a well-designed and well-made product that I would have expected to sell for quite a bit more than its listed price. I can't wait for the weather to warm up so I can start taking my yaks to more areas! ... show more

  • Generally good quality J-hooks. Two issues though
My wife and I are avid kayakers, and I was really looking forward to receiving these one from GPT Rack since our older ones are rusting and degrading. Here are my impressions of these J-hooks post assembly and install on our Kia Sorento (with removable crossbeams). Pros: This set of hooks comes with everything you need to mount the J-hooks and secure them to your car (assuming you have crossbars). There are 4 tie-down straps and 4 rope hooks for securing kayaks, and also two trunk strap mounts tie the back rope hooks down on (if you lack an area to secure the hooks in back). These J-hooks as a whole are fairly sturdy and have padding in the right places. Whereas our older set had padding "cushions" on the bottom curve and very top curve only, this set has padding on the bottom curve and sides where our kayaks actually rest. The rubber base is more pliable than my old set, so I anticipated our kayaks sitting more secure on these ones. Assembly was pretty easy once we figured out where each piece went, and I liked that the company provides rubber spacers to prevent scratching on the crossbars. Cons: There are two primary issues with this product, and enough for me to take 2 stars off because my fingers still hurt from dealing with one issue and I was irritated beyond belief today because of the other. The primary means of securing these J-hooks to the crossbeams comes in the form of a small twist knob with threadlock paste on it (to make it more secure). These things absolutely suck to put it bluntly. Our old set just had nuts that just required a wrench. This twist-knob method makes it difficult to secure onto the crossbeam, and that difficulty is compounded if you have to make positional adjustments after securing the crossbeam to your car. With little clearance between the knobs and car roof you have to tighten them (while angling yourself in weird contorted positions) - and there is heavy resistance you have to counter to make these tight. If you have permanent crossbeams this attachment method will prove more difficult to deal with. The second primary issue involves the strap positioners. When your kayaks are high up on an SUV in the upright position, it’s near impossible to position the straps within the strap positioners. My wife and I were in hot sunny 90 degree humid weather trying to coordinate positioning the straps within the positioners after a long day on the lake - and it was a brutal experience overall. To the point where we’re done with J-hooks after dealing with these. Final comments: These are quality J-hooks despite the cons I’ve listed above. If you do purchase these, and have two kayaks, I recommend getting a longer strap to wrap around the center of both kayaks. There was some concerning wobble with these we noticed, and traveling at higher speeds without an extra security strap around both to better secure them was concerning to us. Overall I’m rating these 3/5 stars based on our experience using these. ... show more
