I haven't spent much time riding this scooter yet but I am enjoying every minute of it so far. I've ridden Bird/Lime rental scooters before so I have something to compare from as far as performance goes. Overall, the main advantages with the rental scooters are slightly better power and range, but at the cost of being heavier, not to mention that you never really know what condition the scooter will be in before riding; the battery level, brakes, other adjustments may be less than ideal since these things are getting a lot of use and bearing the elements outside. I can see why people like these because it is a low commitment option compared to having your own scooter (although over time it's obviously cheaper to have you own). Personally, I much prefer having my own, where I can maintain it myself and always know it's ready to go when I am. That being said, just like any machine (even bicycles) there is some self maintenance that is unavoidable. Performance: ( I am a 160 pound rider) On my last ride I went about 5 miles through a hilly college campus with lots of elevation change, starting from a full charge. The scooter performed well with good acceleration and only struggled on the steeper hills (not sure what angle the hill was, but it's difficult to walk up these hills for a long period of time). The brakes worked great as well and I always felt like I was in control (see suggestions below). When I returned I still had 3 out of 4 bars, even though I suspect that it may be approaching 2 bars (see cons below). The handling was nimble enough to move around other pedestrians with ease, and yet still sturdy at higher speeds. I did not get a reliable top speed measurement since I wasn't able to find a stretch of flat road that was long enough, but even so, I reaching about 16 mph easily without full throttle. (rider weight, hill angle, and battery level will be the main deciding factors for top speed) Pros: -Great performance/quality for the price -Sturdy construction, without being too heavy -Simple/ergonomic design Cons: -Battery gauge could have more bars to help show battery level more accurately. *It will also dip down temporarily while going up steep hills and then back up once you get to level ground. This is normal! Every battery powered device will do this when there is a high demand for electricity. You are fighting gravity going up hills which takes a lot of power depending on your weight. -Throttle is very sensitive, which makes it hard to engage the cruise control. To enable cruise control, hold a steady (very steady) speed for a few seconds and then you will be able to remove your hand from the throttle while it maintains that speed. To disengage, bump the throttle and it will immediately turn off. (I did not know about this feature before I got this scooter but it is very nice to have) Suggestions: -This scooter comes with a "safety pin" which screws into the scooter (near the red latch which folds up the scooter). I would definitely use this pin, especially if you are going on a long and/or bumpy ride. It's not technically necessary, but it gives me piece of mind knowing there's an extra solid piece of steel keeping the scooter from folding up when I don't want it to. The only problem is that it's annoying to have to do frequently. The next design should have a quick-release safety pin. -The first thing I did when I realized that the magnetic brake and disk brake were controlled by the same brake handle was add another brake handle on the other side next to the throttle (see picture) so that I could control them separately (like the version 1). I just used a standard bicycle brake handle and it worked like a charm. They probably went with a simpler design like this to make it more ergonomic/easier for the rider, but I like having the option to use either brake independently or together. As a side note, the magnetic brake works great overall and provides good stopping power, but works less and less as you slow down. This is why I typically only use the disk brake at lower speeds and when I need to come to a complete stop. ***Only do this if you are comfortable/competent with making such modifications and know that your safety is your own responsibility (not mine). Clarifications: (almost lost one star for this) -One thing that annoyed me was the implication that there was a gearing system included with this scooter and that "gear" 1 would climb hills better while "gear" 2 would be better for top speed. I COULD BE WRONG, but I'm preeettty sure(99.99%) that this is B.S. and the 1 and 2 refer to an electronic power limiter. Don't get me wrong, I think this is a great feature to be able to bump it down to 1 for someone who is learning and/or a young rider, but let's call it what it is and not be misleading. I do not plan on opening it up to confirm this, but I have tried going into "gear" 1 to go up hills better and have noticed that "gear" 2 is better for both hill climbing and top speed. *Update 4/1/19: There is a weird resonance vibration that happens at one very specific speed/throttle. It doesn't really bother me, but it is strange to go from almost completely silent to a louder vibrating sound. I think this might just be a thing that happens with variable electric motors, since this also happens with my electric bicycle. I will update again if anything else develops. *Update 4/23/19: I'm still commuting daily on this scooter and enjoying every ride. My tire pressure was getting low so I had to pump them both up. The back one is easy, but the front one is quite difficult to get just right. The tire valve adapter that comes with the scooter works fine, but it is hard to remove it fast enough to not let air out of the tire. I had to practice several times to try and do it as fast as I could and eventually got it. What I would recommend: pump it up above 50 psi ( I did around 60) and then remove the adapter as quickly as you can. It will let some air out and hopefully stop around 50 psi. I gave the back tire a squeeze with my hands after setting it to 50 psi and then compared it to the front to make sure it was close enough. This scooter definitely rides different depending on tire pressure. I can go faster with normal pressure, but also feel more bumps. Lower pressure will give you a smoother ride, but limit your speed (and range). I would check this at least every two weeks, but just know that if you release air for more than a second then you will likely already be too low and need to pump it back up. Great for the price.
Edit: Just 30 days past the 90 day warranty, the battery in my scooter failed. I guess I'm not surprised for such a low cost device. Good batteries are expensive. A new battery from Gotrax is about one hundred dollars. Yuck. ----- I've had the Gotrax GXL V2 for about a week now. Summary: This scooter is a bargain at sub-$300. Build quality is quite good. It comes mostly assembled. All you need to do is attach the brake cable and the handlebars. Go to the Gotrax website for assembly videos and instructions. The instruction manual that came with the scooter is out-of-date. There was a little bit of paint inside the threads for the safety pin which made it a little difficult to install the first time. Everything else seemed great. I gave it a full charge before riding the first time. It was mostly charged out of the box and only required about an hour on the charger. The light on the charger turns green when the battery is full. I did a 10 mile ride on residential streets and a bike path. I weigh 160lbs and the terrain here is mostly flat. I was at maximum speed for most of the ride, and returning home the battery gauge was between one and two bars, depending on the throttle. It was at two bars cruising and would drop to one bar when accelerating. I didn't notice any slowdown of the scooter through the trip. The speedometer shows a top speed of between 15 and 16 mph. However, I believe this is generous and the actual stop speed is closer to 13 mph. Regardless, this seems like a reasonable speed on a vehicle with small wheels. The scooter has two "gears" as Gotrax calls them. They really aren't gears, they are just the controller limiting your top speed. Speed 1 is the default when you first turn the scooter on. Its top speed is about 8 mph which is perfect for navigating sidewalks or anywhere that you'd have to be careful when riding. Speed 2 tops out at an indicated 15 mph, but I believe it is closer to 13 mph. The acceleration is quite good for a 250 watt motor. I have no doubt that the motor is capable of moving the scooter faster than 15 mph, but the controller keeps you there or below. Not only is that safer, but much easier on the batteries and all the components on the scooter (tires, bearings, welds, etc.). I think Gotrax did a great job here. As for range, I'm perfectly happy. My 10 mile trek was about as far as I'd want to go without a break. You'll see some poor reviews complaining about range. Keep a few things in mind. It is possible to have a defective battery that could cause severely limited range. Open a problem report with Gotrax and get it replaced under warranty. However, even with a good battery, range will vary with several factors. The heavier the rider, the more energy required to move them. A large part of the energy expended is accelerating to speed and climbing hills. The heavier you are, the more battery that takes to do. If you weigh 80 pounds and live where it is flat and you never have to stop, you will get great range. If you weigh 220 pounds (scooter's rated maximum) and live where there are many steep hills and lots of stop-go, then you will get much less range. That's just the way the science works. I did notice that Gotrax has fixed some things that people have complained about in the past. There was a bug that if you press and hold the power button to turn off the scooter, if you keep it pressed too long it will turn back on. They fixed that bug. Also, I was impressed to see that they filled the tubes with some kind of sealant from the factory. I bought a bottle of "slime" for these tires but didn't need it. Thanks Gotrax. The scooter uses regenerative (engine) braking on the front wheel and has a disk brake on the rear. I wish that the regen brake had a separate button to engage as that would make smooth braking easier. Even the way it is, it's fairly easy to brake quickly. Just lean back a bit. But when the regen brake kicks in you can really feel it slow down. Practice braking a bit before venturing out into traffic. Also, I really dislike the throttle lever. It is a little thumb-operated lever where you push to accelerate. It is very difficult to hold a constant speed at anything other than "full throttle" because as the scooter bounces, so does your hand. That also makes using the cruise control difficult because the throttle needs to be held constant for 5-10 seconds. Good luck doing that at anything other than full throttle. Those are my only negatives. Gotrax did an excellent job in designing this scooter. All the electronics are in the handlebars. The battery is very easy to replace. It is fairly light, smooth and stable. A great buy at this price. ... show more

Great Scooter with Great Support
Review: I purchased this scooter back in August as a way to get around campus. The scooter works great and its range and speed make it a perfect way to get around. Being able to fold it to carry inside to charge makes it absolutely amazing to use. The range is around 7 miles on a hilly campus but it handles both the terrain and the weather well. The scooter easily reaches its max speed of 15.5 MPH (it does drop when going up a hill or when low on power). My commute is around 3 miles (one-way) and to be able to take the scooter that distance at a relatively fast speed, combined with its lightweight design and ease of use make it a really great purchase. Product Support: A few months in my scooter experienced an issue where it would not charge when plugged into the adapter. The battery simply was not receiving a charge. Luckily, the scooter comes with a 2 year warranty for parts. I contacted support, and Kayla from the support team responded promptly and helped me troubleshoot the issue. Within a few days, they had already shipped a new battery to me to replace. After replacing the battery, my scooter went back to working as normal. This was one of the best support experiences I've had with a product and they helped me to resolve the issue completely. Overall: A great product for commutes around 7 miles with great product support. The scooter has a relatively fast speed (averages ~12 MPH on a hilly campus). It charges within 6 hours and is light enough to carry inside to charge. It is very light to carry and is very easy to use. Good first scooter, TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE
In summary, this is a good introductory scooter for anyone interested in using a scooter for any sort of commuting approximately 30-40 min one way via scooter (so you have the same amount of time to get back). Ride history: I am 200lb, 5ft 5 in, living in a busy metropolitan. I have commuted about 8 miles a day, 4 times a wk, for about 5 months. There are plenty of potholes/ cracks on the streets, and I feel every bit of it. I even feel the traffic lane paint on the street. The scooter rides fine when its working. Maneuverability: At 26lbs the scooter is manageable for me. I live in a 3rd fl walk up with a tight stairwell, and I frequently knock into the wall/ door with the handlebars because of it. I will somethings lift the scooter from the handlebars, or stem with foot mount just fine. Riding up/down an escalator is manageable; will sometimes rest one end with my foot to balance the scooter better. Range: I tend to carry a backpack and gets close to the 220lb limit. Will comfortably get 9-10 miles on a single charge. Problems: Issues I ran into were tough in part because I was inexperienced in these devices. Flats: Had my first flat, 3 months of riding this scooter. I know people who ran into similar problems in that time frame. Taking it to a scooter shop, the screws were so tight they ended up threading them, and I needed to get a screw extractor. Several people I know ran into this issue as well and I had to loan them my extractor kit. Also ended up buying a tire pump, and tire irons, but that comes with the experience of owning scooters/ bikes. Brakes: Brakes started to become less responsive about 4 months of riding. Adjusting them took time, and I never got them back to the way I remembered when I first got it. So I got use to just tapping on the brakes and sometimes just jump off for a quicker stop. Riding fast between intersections/ street lights is a little dangerous anyway, so having reasonable speed is tempering. Console controller: At about 7-8 months (recently), the scooter will shut down at 1/4 battery, and give me an error sign “30E”. Couldn’t find anything on the manual/ online. Finally got an anwer from customer service that its the console controller, ordered a new one, but is now shutting down at 1/2 battery. Went back to customer service (CS), and latest response was all sales are final. While I understand that risk as shown on the product page, I do not think I should be liable for eating the cost of a scooter part which the customer service told me I need to replace. Still trying to work towards a resolution. Terrible customer service: The CS has been terrible through all the issues I have had with the scooter. Even with help for a flat/ brakes, I go through a couple emails before getting any sort of answer/ explanation for it. I frequently receive automated responses, and I’m not talking about the ones writing “Thank you, we’ll get back to you in 3 business days” or “Thank you for the additional information.” Some automated responses include offers for an exchange or refund, and I would get this several times in the same email thread with one CS. Gotrax only offers a 90 day included warranty. You also have 30 days from purchase for a refund. When I asked for help re: the controller and I preemptively included that I bought the scooter from amazon. The response was to contact amazon for assistance. That alone is ridiculous because amazon doesn’t offer the technical support for a Gotrax scooter. Some responses were sarcastic. When I asked about the scooter controller and the diff between “GXL V2” and “GXL V2 with bell”, I get a 2 word response “The bell”; the photos are the same, and was therefore confusing and warranted explanation. The CS alone is enough for me to decide to never support Gotrax again. People I know have also received similar CS experiences/ misinformation. Pretty solid choice
I spent at least a month going back and forth trying to decide which brand scooter to get and what features were most important to me. I really liked the idea of pneumatic tires more than solid. I am not relying on this scooter for actual commuting so I wasn't so worried about getting a flat. Also people ride bikes all the time and don't have solid tires (I do understand it is easier to replace a bike tire than a scooter tire). I guess I figure if I get a flat I'll take it down to my local bike shop and pay them to change it out for me. No issues with that so far. The scooter arrived undamaged and all pieces were accounted for. Getting the handle bars into the stem is definitely not easy. It was frustrating as some others have commented. I didn't think it would be a big deal but it kind of is. I almost cut the wire in half trying to jam the handle bars in and get it to line up with the screw holes. There is literally no room to bunch up the wire to get it to fit. I finally did get it pushed in and lined up after about 15 minutes. Had it taken any longer and I would have been really upset. Once that was done though everything was good to go. The battery showed 3 bars out of the box and the manual tells you to fully charge before riding. I plugged in the scooter and tried to turn it on and it shut off. I did this a couple of times and got a little worried as I expected to be able to adjust the settings while it was plugged in. Luckily my 8 yr old daughter is smarter than me and told me to unplug it and try it. That worked and it powered up fine. The scooter is very solid, well built and doesn't look like a toy at all. It feels like something you can rely on, time will tell if that is true. Ultimately if the build is solid but the electronics are junk it doesn't matter how sturdy it is, if it won't go anywhere. I dont have any issues with the electronic locking system. I thought that might be a pain but it's not. I think you can disable it but its such a none issue for me I just left it on. I have tried the cable lock yet but do like having that option available to me if I need to run into the store for a few minutes. Others have noted it is useful to lock up your helmet. Throttle is one of the few areas that need improvement. I don't like the cruise control at all. The fact that you can't disable it and that it engages automatically is very frustrating. I just dont like having it engage automatically after a few seconds and would rather I had the option to manually turn it on/off. It can be a pain to try and focus on maintaining a certain speed for a few seconds to get it to engage. If you hit a bump while you are trying to maintain a speed for the cruise control it seems to start the count over. I hate that. I find myself focusing on getting the cruise control engaged instead of paying attention to driving it and that is dangerous. I hate the kick start and you do have to press on the throttle a couple times to get it going. I think this is a safety feature but when you are at a stop light and it turns green it is frustrating to get the scooter going. Once it is going its fine but there have been times i feel like I have basically pushed it across the street before it kicks in. The ride is smooth and solid. It is fast and there is good torque, it isn't shy about getting up most hills. I am 165lbs and it gets up to 20 in no time. I have no issues with the ride and it is fun. Overall I do like this scooter alot, especially for the price. I cant really comment on range or battery life. I use this scooter mainly just for recreation. I work remotely and it is nice to go for a scooter ride at lunch time to get some fresh air. I have noticed that a normal cruise with some slight hills and fluctuating speed between 10-20mph I lose 1 bar after about 4.5 miles. I normally don't go farther than that. I would guess you would easily get 10-15 miles on a charge without issue. I would buy the scooter again despite some of its weak point (cruise control and throttle) because I dont think in this price range there is a perfect scooter. I did get a good deal on this during a flash sale which is why i pulled the trigger on this model. I have had the scooter 2 weeks and put 21 miles on it. I hope this helps someone out there looking for a scooter. It is alot of fun and a unique feeling when you ride it. There are so many options and brands out there and the ratings vary so drastically from 1 star to 5 its hard to know what to buy. ... show more

One Year Review
I purchased this scooter one year ago and have several pros and cons. For info, my commute round trip is 3.75 miles. It involves going both up and down hills in each direction. Steepest hill roughly a 6% grade, which I encounter on my way home. I weigh about 165 lbs. Pros: Light weight: At 26lbs, I have been bringing the scooter on trains and buses for my commute for the past year. I have never had a problem moving it through crowds or walking through the stations. Its length can make it a bit tough walking down narrow, thin staircases. Otherwise, I haven't had any issues. Easy of use: I had never before ridden a scooter. It only took a couple minutes to learn to balance and only a couple of hours of practice to feel completely at ease riding. All Weather: I have ridden this scooter on my commute in 3+ inches of wet snow, in pouring rain, sub 0 temperatures, as well as temperatures over 100, and in headwinds of 30+ mph. The scooter handles all of them without a problem. Cons: Weather Extremes: In high head winds and extreme cold, the battery drains extreme quickly, and I needed to bring the charger to complete my commute home. The scooter also can not power through high winds. Finally, in the snow and rain there is an opening on the running board and it will fill with water and needs to be drained. Durability: I have had to replace my back tire and the front tire needs to replaced. The back wheel impossible to replace with a solid tire, and I bought a installed tire instead. The tiller clip also failed after roughly a year of daily use. The only replacement currently on the market is made by a 3rd party and is flimsily, and is barely able to clip the scooter closed. Lights: Needs more lights for safe night time riding. Fortunately, these are cheap and easy to attach, but would be nice to have included. Motor: Reaches max speeds without a problem on flat ground and slight hills. On my 6% grade it drops to ~10.5 mph. Has difficulty fighting the wind. Could use a bigger motor. Spare Parts: GoTrax has been sold out of spare parts for months. There are some alternatives on the market, but as far as I can tell the batteries and motor are propriety, and you can not get them anywhere else. Overall: I would recommend this scooter if you commute is similar to mine. The overall benefits, lower weight, and starting cost out weigh the drawbacks. This scooter is not perfect however. If I was to purchase a new one today, I would buy one with solid wheels, a bigger motor, and a bigger battery, as these would overcome all the drawbacks I had. ... show more

We recently purchased the Gotrax GXL V2 Electric Scooter for our kids, and I couldn’t be happier with the decision. Already using it back and forth from office and home, about 2 miles each way on mostly flat surface, such as sidewalk and pedestrian crossing on intersections, etc. You notice the instant acceleration, and it takes a normal person like me 10 minutes to get used to balancing, deceleration and acceleration. I wear a helmet and everyone using these scooters should as well. I really love it. For the daily commute cost of taking buses, I save $5.80 per day. So, my Gotrax scooter will be paid off in about 2 months time by not having to take buses to work. I'm loving it. So easy to carry around, got on train easily and fold into a very compact size. Put in the back of a trunk of car, its a breeze too since it is only 26 lbs! At 26 lbs, it is lighter than a lot of bicycles and electric scooters alike! Charging is super easy. I charge it when I sleep. Wake up in the morning, it is ready to go. However, I think it only needs about 3-4 hours to fully charge its battery. It is so good and reliable under both hot 95 F and cold 48 F that I bought a second one for my wife too since she is also surprised by the torque and power and dependability of the battery. The only thing we like Gotrax to improve upon may be some lights on its bottom to increase both fun factor and safety at night. However, I understand that it may increase the costs by adding more lights. Last but not least, there is a coupon of $50 from Amazon. You just have to check back often (i.e. daily) to see if the coupon would appear under Gotrax v2 scooter page. Once it appears, you have about a 12 hours window to apply such coupon. So, I just paid for my second Gotrax scooter v2 $249, instead of $299. I bought my first Gotrax scooter v2 at full price $299 since I didn't know. At least my second one is $50 cheaper! Update: 6-30-2019 After weeks of usage, I and my wife both still love our Gotrax scooters! Oh, when we assembled our first scooter, we did not know that we had to unscrew the two screws on the red hook on the steering wheel column first. Then, remove the black cover with two screw tracked holds, then plug the steering bar in and connect the 5 pins. Had we known that trick, we would have saved about 5 minutes. Well, I was smart enough to figure out that ... hummm.. may have to loosen the screws first. Bingo !!! Also, just uploaded our video that went first powering off the scooter, we found that there was the number "2". hummmm, what is that, then we pressed again, there was another number, "1". Then, I and my wife figured those two number out too. On "1" mode, the scooter felt slower and the odometer read only up to about 8.6 mph, our second one was actually 9.5mph. Then, on "2" mode, the scooters both went up to 15.2-3 mph on flat surface. We just tried on a long stretch of a slight downhill today, we managed to get 16.7 mph !!!!!!!!! It was GREAT FUN ... !!!!!
